ANC in "delicate" talks with errant Zanu PF. Just remember, they're the problem and, per se, can never be the solution too. W Mukori

South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), is engaged in "delicate" talks with Zanu-PF in Zimbabwe following disputed elections, secretary general Fikile Mbalula has said,” reported Bulawayo 24.

“Publicly, the ANC has endorsed President Emmerson Mnangagwa's disputed victory while dismissing his Citizens Coalition for Change rival Nelson Chamisa as a "puppet" of western countries.

“Now it appears the ANC has been employing a strategy to soften Zanu-PF and buy leverage in closed-door discussions.

“Mbalula revealed the discussions in a leaked letter to the OR Tambo School of Leadership which had planned to host, this Thursday, Zimbabwe academic Ibbo Mandaza for a lecture under the title: ‘The State of Democracy in the SADC Region: A Reflection on the National Elections of Zimbabwe.'

“Mbalula has asked that the lecture be paused.”

"At the moment the leadership of the ANC is engaged in a number of delicate engagements regarding the situation in Zimbabwe. In this context, a public lecture, at this time, on what is clearly an ANC platform, would complicate these initiatives," Mbalula wrote to OR Tambo School of Leadership principal, David Masondo.

If you ask me, I would say the penny has finally dropped in the empty heads of ANC leaders themselves. When President Cyril Ramaphosa and his ANC friends announced at their party congress last November that NC will not allow regime change in Zimbabwe they expected both SADC and AU election observer teams to turn a blind eye to the blatant Zanu PF vote rigging as usual.

And so ANC leaders were surprised when SADC Election Observer Mission (SEOM) came up with the damning report. Of course, everyone knew that Zanu PF was rigging these elections, the process is flawed and illegal. The AU observers confirmed the same things. Once the vote rigging gene was out of the bottle there was no putting it back.

ANC must negotiating to reassure Mnangagwa that he and his Zanu PF cronies will retain as much power and control as the 2008 to 2013 GNU.

What ANC leaders must know is that the new GNU MUST implement all the democratic reforms which should have been implemented in the 2008 to 2013 GNU. A tall order if Zanu PF and CCC leaders are in the new GNU. The two parties were in the 2008 GNU and failed to implement even one token reform in five year. Why should any one trust them to implement the reforms this time?

Zimbabwe is stuck in this economic and political mess precisely because of the treacherous betrayal by both Zanu PF and MDC/CCC leaders these last 43 and 23 years respectively. Both Zanu PF and CCC are the problem and, per se, they cannot be the solution too!

Zimbabwe wasted the golden opportunity to implement the democratic reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU; the country has been very lucky to get another chance. There are many Zimbabweans who know what the required reforms are and what must be done to implement them and get the nation back on a healthy and functioning democratic footing.

Zimbabwe cannot afford to waste this second and, possibly last chance for this generation at least, to end this obnoxious dictatorship. And all for what: to appease the corrupt and murderous tyrants and sell outs who landed us in the mess in the first place!

Mr ANC Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, Zanu PF and CCC cannot and must not be in the new GNU; that is not negotiable!

  1. Mnangagwa defied all calls dismissing 2023 elections as null and void to present the world with fait accompli sworn government. He must not be allowed to get away with it!

  2. @ Professor J Moyo

NB: Finally, the cat is out of the bag. Below is the CCC 'legal case' against Zimbabwe's sovereignty, which calls for foreigners to organise and conduct fresh elections in Zimbabwe.

The entire case is based on and aligned with the report of the Sadc Election Observation Mission [SEOM], leaving little if any doubt that there was pre-election collusion between CCC contacts and President Hakainde Hichilema's contacts, including Dr Nevers Mumba, SEOM's chairperson, who has publicly disclosed that President Hichilema told him to "go to Zimbabwe on behalf of Sadc to give the people of Zimbabwe a free, fair and credible election".

SEOM's responsibility is to observe elections and report on what it observed; but not to give any Sadc country free, fair and credible, which is a sovereign responsibility of member states.

The problem with Professor Jonathan Moyo is that he is paranoid and pedantic a deadly mental cocktail specially for a spin doctor given to believing his own propaganda.

Professor Moyo is making a mountain out of a mole hill of the fact that President Hichilema told Dr Mumba "go to Zimbabwe on behalf of Sadc to give the people of Zimbabwe a free, fair and credible election”.

If Zimbabwe’s elections had not been so flawed and illegal that ZEC failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters’ roll Dr Mumba would still have condemned the Zimbabwe elections as a farce even if President Hichilema had said nothing!

What Professor Moyo cannot swallow is that ever since the watershed 2008 elections it was clear to SADC and everyone that Zimbabwe would never hold free, fair and credible elections without implementing the democratic reforms. The primary purpose of the 2008 to 2013 GNU was to implement the reforms.

When it was clear no meaningful reforms were implemented during the GNU, SADC leaders wanted the 2013 elections postponed to allow the reforms to be implemented first. SADC leaders endorse the 2013 elections as “substantially free and fair” but everyone knew that was a lie. This year SADC observers decided to tell the truth and Professor Moyo wanted them to lie!

