Mugwinji, unlike you PM Churchill would have told Tsvangirai to go. By Nomusa Garikai

“A new Zimbabwe is possible in President Robert Mugabe’s lifetime,” concluded Whitlaw Mugwinji in his latest article “Bond Notes Demo Flop: The old is Dying, Can the New Be Born?” No doubt that he thought he had written a well thought out article designed to egg the nation on and well come at long last the new prosperous, free and just Zimbabwe we all been awaiting for.

Sadly, if the nation followed Mugwinji’s advice; the new Zimbabwe we have been waiting for will NOT be born in President Mugabe’s grandson’s lifetime even if he too was to live to the same ripe old age of 92 years still counting! Mugwinji’s advice was premised on the need for the country’s opposition to unit, the same old drum with the same old monotonous monotone pangu pangu beat! There is strength in numbers and unity and he related the following to clinch the argument.

“Former UK PM Winston Churchill’ remarks to his private secretary just a few hours before the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union are quite instructive to this politics of coalition building,” wrote Mugwnji.

“The secretary inquired how Churchill, an anti-communist, could reconcile himself to being on the same side as the Soviets.

“Churchill’s reply was clear and unequivocal: “I have only one purpose, the destruction of (German Chancellor Adolf) Hitler and my life is simplified, thereby. If Hitler invaded hell, I would make at least a favourable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons.”

“This is the attitude pro-democratic forces need to embrace. The might not agree with one another on many issues, but they must build alliances and work together for they share a common enemy.”

Of course Sir Winston Churchill was right to work with the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin because it helped to defeat the Nazis and end the war. But to argue that any quality opposition leaders in Zimbabwe (of whom I readily admit there are very few out there but I attribute that to the present political system that favour the scum of society and not the cream to rise to the top) should form a coalition with the likes of Morgan Tsvangirai, Joice Mujuru, Tendai Biti, etc. is to completely miss the point.

Tsvangirai, Mujuru, etc. have already proven beyond all reasonable doubt that they are breathtakingly corrupt and incompetent in carrying out the very tasks we need carried out to deliver the new Zimbabwe – i.e. implementing the democratic reforms necessary for free, fair and credible. Tsvangirai had five years during the GNU to implement the reforms and failed to get even one reform implemented. Not one.

How is Tsvangirai going to implement the reforms now when he failed to do so during the GNU when SADC spelt out the roadmap for him and yet he failed to get even one reform implemented?

As for Mai Mujuru, she says she saw nothing wrong that happened during her 34 years at the heart of the Zanu PF government because her sexy “puppy eyes” had not opened. We are to now believe that her eyes have finally opened. After 34 years! She saw nothing in 34 years because she is mentally blind, period!

How is Mai Mujuru going to implement democratic reforms or catch the looting brigade when she is mentally blind? Come on!

The trouble with people like Whitlaw Mugwinji, Vince Musewe, Moses Chamboko and a good many others is that they are obsessed about quantity and do not care about quality. They have conscientious swept all the evidence of Tsvangirai’s breath-taking incompetence and Mai Mujuru’s blindness under the carpet so they can have this united opposition in the 2018 elections. They are cock sure the coalition will win even if not even one reform has been implemented.

Let us say, for the sake of taking this case to its logical conclusion, that there was a united opposition coalition e various opposition (such as it is led by the incompetent and blind). Let us say that the coalition gunned 73% (same as Tsvangirai in the March 2008 elections); ZEC will cook the result and declare Zanu PF the victor!

No doubt the coalition and their ideological backers like Mugwinji will cry out that the elections was rigged. By noon of election day, 31 st July 2013, Tsvangirai was already crying foul!

“Of course the election was rigged, you idiot,” people told Tsvangirai then. “You knew all along that Zanu PF rigs elections and SADC leaders warned you against taking part in elections without implementing the reforms first!”

It would totally irresponsible to allow the nation to be dragged into yet another election with no reform only for the satisfaction of saying “I told you!” Zimbabwe desperately need free, fair and credible elections and the nation must demand the implementation of all the democratic reforms and not listen to the nonsense of such failed leaders as Morgan Tsvangirai who will promise the elections will be free and fair only to flip-flop when it is too late.

Whitlaw Mugwinji you are no student of history much less logic and common sense because if you were then you would have compared the corrupt and incompetent Tsvangirai to PM Neville Chamberlain. The latter’s appeasement of Hitler culminating in his infamous "Peace for our time" speech 30 September 1938 is comparable to Tsvangirai grandstanding and posturing boasting about he had tea with President Mugabe and that the tyrant is now a changed man, a democratic.

