"Solve country's socio-economic crisis" argue UN - rubbish, treat disease, bad governance, not the symptom W Mukori

Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by corrupt, incompetent, vote rigging and murderous thugs. The ruling party, Zanu PF, has captured all state institutions so that the Police, Army, Judiciary, etc. are party departments in all but name. Instead of serving the nation and the common good, state institutions serve the Zanu PF mantra of “No regime change, at all cost!”

So, in our fight for the restoration of our freedoms and human rights including the right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country and even the right to life itself; Zimbabweans have looked to outsiders for support. Key international organisations like the UN’s support have been of critical importance; it is therefore very disappointing that the UN has not always been forthright and forceful in its support of the downtrodden majority in Zimbabwe.

“With opposition demonstrations still likely to take place in Zimbabwe in the near future, we urge the Government to find ways to continuously engage with the population about their legitimate grievances on the economic situation, and to stop cracking down on peaceful protestors,” said a UN Geneva statement.

“We are deeply concerned by the socio-economic crisis that continues to unfold in Zimbabwe. While acknowledging efforts made by the Government, the international community and the UN in Zimbabwe to mitigate the effects of the crisis and reform process, the dire economic situation is now impacting negatively on the realization of the economic and social rights of millions of Zimbabweans.”

Thank you but if the truth be told, the socio-economic crisis is but a symptom of the political problem of institutionalized bad governance. Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by corrupt, incompetent, vote rigging and murderous thugs. Ever since the country gained her independence back in 1980 the country has yet to hold free, fair and credible elections. 39 years of criminal waste of the country’s human and material resources have taken a heavy toll and reduced the country’s once robust economy into ruins.

Still, we cannot solve the socio-economic crisis whilst ignoring the bad governance problem that is causing it. It is therefore disheartening that the UN is dwelling on the worsening economic meltdown but failed to condemn the blatant vote rigging by Zanu PF of last year’s elections.

Zanu PF rigged last year’s elections, the regime has no mandate to govern and should step down. As long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state there will be no meaningful economic recovery because no one would want to do business with thugs.

“In January, we expressed concerns about reports of excessive use of force, including live ammunition, by Zimbabwean security forces during protests following the announcement of an increase in petrol prices,” continued the UN statement.

“We are not aware of the indictment or prosecution of a single alleged perpetrator of human rights violations committed during or after of those protests.”

This is all very well, but the situation is Zimbabwe has now reached a critical stage, the country is standing on the edge of the abyss. It is time for everyone to call a spade a bloody shovel; it is time to demand that the illegitimate Zanu PF regime steps down. Zimbabwe’s problem is one of rigged elections and bad governance, we must deal with it and not the symptom of the economic meltdown it has cause.

  1. Zanu PF rigged last year's elections and it was gratifying that the EU, Americans, Commonwealth, Canadians and everybody with any meaningful democratic credentials either than the UN dismissed the elections as a farce. The UN, for whatever reasons, gave a wishy-washy judgement designed to let the Zanu PF off the hook. It is infuriating that even now the UN is continuing with its idiotic calls.

Zimbabwe's socio-economic crisis will not be solved by asking the corrupt and incompetent Zanu PF regime to address the economic challenges. We need tom accept the reality on the ground that the regime is corrupt and incompetent and, most important of all, that the regime has no mandate to govern. Zanu PF has remained in power for 39 years only because the party rigged the elections.

Zimbabwe's problem is a lot more than one of bad economic policies but one of bad governance that has left the country stuck with a corrupt and incompetent government.

The right of every human being to a meaningful say in the governance of one's country; as rightly stated in the UN Universal Human Rights Declaration, which these UN goons should know by heart but are clearly failing to uphold; is a critical requirement for good governance. Zimbabwe is in this economic and political mess precisely because the country has had 39 years of bad governance.

The country's worsening economic meltdown cannot be fixed as long as the country is stuck with the same corrupt and incompetent ruling party, with bad governance; no more than a broken leg can be fixed by attending to the flesh injury whilst doing nothing about the broken bone. We started with a simple fracture but after 39 years of messing about we now have a compound fracture.

Of course, it is infuriating for anyone who has worked hard to put Zimbabwe's bad governance problem on the table to be contradicted by these good-for-nothing UN officials claiming Zimbabwe's problem is a socio-economic one! One does not need to be a doctor or nurse to know treating the flesh wound is a bloody waste of time when the patient a broken bone sticking out!

When it comes to third world countries the UN has often been a complete waste of time. Only a complete idiot in Geneva would have come up with such a idiotic report on Zimbabwe. A "socio-economic crisis" indeed!

  2. @ Mephiso

The UN has often appointed the useless and incompetent officials to officiate on matters concerning third world countries; UN officials more interested in hobnobbing with the host country's corrupt and murderous thugs than in up holding the UN charter and values. So the ordinary people in these third world countries have always ended up having a raw deal; they face tyrannical oppression from their own government and are ignored by the UN!

The people of Zimbabwe should have expressed their outrage at the UN's failure to censure Zanu PF for blatantly rigging last year's elections. And now the same UN idiots are rubbing hot chilli in our open wound by claiming Zimbabwe's problem is not one of bad governance but a socio-economic one which the illegal Zanu PF regime can fix!

Are we not human beings too? Are we not entitled to have a meaningful say in the governance of the country, just like everyone else?

  4. Every thinking Zimbabwean out there will find the UN's suggestion that Zimbabwe's problem is a "socio-economic crisis" insulting to say the least. Zimbabwe is in this economic mess because for the last 39 years the country was stuck with a corrupt, incompetent, vote rigging and tyrannical regime. Zanu PF blatantly rigged last year's elections denying the people the opportunity to remove the regime from office.

Our problem is one of bad governance.

To keep wittering about "socio economic crisis" is like someone refusing to admit the patient has a fractured limb and insisting on treating the fresh wound.

After 39 years of rigged elections we know we have a bad governance problem. I do not need to be a doctor or nurse to know a broken leg especially when it is a compound fracture! We started with a simple fracture and now it is a compound fracture. UN has turned a blind eye to Zanu PF rigging elections for the last 39 years.

We really are fed up with this UN nonsense! If you do not want to help, then FCUK off because you are not doing the patient an favours with your nonsense!