  3. Zanu PF rigged the 2023 elections and this is just another example of some one coming up with a hen's teeth tale cover up story. As usual many will believe it just as they still believe the sanctions hen's teeth tale. This is what comes from those whose understand of issues is superficial, they are like branches of a willow tree swearing even in the lightest breeze!

There was really nothing illegal about someone setting up to collect V11 data and double check the official result. ZEC had nothing to hide if everything was above board, after all the V11 forms were posted outside every polling station, in the public domain.

  4. Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen said Ramaphosa’s attendance was a sign that the South African leader is turning a blind eye to the struggles of Zimbabweans.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa’s attendance of Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration as President of Zimbabwe today demonstrates the extent to which the ANC is removed from the plight of the Zimbabwean people under the ZANU-PF’s longstanding autocratic dictatorship, and the ANC’s complete and utter disregard for our own founding principles of freedom and democracy which the ZANU-PF has killed.”

ANC’s no regime change in Zimbabwe stance was ill advised and given the regime’s critics yet another stick with which to bash the regime. The country's economy is in a mess, corruption and lawlessness are rampant. ANC’s 2024 election battle is going to be a tough one.

  5. President Ramaphosa is a revolutionary leader. In public he behaves like a ZANU PF guy but in private, he calls a sin by its rightfully name in both a friend and an enemy. He explained that ED should wait for SADC Final Report. It is a powerful statement…

ANC’s resolution to keep Zanu PF in power under it “no regime change in Zimbabwe” party resolution last year was ill advised. The party tried to follow it through by attending Mnangagwa’s inauguration even after SADC and AU had rejected the 23 August 2023 election process as a farce. Now the party is regretting it!

The final SADC report will confirm what the preliminary report said, it is nonsense to pretend that it would say something else!

ANC has blundered from pillar to post and South Africa and we in Zimbabwe and the rest of SADC have all paid dearly for it. I hopes that South Africans themselves have learned from this and will elect a more competent government next year!

  6. Coltart and other CCC leader were sworn into office.

Nelson Chamisa and his CCC friends participated in these 2023 elections knowing full well that they are flawed, that participating will give Zanu PF legitimacy and still the soldiered on regardless because of greed. Here is the confession in black and white!

“The (2013) electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility,” confessed David Coltart in his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.

Of course CCC were not surprised that SADC and AU condemned the 23 August 2023 elections, they knew ZEC had failed to produced a verified voters’ roll, for example, it would have been hypocritical for them to pretend that was news!

And so the CCC leaders who won the few gravy train seats are defying SADC and AU who said the election were a farce are taking up their seats to give the process credibility out of greed. They are only confirming the political reality that most people have refused to admit - that MDC/CCC leaders have given up the fight for reforms and free and fair elections for a share of the spoils of power from Zanu PF.

Why Chamisa et al missed Mnangagwa's swearing in ceremony only to attend their own is just political posturing nonsense!

  7. @ Chitando

You agree with SADC the elections were rigged and yet CCC members are taking up their seats on the gravy train to give the process credibility. We all know CCC participated in these elections out of greed but now that SADC had condemned the process one would have expected CCC to come to your sense and come out in support of SADC and not ZANU PF!

How typical! These elections were rigged, SADC and AU observers have said the same thing. So why are you blaming the ordinary Zimbabweans for Zanu PF’s rigged election victory.

After all you are the ones who said you had plugged all the vote rigging holes. Now it turns out CCC did not even have election agents at many of the polling station. The EU says Chamisa got US$3 million for the purpose!

  9. So CCC did not attend Mnangagwa's swearing in on 4 September because the elections were rigged. And today 6 September, 2 days later, CCC are being sworn in to take up their seats on the gravy train. They were elected by the same process SADC condemned; that is a glaring example of hypocrisy! In CCC we have sell outs and hypocrites masquerading as democrats!

  10. The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader in Zimbabwe Nelson Chamisa says he won't accept the political persecution of his party members.

He has denounced the torture and abduction of two of the party's task force members in Harare.

The pair's lawyers have also been arrested, however the legal representatives have since been released on bail.

The political environment is tense in Zimbabwe following the recent election where President Emmerson Mnangagwa bagged a second term.

    Chamisa has rejected the results.”

This is all nonsense! Chamisa has rejected election results and refused to attend Mnangagwa’s swearing in ceremony and yet two day later CCC are being sworn into office to take their seats on the gravy train.

Chamisa dragged the nation into these flawed elections, claiming he had plugged all the vote rigging loop holes, out of greed. He has always claimed to do many things but it is all hot air.

Zimbabweans are a very naive and gullible lot; they believe anything and no wonder the country is a failed state.

  11. ANC vowed to stop regime change in Zimbabwe but doing so in defiance of the SADC and AU ruling that Zanu PF rigged the 2023 elections has backed fired on ANC itself!