Tsvangirai has the audacity asking the nation to accept the weak and feeble new constitution, insisting that it would deliver free and fair elections. He claimed it was an “MDC child!” The Zanu PF MP on the committee tasked to draft the new constitution boasted that President Mugabe “dictated” the constitution. The elections were rigged and thus confirming Tsvangirai was just an empty drum making a lot of noise.

Adolf Hitler invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, just a year after the de trop “Peace for our time” and thus proving how PM Chamberlain had completely and hopelessly misjudged the Nazis leader. Churchill was one of the leaders who did not hesitate and asked Chamberlain to resign. No doubt there were some feeble minded individuals who, like Mugwinji, would have wanted the evidence of PM Chamberlain’s blundering incompetence swept under the carpet and asked everyone to unite behind the PM.

It has taken most Zimbabweans 20 years to finally admit President Mugabe is a corrupt and murderous tyrant. The tyrant has remained in office the last 16 years because the nation has made the mistake of electing a corrupt and incompetent Tsvangirai to remove the tyrant. Having intellectuals like Mugwinji falsifying the facts is delaying the learning process, it could well take another 20 years for nation to finally accept Tsvangirai is incompetent. At this rate the new Zimbabwe will remain a pipedream!

  1. The ruthless crushing of the latest anti-government demonstration in Harare, combined with news that the army is recruiting thousands more soldiers, suggest that Zanu-PF's strategy for stealing elections has not changed.

The scenario is confirmed by the announcement that the diaspora will only be allowed to vote in 2018 if they return home to register and stay on or return again for the ballot – despite the lauded 2013 constitution giving every Zimbabwean the right to vote.

In the face of all this evidence that Zanu PF is overhauling its vote rigging juggernaut then why are some people still saying we should go into the next elections with no meaningful reforms implemented? It really beggars belief!

  2. A new Zimbabwe is possible only if we, the people can prove to ourselves that we can think for ourselves. So far we have shown that we are really incapable of even one coherent idea even over a matter that the nation has been chewing over these last 36 years - how to govern ourselves!

"The ruthless crushing of the latest anti-government demonstration in Harare, combined with news that the army is recruiting thousands more soldiers, suggest that Zanu-PF's strategy for stealing elections has not changed," read one article in today's Bulawayo 24.

In the face of all this evidence that Zanu PF is overhauling and priming its vote rigging juggernaut ready for the next elections then why are some people still insisting in taking part in the elections with not even one meaningful reforms implemented? It really beggars belief!

Elections should be about the people deciding who will govern the country is a free, fair and credible elections and not about trying to win the elections regardless of Zanu PF's vote rigging shenanigans! Dismantling the Zanu vote rigging machinery should be a top priority for every Zimbabwean regardless of their political allegiance.

Who have thought that understanding what the country needs for free and fair elections is still a complex matter it might just as well be rocket science for the majority of our people out there - even the country's so called intellectuals like our friend Whitlaw here! With people like him advising povo, this country has no chance of ever getting out of this hell-hole! None!

  3. @ Whitlaw

Zimbabwe has a string of intellectuals whose performance has left one speechless!

Whitlaw has clearly made up his mind that uniting the opposition is the panacea to all Zimbabwe's political problems all attempts to make him reconsider given that the opposition parties are stuffed to the rafters with corrupt and incompetent individuals. And even if there was quality in the opposition and one could unite them, as long as Zanu PF is allowed to have total control of the whole electoral process and can rig the vote the united opposition will still lose even with 73% of the vote.

Intellectuals are supposed to be amenable to reason and logic - no such lucky with the likes of our friend Whitlaw. The tragedy for Zimbabwe is that he is not alone there are hundreds of thousands of these intellectuals with seven university degrees, some of them, and yet as thick as a brick!

We need to review our whole education system, there is something wrong with a system chaining out 50 000 University and College Graduates every year, all with the book knowledge but no common sense. What good are all these intellectuals with diplomas and degrees galore but all but thick as a brick and totally useless!

Yes "Morgan ane vanhu"? He did get 73% of the vote in the March 2008 elections by Mugabe's own admission. It was because of Tsvangirai's own breath-taking stupidity that Mugabe was allowed to recount the vote and come up with 47%.

People like Archbishop Desmond Tutu warned Tsvangirai that Mugabe was cooking the vote when ZEC failed to announce the results three days after all the voting was complete. Tsvangirai, in his infantile wisdom refused to listen to the warning and demand that the results be announced immediately; arguing that the people of Zimbabwe will wait for ZEC to announce the result in its own good time.

ZEC finally announce the results after 6 weeks! By then Mugabe was confidence he could announce whatever result he wanted and Tsvangirai will accept it - he was right!

