Insanity comes in all manner of degrees and disguises but have two things in common; one, it is mind bogglingly repetitive. Or as the great physicist Albert Einstein aptly put it, “insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!”
Two, the
consequences of insanity can be dehumanising and catastrophic to those
concerned! Man is a creature of reason, the insane have lost the capacity to
think and reason; they have lost their humanity.
When I was a small boy,
I visited my aunt whose husband worked as a nurse-aid at Ingutsheni Hospital in
Bulawayo. This is hospital for the mentally challenged and the visit was an
eye-opener into what it means to be insane.
I observed one
patient trudging back and forth in the midday heat, watering a bed of flowers
with a leaking bucket. The patient was soaked through and through from head to
foot with water and mud without making much progress.
“Gumbo!” called out
my uncle. “You have the problem with the leaking bucket!”
Gumbo took the
bucket from his head and to examine it. He acknowledged the leak and posed for
a while, thinking what to do. “I know!” he said with renewed hope and
enthusiasm. “I will carry the bucket on my shoulder!” And with that set off!
We all laughed! My
uncle explained that it is okay on a hot day, in the middle of winter it was no
laughing matter!
Zimbabwe is stuck for
42 years and counting with a corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF
dictatorship. Four decades of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption have
left the country in economic ruins; the country’s basic services such as
education and health care have all but collapsed and millions are now living in
abject poverty.
The root cause of
Zimbabwe’s economic mess is the failure to hold free, fair and credible
elections. The nation is stuck with the Zanu PF dictatorship these 42 years
because the regime rigs elections and the country’s opposition is at sixes and
sevens as what to do to stop Zanu PF rigging elections!
The people of
Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect the now late Morgan Tsvangirai and
his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) friends to bring about the democratic
changes, as the party’s name implied, needed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections.
After 22 years, 5 of which in the 2008 to 2013 GNU, MDC has failed to implement
even one reform.
Nelson Chamisa, who
took over the leadership of MDC now renamed Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC),
is as irrational as any Ingutsheni Hospital patient!
"We commissioned experts to analyse the voters roll. I had been tipped off
by some senior government officials that the document was being tampered
with. We have infiltrators in government departments — we have
infiltrated all government departments," Chamisa told his supporters on
Sunday.
"We will not let ZEC get away with its manipulation. Starting with this
by-election, if ZEC does not address these anomalies, it will not be
well. There will be instability in the country. On the issue of voter
manipulation, do not panic. We have strategies.
"The first strategy is to ensure that ZEC policies are compatible with the
Constitution. If they don't heed our demands, then we will take legal remedies.
But we know that the courts may not be able to deliver justice fairly. We have
our own solution. We will go to the streets. We will protest against ZEC."
Chamisa was
commenting on the many irregularities and illegalities Team Pachedu has
uncovered in the 2022 voters’ roll.
Zanu PF has many,
many vote rigging tools using the voters’ roll is one of the tools but not the
only one. Zanu PF has already decided to deny 3 million Zimbabweans in the
diaspora the vote, a very significant number considering Mnangagwa won the 2018
elections with 2.4 million votes. “As long as the sanctions imposed on the regime
by the West remain,” acting party spokesperson, Patrick Chimanasa, explained.
It is a very
documented fact that Zanu PF has used bribes and coercion to reduce the rural
voters, 50% of the electorate, into medieval serfs beholden to the overbearing
Zanu PF thugs and their proxies. Rural areas remain “no go” areas to the
opposition and Zanu PF will frog march their victims to vote for the party. The
party has other ways to help it rig these elections such as unlimited funding
from the wholesale looting, monopoly over the public media, etc., etc.
But even if one
gave Chamisa and company the benefit of the doubt and assumed that stopping ZEC
messing around with the voters’ roll is the number one leak, game-changer leak,
in the Zimbabwe elections. It should be noted that ZEC has never ever produced
a verifies voters’ roll, for obvious reasons, and has already disowned the roll
Team Pachedu is using and fired the ZEC staff who released it.
