War vets "are masters of succession" boasted Mutsvangwa - then do we have a tyrant. By W Mukori

Comrade Chris Mutsvangwa you say it was you and your liberation war friends who selected Robert Mugabe.
“Because we were the founding army, when the struggle needed new leadership, we sat and made sure that president Mugabe becomes the new commander of the army,” he said.
“we are the ones who sold the name of President Mugabe to the masses. That is why he stands head and shoulders above all the other nationalist leaders.”
“We are masters of the succession plan. We know it so well so we have no lesson to learn from Jonathan who deserted the war.”
Mutsvangwa and his war veterans are becoming obsessed about Professor Jonathan Moyo and his G40 faction’s machinations. Please forget him and G40 for one minute; after all it is not only the Mnangagwa faction and the G40 faction who have any invested interest on who governs Zimbabwe. Every Zimbabweans has any interest and the numbers of the warring Zanu PF members is nothing compared to those outside the party.
If Mutsvangwa does not need lessons on succession from Professor Moyo he certainly needs lessons from the rest of the Zimbabwe people!
Looking at the sorry economic state Zimbabwe, the human misery it has brought and the over 30 000 innocent lives cut short for selfish political gain by Mugabe in his 36 years of corrupt and tyrannical rule surely even you Comrade Mutsvangwa will admit that electing Mugabe and keeping him in power all these years was not such a good idea after all. You have admitted yourself that the tyrant has “dictatorial tendencies”. You want him to go.
So the man you still describe as standing “head and shoulders above all the other nationalist leaders” turned out to be a corrupt and murderous tyrant with a knack for betraying his revolutionary comrades and povo alike!
If the truth be told, and it must be told and to your face too, you are NOT masters of the success plan are you. If you elected a corrupt and murderous tyrant last time what makes you so sure you will not do so again?
Indeed, you have already shown that you are not as clever as you claim to be at picking who will make a good leader and who will not by selecting Emmerson Mnangagwa to succeed Mugabe. Mnangagwa is the flip-side of the tyrant; he, of all people, has been Mugabe’s right-hand man, he played a major role in the Gukurahundi massacre and all the vote rigging machinations.
How you and your war veterans elected Mugabe to lead Zanu PF before independence is your affair why you have imposed the tyrant on the people these last 36 years is totally unacceptable. You have denied the people their freedoms and basic human rights to stop regime change.
The most important lesson you and your brand of war veterans have clearly failed to learn during the war and since is the revolution was not just about ending white colonial oppression but to secure freedom, human rights, justice and economic prosperity for all Zimbabweans. What you have done is replace white colonial oppression with black oppression.
You claim to be the “master of succession plan”; does the ordinary Zimbabwean has any meaningful say in that plan; a free vote in a free, fair and credible election?
Listen Mutsvangwa and hear this; whom you impose as the next leader of Zanu PF is your affair but if you think you are going to impose the individual on the people of Zimbabwe think again. For the last 36 years Mugabe and Zanu PF thugs have ridden roughshod over the people’s hopes and dreams denying them their freedoms and basic human rights including the right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country and even the right to life. This must stop here and now!
Zimbabweans are going to join the commune of free nations the world over when the country holds its first ever free, fair and credible elections! It is the fervent hope of every peace-loving Zimbabwean out there that you, Comrade Mutsvangwa and your war veterans will play a constructive role in making this happen. If not that, then that you will never again play the role of the tyrant’s thug doing his master’s bidding!

The next elections will be free, fair and credible; the decades of rogue war veterans frog marching villagers to Zanu PF rallies are over!

  1. Before independent we assumed that all those fighting to end white colonial oppression and exploitation had one end objective to see all Zimbabweans living in freedom, peace and getting a fair share of the nation’s wealth. It did not take long after independence that there were many who had other more sinister plans for independent Zimbabwe; they intended to seize power from the white but only to install themselves as the new slave-masters.

It has taken at least 20 years for most Zimbabweans to acknowledge that President Mugabe is a corrupt and murderous tyrant; the economy started to falter soon after independence proof of his incompetence and the Gukurahundi massacres happened in the mid 19880s; the people had all the evidence to prove he was mercenary and not the liberation war hero. They did not want to believe the evidence because they did not want to believe that a black person can exploit and oppress his/her fellow black brothers and sisters.

Mutsvangwa and his band of war veterans are mercenaries same as President Mugabe and the rest of the Zanu PF ruling elite, to them the liberation war was about removing the white and taking their place as the new gods ruling from Mount Olympia! The war veterans’ quarrel with President Mugabe is that they have been kicked off Mount Olympia, they are no more than nymph tasked to guard Mount Olympia from the restive mortals.

“We respect President Mugabe as a revolutionary, but in revolutionary parlance there are no superior and inferior individuals. We are all equal and we all earned our place at the top table through individual contributions,” said Mutsvangwa.