What is shocking is that most of the 73% of the people who risked life and limp to vote for Tsvangirai that year have known that Mugabe cook the 73% to turn it into 47%. Yet they have never question Mugabe or Tsvangirai about it. They still believe Tsvangirai is the best thing that ever happened to them. Yes, Tsvangirai has many followers but they are no better than wildebeest who will follow any creature put before them as long as it smells, looks and grants as it blunders along.

Morgan Tsvangirai is corrupt and incompetent; it will take many MDC supporters 20 years or more for that simple reality to sink in. Any electorate that is as stupid as wildebeest is a curse not a blessing to a nation! I do not expect a simpleton such as you to understand that, of course; after all you are a respectable member of a very large and proud herd! In the Seregeti plains wildebeest number in their millions; just like an MDC-T rally, a sea of red all granting “Chinja!” (Change!)

Not even Tsvangirai himself can tell you what democratic changes he is talking about. He is the lead of the movement for democratic change but has no clue what changes the party is supposed to bring. If he knew then he forgot during the GNU because he failed to get even one reform implemented in five years of the GNU. He is luck the wildebeest herd is still solidly behind him blundering along no questions asked! Granting the usual “Chinja!” “Save!”

    God bless the MDC herd!

  5. History is about what happened so how anyone can say what happened did not happen is a surprise. Of course Stalin helped the West win the WW2. Tsvangirai has not helped us in any way end this Mugabe dictatorship, indeed by all his blundering from pillar to post he has helped the tyrant stay in power.

Unless we implement the reforms the next elections are there for Zanu PF to lose and with Tsvangirai or Mujuru as their main challenge then Zanu PF will kick itself to lose the elections, he is that corrupt and incompetent.

I agree Tsvangirai is more like PM Chamberlain but even he would be turning in his grave to be compared with someone like Tsvangirai. I fail to see why people like Mugwinji are simply refusing to see Tsvangirai for the corrupt and incompetent individual he is!

History is an unforgiving master, when you get a get-out-of-jail card you use it or you are in trouble. We got many get-out-of-jail cards with the thre good ones in 2008 when President Mugabe clearly lost the March 2008 elections, Tsvangirai should have had the presence of mind and claimed the price. He did no such thing.

The second chance was President Mugabe was forced to use wanton violence to win the presidential run-off. Both SADC and the AU refused to accept President Mugabe as the winner. What Tsvangirai should have done is stand his ground and demand a refresh rerun. He did not! The best chance by far was during the GNU when all Tsvangirai had to do was to implement the democratic reforms. He failed to get not even one reform implemented. How stupid was that!

After all that mind-boggling blundering by Tsvangirai someone still thinks he is a great leader! Do we really hate ourselves that much that we will all manner of ill upon ourselves!

Yes, Tsvangirai should have resigned but, if his followers were not in this slumber then they should have realised by now that the man is useless and deserted him in droves. The fact that he still has some followers is proof we still have some people who are still fast asleep.

There is no healthy and functional democracy anywhere in the world that has a fast asleep electorate. We need an informed and diligent electorate to elect good quality leaders and once in in power to hold them to account and keep them away from the temptations of greed and autocracy on the narrow and straight path.

    1. What good has it done Tsvangirai having millions of supporters if Zanu PF can deny them the vote, discount the vote, etc. Vote rigging is a serious problem in Zimbabwe, it is naive to keep sweeping this under the carpet!

  7. Through a government gazette, President Robert Mugabe said he wanted to take over the land at Kadoma held by Zimplats for the benefit of the public. The decision is likely to put the nation on a collision course with foreign investors.
The government intends acquiring the 28000ha which will then be parcelled out “for the immediate entry of new players into the platinum sector”.
“Notice is hereby given, in terms of section 398 (1) of the Mines and Minerals Act (Chapter 21:05), that the president intends to acquire compulsorily part of the mining location held by Zimbabwe Platinum Mines under special mining lease number 1 of 1994 as it fully appears below, for the utilisation of such mining location for the benefit of the public,” the gazette reads.
Kadoma, that is Russell’s, Grace Mugabe’s son by her first husband, stamping ground. He did not do so well with the Gold mines he was given; could it be his mother was him to try his hand with platinum! President Mugabe has been looking after Bona’s husband and his brother bringing up their property and wealth portfolios, now he wants to do something for Russell.
In Zimbabwe the term “for the benefit of the public” is used very loosely to mean the ruling elite and their families and friends. Povo is supposed to benefit from see the ruling elite rich, i.e. benefit indirectly. Their turn will come “tomorrow”! They have waited for 36 years for tomorrow but that does not mean it is not coming!
