"Regime change" is a desirable consequence of free elections and not a dirty phrase P Guramatunhu

The level of ignorance and foolishness with which important issues are being presented by my fellow Zimbabweans makes one cringe with shame.

“Some of us were not surprised because there was really nothing to be surprised about! When Job Sikhala announced his party would remove constitutionally elected President Mnangagwa before 2023, we knew he was a mere brave messenger, the owner of the content was the government of the United States of America,” wrote Isdore Guvamombe.

“Certainly more was to follow.

“Job had all the protection and guarantees of the US Embassy in Harare, that his ranting would be protected through a raft of sanctions — albeit illegal — if the Government acted on him.”

This piece is founded on the falsehood that any Zimbabwe who desires regime change in Zimbabwe must be a puppet repeating the aspiration of his/her western handlers. Of course, this is nonsense for two basic reasons:

a)   “One man, one vote!” was a rallying cry that all blacks from all walks of life cherished and risked life and limb for in the fight for independence. “One man, one vote!” is but an abbreviated version of Article 21 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states:

1.   “Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.

2.   Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country.

3.   The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.”

Out of wickedness and greed for absolute power, Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF cronies used their military muscle to deny the people their right to free, fair and credible elections in 1980 and has done the same ever since. To rub salt to injury, the regime and its acolytes have even the chutzpah to call all those demanding the restoration of their basic human rights and freedoms puppets!

b)   Granting all the citizens the right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country is not just a birth-right but also a key requirement for good governance. The root cause of Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown and political paralysis is that the nation has been stuck with this incompetent, corrupt and murderous Zanu PF regime for 39 years and counting. The party has rigged elections starting with the 1980 elections.

When Mnangagwa took over from Mugabe in 2017, he promised to hold free, fair and credible elections. He did not keep his promise and hence the reason the West has maintain the sanctions. The regime is illegitimate and should be forced to step down. This is the only peaceful and sure way to break this cycle of rigged elections and bad governance.

It is deeply regrettable that the drive to force this illegitimate Zanu PF dictatorship to step down is being undermined by the country’s corrupt and incompetent opposition parties. By their continued participation in these flawed and illegal elections, the opposition are giving democratic credibility to Zanu PF’s illegitimate rule.

How can we ever restore our freedoms and rights when the very people we risked life and limb to elect into office to secure these rights always betray us the minute they get into power! The Greeks figured out the importance of democracy and they had their golden age. 2 500 years later, we only have to emulate them, and we are falling flat on our faces!

  1. This is typical Zanu PF mentality, the regime is justifying denying the ordinary Zimbabweans their right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country under the guise regime change is a foreign imposition. We fought for "One man, one vote!" and now this is a dirty phrase!
We risked life and limb fighting the white colonialists for the right to vote before independence. We have been fighting our own fellow black rulers, who ironically maintain they are the nation’s liberators, after independence for the same thing! How frustrating!

  2. THE MDC has described as a de facto State of Emergency, the ban and police siege on city centres in which the party had lined up protest marches against rising poverty under the Zanu PF led government.

In a statement Tuesday, MDC bemoaned dimming prospects of ever enjoying freedom of assembly under the current Emmerson Mnangagwa led government.

The prospects look dimmer, according to MDC, even with the pending introduction of the Maintenance, Peace and Order (MOPA) Bill set to replace the country’s tough security law, the Public Order and Security Act.

Tyrannical regimes have a truck load of excuses for their brutal repression regardless and every one of the excuses is feeble. It is Zanu PF’s blatant vote rigging that is the principle cause of the country’s economic meltdown and political paralysis. Zimbabwe is pariah state ruled by incompetent, corrupt and vote rigging murderous thugs. As long as the country remains a pariah state there will be no meaningful economic recovery and hence no end to the economic suffering and deaths we see today.

The street protests will never go away as long as there is economic meltdown. The regime will use brute force to stop the protest but that will fail because human beings will never suffer and die in silence like sheep!

