"We must not betray the people" says opportunist Mudzuri - did by failing to implement reforms P Guramatunhu

“I am aware that there have been expressions of opposing views, trading of nasty words, accusations and counter accusations, anger and frustrations, but I think we need to sober up, sit down together and face the reality of the judgement and its far-reaching implications to the well-being of the party,” said Elias Mudzuri. He was commenting of the recent Court judgement declaring Chamisa’s 2018 succession illegal.

“The starting point is to accept that we erred in the manner in which we handled the succession and transformation matrixes of the party.”

As one of the three VPs hoping to succeed Tsvangirai, there is no denying that Mudzuri was disappointed with Chamisa’s palace coup that left him and Thokozani Khupe out in the cold. Whilst Khupe commanded so following and broke away, Mudzuri had no such following and swallowed his pride and accept the subordinate role in the Chamisa led faction.

Of course, Mudzuri welcomed the Court judgement. Whilst Douglas Mwonzora and Morgen Komichi, who too had grudgingly acquiesced to Chamisa’s leadership, had openly supported the Court challenge; Mudzuri had not even commented until now.

Elias Mudzuri is one of those characters with a knack to disappear before the first shot is fired, let the others do the fighting, only to reappear when he is absolutely certain it is safe to do so and join the victory parade! Now he wants to be seen and heard and would not miss it for all the tea in China!

“It creates the best opportunity for the leadership of the MDC to pause and avert a possible bruising split that will not benefit anyone except our opponents,” continued the now rejuvenated Elias Mudzuri.

“We must get into the 2023 harmonised elections as a united family with one objective of taking over power from Zanu-PF so as to change the fortunes of Zimbabwe.

“We must not betray the people of Zimbabwe who in the more than two decades have invested so much into this project of change for a better Zimbabwe.”

What a truckload of bull! What democratic changes have you and your fellow MDC leaders brought in the two decades? Not even one!

The people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect MDC leaders into power on the promise the party will bring about the democratic changes, as the party’s own name implied, the nation has been dying for.

The best opportunity to implement the democratic reforms was during the 2008 to 2013 GNU, SADC leaders had forced Robert Mugabe to agree to the 2008 implementation of the raft of democratic reforms following the signing of the Global Political Agreement. The task of implementing the reforms fell to MDC and the party failed to get even one reform implemented in five years!

SADC leaders tried to salvage the situation by asking the 2013 election to be postpone until the reforms are implemented. “If you go into elections next month, you are going to lose; the elections are done!” SADC leaders warned Tsvangirai et al at the SADC Maputo Summit in June 2013. But once again MDC leaders paid no heed.

MDC leaders KNEW Zanu PF was rigging the 2013 elections and, worst of all, they also KNEW that by participating they would give credibility to the elections and thus legitimacy to the results; as David Coltart readily admitted.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the (2013) elections,” wrote Senator Coltart in his book The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

The MDC factions did form a coalition before the 2018 elections and still they contested the elections for the same reason as in 2013 – greed.

Nothing has been done to get the reforms implemented since the rigged 2018 elections.

MDC leaders wasted the golden opportunity to implement the reforms during the 2008 GNU because they sold-out, they were busy enjoying the trappings of high office they forgot about the reforms. By participating in these flawed and illegal elections MDC leaders are giving Zanu PF legitimacy but they do not care as long as they get the few bait seats on offer.

“We must not betray the people of Zimbabwe!” You betrayed them by failing to implement even one reform and continue to betray them by participating and legitimising a flawed and illegal election process! Mudzuri and company are in power, they have forgotten about the need for democratic changes and reforms as the pre-requisite free, fair and credible elections!

The people of Zimbabwe must now wake-up to the political reality that, for the last 20 years, the country has made no progress in the fight for free, just and democratic Zimbabwe. Not because there have been no opportunities to achieve that goal but rather because MDC leaders, entrusted to implement the reforms, are corrupt, incompetent and have sold-out in the past and are selling-out even now!

If Zimbabwe is to ever have free, fair and credible elections then we must appoint competent and incorruptible men and women to implement the reforms. Chamisa, Khupe, Mudzuri and their fellow MDC leaders have proven these last 20 years beyond all reason doubt that they are not up to the task! The very fact that there are still Zimbabweans out there who continue to sheepishly support these failed MDC leaders goes to show the country is not yet ready for democracy and good governance.

  1. OPPOSITION leader, Nelson Chamisa has taken refuge in the wilderness this Easter weekend seeking God’s intervention to Zimbabwe’s abundant challenges.

NewZimbabwe.com contacted the outspoken politician this weekend for a comment after several repeated attempts failed, on his opinion following a recent Supreme Court judgment that “dethroned” him as president of the MDC Alliance.

In response, Chamisa said he was unable to comment as he was in the wilderness and would only speak on the Supreme Court ruling in the next few weeks.

Well, let’s just say that God was certainly not in the illegal palace coup of February 2018! We now await to hear what Chamisa, after the days in the wilderness, supposedly consulting God, will say on the matter!

  2. “If Mwonzora is the constitutionalist he says he is and fully embraces the Supreme Court judgment declaring invalid and void all appointments and decisions made by Chamisa then let us see him resign his Senate seat for he was appointed onto the Manicaland PR (provisional representative) Senate list by Chamisa,” Ncube said.