Like all tyrants Mugabe, Mutsvangwa and the rogue war veterans claim they have the right to rule, “place at the top table”, and so they justify their claim on the grounds they liberated the country, their “individual contributions”. Of course it is nonsensical to claim they liberated the people if at the end of the day the people are still denied the same freedoms and rights as before. All the nation got is the removal of one oppressor but only to have him replaced with another.

By being slow in recognising that President Mugabe and his Zanu PF thugs were nothing but the new oppressors because people did not want to accept the reality of a black person oppressing a fellow black; the people lost the opportunity to nip the Mugabe dictatorship in the bud. Now, after 36 years, it is a lot tougher to uproot the dictatorship.

Mutsvangwa and his fellow war veterans are unhappy with their role as nymphs, and there are demanding that they too should be gods. The war veterans will fight to keep the hordes of mortals from invading Mount Olympia even if they wish to be gods is not met just to protect their nymph status even when they is nothing to show for it.

The truth is there are blacks who are oppressing fellow blacks just as there were whites oppressing blacks, whites oppressing their fellow whites, etc. Fighting in the war of liberation has not made Mugabe, Mutsvangwa, etc. infallible; they are as fallible as the rest of us and therefore they claim that they and they alone must rule a nonsense, a tyrant’s gage, which must be dismissed with the contempt it rightly deserve.

Mutsvangwa cannot have his cake and eat it too. If he liberated the people of Zimbabwe as he says then he cannot deny the people have to free, fair and credible elections; as a birth right, not a privilege to be given to some and denied others, of all liberated people the world over. By claiming for himself and his fellow war veterans to be the “stockholders of Zimbabwe” with a veto and relegating the rest of the populous to “stakeholder who come and go” whose vote on leadership can be overridden by the veto; war veterans are effectively denying the people a meaningful vote. People with no meaningful say in the governance of the country are per se not free but oppressed.

    1. 36 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption has resulted in a very significant drop in the wealth available for all the gods in Mount Olympus. In 2014 there was load shedding with nearly 150 gods led by Mai Mujuru being thrown off the mountain. It turns out that was not enough, phase two of the load shedding is coming.

The likes of Mutsvangwa was thrown off the mountain and is now fight a life and death battle to make sure Mnangagwa wins the factional war. His hope is Mnangagwa will take him back otherwise he will find himself in the deepest and hottest part of hell!

All this talk of free and fair elections has Mutsvangwa and his war veteran thug friends at sixes and sevens; if there are free and fair elections no one will need thugs like them any more. What are they going to do with themselves?

After all these years of siding with Mugabe and his corrupt and tyrannical regime, the war veterans were paid peanuts for all their hard and dirty work and now they discover the nation is turning up its nose at them for their role in propping up the dictatorship.

Jabulani Sibanda the last war veteran before Mutsvangwa is hoping to escape the grilling for his "bedroom coup" jibe against Mugabe by using freedom of expression clause. After all the innocent souls Sibanda has tormented on Mugabe's behave he never dreamt the tyrant would repay him by kicking him in the teeth!

Zanu PF is imploding and the war veterans' world is going down with the party.

  2. @Nomazulu

I would like to believe that most of the Americans who voted for Hillary Clinton did so because she is a decent and competent person first and last; being a woman should not come into. By the same token, I believe most Americans who voted for Barack Obama in the various elections did so because he too is a decent and competent person first and last; being a man, him being black, etc. did not matter. President Obama has turned out to be one of the best presidents American has ever had. It would have been a great pity if American denied themselves of his leadership just because he is black!

Zimbabwe is a country in serious trouble and to get out, we will need to find a competent and focused leader.

Mai Mujuru has shown herself to be one of the many corrupt and incompetent and utterly useless leaders in Zimbabwe. I can understand those who want her as president and do not know she is corrupt and incompetent; they must go through her record. There are those who disregard the record and still want her as president just because she is a woman. I have to dismiss these with contempt. Why should we punish the whole nation by having a corrupt and incompetent leader just so we can say we have had our first woman president!

Nomazulu, I have read many of your articles, you are a decent person of sound judgement; you stand for election to office as MP or president and you will HAVE my vote. You are the breath of fresh air Zimbabwe politics needs desperately!

  3. Mai Mujuru has her own group of war veterans and, like Mugabe's group, they too believe they know best. They blame President Mugabe and the rest of the Zanu PF leaders for the country's mess they have all conveniently forgotten that they were an integral part of the dictatorship for 34 years especially their Zim PF leaders Mujuru, Mutasa, Gumbo, etc.

Mai Mujuru in corrupt and incompetent and these war veterans want to recycle her back into leadership position! How stupid is that!

After 36 years one would have thought that they have finally learned that freedom fighters do not have all the answers and hence the need for the nation to completely overhaul the failed autocratic system Zanu PF fostered on the nation. The people of Zimbabwe will have to put their foot down and demand democratic change otherwise we will be going round and round in circles.
