Mujuru supporters being threaten reports NGO - need proactive NGOs to end violence. By Wilbert Mukori

"On 18 December 2015, at the inauguration of the substantive Headman Zvakaramba at Matsvitsi Village Ward 3 in Zvimba South, the guest of honour, Chief Zvimba Chikambi was asked to give a vote of thanks. Chief Zvimba began to attack smaller parties like the People First. He said he was aware of its activities in the area and the ruling party was not going to fold its arms and watch," reported Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP).
What goes round comes round; Mai Mujuru, Didymus Mutasa, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, Jabulani Sibanda and the other People First Movement bigwigs are used to hearing or even directing the violence with them holding the thick end of the whip. Now they and their supporters are on the business end of the whip and they do not like it one bit. One does not need to ask Mai Mujuru whether she likes, of course she hates it!
They never raised a finger to stop the violence when they were in positions of power and authority to make a difference now all they can do is curse quietly. What goes round comes round.
The ZPP report showed that whilst the greatest number of perpetrates are Zanu PF operative on opposition members; there are nonetheless some Zanu PF to Zanu PF, opposition on opposition and the odd opposition on Zanu PF.
The Police have continued to turn a blind eye to Zanu PF politically motivated violence and each time they are involved they have descended on the opposition like a tonne of bricks from a great height whilst Zanu PF operative get a single finger slap on the wrist, at worst.
As the nation goes into election mode the political violence will swing into overdrive; in 2008 millions of people were harassed, beaten and /or raped. Over 500 were murdered in three months of the presidential run-off. The next elections have all the hallmarks that a fiercely fought contest given the ever worsening economic meltdown so Zanu PF popularity will once again be rock bottom and so the party will be forced to resort to its most tried, tested and never-failed method of securing victory – brutal violence.
It is clear that Zimbabwe's culture of politically motivate violence is now deeply ingrain in our national ethos and anyone who thinks it will go away, without the nation doing something to end it, is naïve. To end the scourge of political violence we need to implement the raft of democratic reforms agreed in the 2008 GPA which include reform of the Police and Judiciary to free these institutions from the clutches of Zanu PF to carry out their public duties without fear or favour.
ZPP and all the other civic organizations are doing a great job monitoring politically motivated violence but they must take a more proactive role and demand the implementation of the 2008 GPA democratic reforms designed end this perverse culture. The reforms must be implemented before the next elections; any elections held before the reforms will be marred by fear and violence and therefore can never be a true reflection of the free democratic will of the people.

  1. It is within our power to ensure the next elections are free, fair and credible in every sense of that phrase i.e. no one is harassed or beaten, we have a free media, the candidate and public are all free to interact, the voting and counting process are all open and transparent, etc.

Now that Zanu PF is freed from the GPA the regime will do all in its power to resist have any of the GPA reforms implemented but that should only harden our resolve to ensure the reforms are implemented. After 36 years of allowing Zanu PF to deny the people's freedoms and democratic rights it is high time we planted our collective foot firmly on the ground and refuse to budge an inch; we demand the full implementation of all the reforms before the next elections! But for the regime to accept the reforms we will need all hands on the wheel including all the opposition parties and NGOs.

    1. The worsening economic situation will never recover without restoring confidence in Zimbabwe's ability to have a stable and accountable government, rigging another elections will send out the word that the country is unstable and still under the spell of a tyrant!

  2. @ M Ncube

Those who have wanted the truth of the corruption, incompetence, tyranny and murders that Mai Mujuru and her People First friends have committed are either naive and gullible idiots or are themselves the perpetrates of the evil Zanu PF has done. It would be irresponsible of those who can see what is going on here to allow the people of Zimbabwe to be short changed by these people. These myopic fools and their greedy handlers are very vocal bullies still they must not be allowed to drown the truth and drag the nation even deeper into the hell Mugabe and Zanu PF have landed us.

Trust me, your article will open the eyes of many people so they see Mai Mujuru and company for who they really are - incompetent, corrupt and ruthless tyrants who were kicked out of Zanu PF and are now keen to BUILD their own dictatorship along the same lines as Zanu PF!

To get out of this hell-on-earth we need to build a democratic Zimbabwe where all will enjoy their freedoms and human rights including the right to free, fair and credible elections. To do this we need to implement all the democratic reforms agreed in the 2008 GPA which are designed to dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship. Mai Mujuru and her PF are not interested in implementing the GPA reforms but paying lip-service to reforms.

“We shall repeal POSA and replace it with a modern legislation that is in line with the Con-stitution,” PF’s BUILD manifesto promises, for example.

POSA is a hybrid of Ian Smith’s repressive media laws which Zanu PF then fine-tuned to suit their own selfish needs. Before independence President Mugabe and his Zanu PF cronies all swore that they wanted a free media and freedom of expression enjoyed by all. We are ex-pected to believe that PF will repeal POSA and create a free media, free to look into Mai Mu-juru’s diamond trading past and hold her to account?

PF know about the democratic reforms in the GPA and that not one reform was implemented during the GNU. They could and should have committed themselves to the implementation of these reforms if they are the democrats who have had their Damascene moment when they were booted out of Zanu PF. They have careful avoided even mention the GPA reforms in the hope they can get away with the vague promise to modernize.

PF leaders have proven beyond doubt that they are incompetent, corrupt and, in many cases, murderous tyrants just as MDC leaders have too proven to be incompetent and corrupt; we should stop recycling the same failed leaders and hope for a different result.

We must implement the GPA reforms which will open up our political system to allow com-petent men and women to go into politics. Our present political system drives quality people out of politics because it is a domain of thugs and gangsters.

  3. Tomana is not an angel but a devil's imp by his own right. When a hyena turns on another hyena it is not for the goat to feel sorry for the mauled hyena. Tomana has played his part in creating the Zanu PF dictatorship and it is just that he should have the chance to taste some of he has dished out to the rest of us!

  4. Yes but we must also remember that it was with the help of MDC leaders like Ncube that President Mugabe managed to stay in power! It is sickening that MDC should be critical of President Mugabe now when they are no more than a fly to an elephant and yet when the bull elephant was down and out and they had the injection with the democratic reforms they failed to administer the dose! The MDC idiots had five years to implement the reforms and failed to get even one reform implemented!

I have no time or patience for MDC's media antics! Zimbabweans would be better off with Ncube, Tsvangirai, Biti and the rest of the MDC village idiots off the political stage! They are an annoying distraction, at best.