ZEC will maintain
the voters’ roll Team Pachedu is using is not the official roll, it contained
raw data from the field and was yet to be cleaned up. That is a reasonable
argument, and no court will say otherwise.
No doubt the voters’
roll that will be used on election day will not be a verified roll and every
precaution will be taken to make sure Team Pachedu or anyone else does not get
a copy.
Zanu PF is rigging
these elections Chamisa and company know this for a fact, they are participating
knowing ZEC has failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters’ roll
for Pete’s sake. They also know that by participating in the flawed elections
they are giving Zanu PF legitimacy.
Gumbo’s decision to
carry the bucket on his shoulder was insane because it did not address the
problem of leaking. Chamisa and company not only failed to implement the
reforms to stop Zanu PF rigging during the 2008 to 2013 but are participating
in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy. Of course, it is insane to then
try to take away the legitimacy using the courts and/or street protests
especially when the strategies have already proved ineffective.
Morgan Tsvangirai’s Crossover rallies on the eve of the 2013 voting day was impressive. We were all shocked at Zanu PF landslide victory; how was that possible! To say the truth, we should have expected the result given Zanu PF’s carte blanche powers to rig elections. Zanu PF has these carte blanche powers still and it is naïve, to say the least, to think that the regime will not be using these powers again!
ReplyDeleteCCC’s strategies are to sue ZEC in court of law over the rigged elections and/or hold street protests over the rigging. This is all very well but these have accomplished nothing in the past and will, in all probability, accomplish nothing again.
The crazy thing is we are trying to win rigged elections because MDC failed to implement the reforms even when they had the golden chance to do so. And, worst of all, they have conned us into believing the oxymoron of winning Zanu PF rigged elections! How stupid is that!
We are a naive and gullible people who are easily hoodwinked and it is little wonder we are in a mess. CCC is no more a new political party in terms of direction than Mnangagwa's Second Republic was different from Mugabe's Zanu PF in terms of lack of direction and substance. We believed Mnangagwa's Second Republic in 2017 with the same blind loyalty we are showing to Chamisa today.
ReplyDeleteMDC has failed to implement even one democratic reform in 22 years, 5 of which in the GNU and worse still it was kept Zanu PF in power by participating in flawed elections against advice not to. Chamisa and his CCC are taking from where MDC left off, they are hell bent on participating in these 2023 elections.
Team Pachedu has uncovered evidence that ZEC is tampering with the voters' roll. It is all water off a duck's back, CCC are participating in these elections regardless.
"The commission wishes to dissociate itself with the copy of the alleged voters roll that was allegedly issued to the stakeholder concerned for the reason that it was not procedurally issued and for the record, it has reason to believe that there was connivance between certain members of its staff and a representative of the stakeholder to issue a tempered copy so as to suit that stakeholder's narrative," ZEC acting chief elections officer Jane Pamhirai Chigidji said.
ReplyDeleteZEC has hardly been an embodiment of credibility, but the latest shenanigans have shattered any trace of believability in the commission as an arbiter of free and fair elections. In a democracy, there is no way ZEC would be allowed to superintend over any kind of election.
There is no denying that ZEC has lost credibility the evidence produce by Team Pachedu has add to the mountain of evidence we already had that Zanu PF was rigging these elections. ZEC and Zanu PF have one thing working in their favour, they know that MDC/CCC leaders will participate in these flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy. When all is said and done only two things really matter:
a) Zanu PF winning the 2/3 majority plus the presidency
b) Zanu PF getting political legitimacy regardless of all the evidence the elections were rigged
Of course, Mnangagwa would love to get the two in a free, fair and credible election process but he is smart enough to know if he had free and fair elections Zanu PF would have lost power decades ago! He has settled for having the power without the caveat! “Zvine muto ndozvineyi!” as one would say in Shona!