  3. "Zimbabwe is open for business" is dead and buried and it was none other than Mnangagwa himself who killed it by blatantly rigging the 2018 elections. Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by corrupt, incompetent and murdeous thugs. No one wants to do business with thugs!

It is a pity that SADC leaders are not smart enough to see the wood from the tree otherwise they would have seen the lie of blaming Zimbabwe's economic mess on sanction!

  4. Government has increased the costs of applying for a passport by an alarming five hundred percent with effect from Monday August 19.

The new charges that are yet to be published by government will be as follows:
    Normal
    $53 to $253

This in a country where 90% are unemployed and ¾ of the population live on US$ 30 or less a month! The real tragedy in Zimbabwe is not so much that Zanu PF has failed to govern but that we have been stuck with the regime for 39 years and counting.

The people have risked life and limb to elect the MDC leaders into power in the hope they will implement the reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. MDC has had many golden chances to implement the said reforms but wasted them all. MDC has failed to implement even one reform in the 20 years it has been on the political stage.

Until Zimbabweans take the business of electing competent leaders with the seriousness the matter demands, there will be no end to the nation’s economic hardships.

  5. More Court drama on MDC court application to challenge ban on Masvingo demo.

This circus with Zanu PF is one of MDC's own making. Everyone knows that Zanu PF blatantly rigged last year's election and the regime is therefore illegitimate and should not be in office. They are in office thanks to MDC and the rest of the corrupt opposition who participated in the flawed elections giving Zanu PF a bolt-hole. Right now MDC is pushing Zanu PF for more gravy train concessions in return for MDC's full legitimacy endorsement.

Ordinary Zimbabweans have nothing to gain from the National Transition Authority MDC is demanding from Zanu PF. The people have everything to lose as the NTA will not implement any reforms. Chamisa and friends have everything to gain from the NTA, they will be back on the gravy train.

  6. Professor Jonathan Moyo says he has overwhelming evidence to expose Mnangagwa.

The Professor is smart enough to have such evidence but he also knows that Mnangagwa, although not as smart as the professor, is nonetheless smart enough to have some damaging details on the Professor himself. The reason why neither of the two gentlemen have dared to release what they know is because they feared the retaliation.

The twitter warning from Professor Moyo must be to remind Mnangagwa of just how dangerous Moyo is; may be Mnangagwa’s CIO thugs are on Moyo’s trail.

  7. As far as Zanu PF is concerned any Zimbabwean accused of "regime change" activities might have been tried and convicted of high treason because the regime went into administering the punishment without further ado. In his doctorate these former Police Commissioner, Augustine Chihuri admitted the Police have been ruthless in their dealing with regime change agents.

Mnangagwa, just like Mugabe before him, has perfected to art of double talk. After the November 2017 coup, he did not even hesitate for one second promising to hold free, fair and credible elections. And yet he continued to service and equip the Zanu PF vote rigging juggernaut.

Indeed, although Zanu PF has blatantly rigged last year's elections Mnangagwa maintains the elections were free, fair and credible. "Show us the evidence of the rigged elections!" he has often boasted.

Since last year's rigged election, Mnangagwa was quick off the mark and promised Zimbabweans in the diaspora the vote next time. He could not be bothered to explain why they were denied the vote in 2018. He has also assured the EU and other western nations that he will implement political reforms - but since last year's elections were free, fair and credible one can only imagine what these reforms are.

If we are ever to break Zanu PF's struggle hold and end this curse of rigged elections then we must accept the regime rigged last year's elections and hold its legs to the fire. The regime is illegal and should resign to allow the appointment of a competent interim administration to be entrusted the task of implementing the democratic reforms.

All those pretending the elections were not rigged or sweep the rigging under the carpet are doing so to appease Zanu PF. After 39 years of appeasement it is clear this policy has been counter productive and it is insane to continue with it! INSANE!