INSTEAD of fulfilling its obligation to prosecute the known perpetrators of the crimes against Tawanda Muchehiwa and other human rights activists, the State seems to be shielding the perpetrators and putting the victims on trial.
ReplyDeleteOn July 30, 2020, Tawanda Muchehiwa, a Zimbabwean human rights activist, was abducted from a hardware shop in Bulawayo.
CCTV footage shows men removing Muchehiwa from the car he was in and stuffing him in a white Isuzu truck that sped off.
The car is shown stopping a few hundred metres away and men are seen transferring Muchehiwa from the truck into a white Ford Ranger.
The licence plate of the Ford Ranger is clearly captured by CCTV cameras. Investigations revealed that the car used in the abduction of Muchehiwa was from Impala Car Rental.
Zimbabwe is a failed state because there is no rule of law, among the many other problems. The three factors that have contributed to Zimbabwe becoming a lawless nation are:
1) The country’s laws are weak and feeble. There is no denying the country’s 2013 constitution is weak contrary to the claims by some including the MDC leaders who maintained it was “MDC child!” The truth is Mugabe “dictated” the document as Paul Mangwana, Zanu PF MP and co-chair of the parliamentary committee that drafted the constitution. The fact that the new constitution has failed to deliver free and fair elections is proof it is a feeble law.
2) The law is but a tool its effectiveness in delivery justice and maintaining the peace depends on those tasked to enforce the law. Even if the 2013 constitution had been watertight Zimbabwe would still be in trouble because no one in their right mind would expect the country’s already by then captured Police, Courts, Army, etc. to enforce the law. This is the reason why country needed to implement many reforms to end Zanu PF corrupting influence. Some of the hardcore office bearers whose Zanu PF links were the only reason they were in those positions had to be fired.
3) The third element in the rule of law is the realisation that we all benefit from the upholding of the rule of law and therefore it is our duty to make sure there are good laws, those entrusted to enforce the law do it without fear or favour and, most important of all, if there is lawlessness, we fight tirelessly to restore rule of law.
In an interview with Trevor Ncube, Dr Simba Makoni, revealed when Zanu PF cronies became hooked to the gravy train mentality. “Within a few months of getting into office the then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe replaced the Peugeot Ian Smith had allocated to his ministers with E class Mercedes Benz!” he explained. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSQQlF5Hlbc
ReplyDeleteWhen Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends joined Mugabe to form the GNU, Mugabe saw to it that they too were issued with the whatever was the latest Mercedes Benz, the very generous salaries and allowances, a US$ 4 million mansion for Tsvangirai, many opportunities to globetrot, etc., etc. The world looks rosy from the comfort of brand-new limo; of course, it does, the glass windows rosy tinted!
“Mazivanhu eMDC adzidza kudya anyerere!” (MDC leaders have learned to enjoy the gravy train lifestyle. They will never rock the boat!) boasted Zanu PF cronies when asked during the 2008 to 2013 why MDC was not implementing any reforms.
Having wasted their golden opportunity to implement any reforms during the GNU MDC leaders have all but abandon reforms as a lost cause and have been participating in flawed and illegal elections knowing fully well Zanu PF was rigging and that by participating they were giving legitimacy to Zanu PF. Still, they have participated because they also knew that Zanu PF was offering a few gravy train seat to entice the opposition – these they found irresistible!
The MDC leaders have maintained a stone-silence on why they failed to implement even one token reform during the GNU. And to hide the true reason why they keep participating in flawed elections, Chamisa and company have claimed to have “winning in rigged elections strategies!” All hot air, of course!
The double tragedy is that the ordinary Zimbabweans have been gullible to believe the oxymoronic winning in rigged election nonsense. And, more significantly, the people have paid dearly for their naivety, they are at the coalface of the economic meltdown and tyrannical oppression.
Chamisa and company have changed the party name from MDC to CCC, red regalia is now yellow, etc. but their resolve to participate in flawed elections out of greed is untouched. A cobra will cast off its old skin from time to time but never its venom and fangs