“The same applies to Komichi, who comes from Masvingo, but pleaded with Chamisa to appoint him and place him as No.2 on the Midlands Senate list ahead of (Francisco) Masendeke who was then chairman of Midlands South. He too must, in good conscience resign his Senate seat for the same reason.

“Then VP Mudzuri who had been beaten in a primary election in Harare, had to be appointed by Chamisa onto the Harare Senate PR list ahead of (James) Makore who was sitting Senator, he too cannot have his cake and eat it too,” Ncube said.

However, in response, Mwonzora said he would not resign as he was qualified to be a Senator not because of the benevolence of anyone.

“I applied and was approved as a Senate candidate by the elections directorate of the main MDC. My candidature was approved by the National Council. I am a Senator because I objectively qualified and not because of the benevolence of anyone,” said Mwonzora

Did Welshman Ncube himself not break away from the MDC only to come back because it helped him get back into power? It is all about power, none of the these MDC leaders care about the ordinary people- if they did they would have implemented the democratic reforms during the GNU!

  3. Zimbabwe is not carrying out the tests in anything near what it should. South Africa has carried out over 47 000 tests compared to 400 or less than 1%. SA's population is nearly 60 million compared to Zimbabwe's 16 million.

Zimbabwe has not bought any corona virus test kits, only relying on the 500 kits donated by WHO. And yet Mnangagwa spend US$4.5 million to fund POLAD's anti-sanctions lobby activities! What Mnangagwa is hoping to achieve with his tours from city to city is anyone's guess, there are just a popularity stunt at a time when the nation is desperate for effective action!

  4. “Tests should be done expeditiously and they (doctors) said we should also move out of Harare and go to other areas. Even before the lockdown, we did not know who had been where and who they had visited and met. We need to do more testing using facilities that are there. I am equally not happy myself that we have only tested over 400 people. We need to have tested more,” Mohadi said.

The truth is Mohadi and company are corrupt, incompetent and have no clue what they are doing. They are still in power after 40 years but only because they rig elections. The best Mohadi and company can do right now is for them to step down so the nation can appoint an interim administration deal with the pandemic and, most important of all, implement the democratic reforms and prepare the nation for free, fair and credible elections.

Sadly, it has taken all from Mohadi to even acknowledge the regime has failed to prepare the country for corona virus. Giving up power is a bridge too far for this lot to cross! They will sooner burn the whole country to ashes than let anyone else rule it! That is the kind of nincompoops we are dealing with in Zanu PF!

  5. When Elias Mudzuri was elected Executive Mayor of Harare in 2002 he became obsessed about getting all the trappings of high office his Zanu PF successor got, the mansion, the limos, etc. The Zanu PF Minister of Local government realised this and went out of his way to frustrate Mudzuri. Many people, notably The Independent newspaper, advised Mudzuri to focus on the important business of improving the lives of the people of Harare.
The people had voted for Mudzuri and his MDC friends to attend to the city’s many teething problems of poor refuse collection, no running water, pot-holed roads, etc. Solomon Tawengwa, the first Executive Mayor of Harare, a Mugabe loyalist, demanded a posh 4x4 Landrover over and above his limo because “he could not drive his limo into the pot-holes!” he argued. It never occurred to him that his job was not repair the potholes.
Sadly, Mudzuri, just like Tawengwa was just as obsessed about his personal comforts and the trappings of high office. He did not listen to anyone else!
Even now when it is clear that participating in elections is an exercise in futility as long as there are the few gravy train seats to be won, Mudzuri is one of the MDC A senators following the 2018 elections, we will never stop these MDC sell-outs participating in future elections. Mudzuri has his beady eyes fixed on 2023 elections, he has done nothing to fight for reforms. Zanu PF is counting on people like Mudzuri’s greed to legitimise its continued rule!

  6. @ Nduna
“Mudzuri an opportunist? Really? His crime being to advocate for constitutionalism and following court orders! Grow up man Patrick.”
Batshele Nduna, you are shallow minded, thick and slow. Mudzuri is advocating for constitutionalism here because it is in his selfish interest and what is more he is doing so belatedly, when the fighting in done, typical of an opportunist. Mucheka dzafa!
Patrick has highlighted an even more significant issue here, the issue of elections. Mudzuri is wittering about “not betraying the people of Zimbabwe” and yet that is exactly what he and his fellow MDC sell-outs have done by failed to implement even one democratic reform.
Mudzuri is one of the MDC Alliance Senators following the 2018 rigged elections. Of course, Mudzuri knew that Zanu PF was rigging the elections but he also knew the party was giving away a few gravy train seats. Mnangagwa, and Mugabe before him, knows that Zanu PF will get away with rigged elections as long as the party gives away a few gravy train seats to entice the opposition to participate in the elections regardless how flawed the process.
Zimbabwe’s fight for free, fair and credible elections has all but stalled because people like Elias Mudzuri have sold-out; they not only failed to implement the reforms but are now giving credibility to a flawed process for their own selfish gain, for a senatorial seat!
Why is the political reality of MDC leaders being selling-out so incomprehensible to you, even now with all the benefit of hindsight and detailed explanation from people like Patrick!
Some people are destined to see but never perceive; to hear without ever understanding. Well just as well your incomprehension, your failure to perceive and to understand is equally incomprehensible to your shallow mind. And so, you will go through life blissfully unaware what a first class idiot you are! I will not waste my time asking you to grow up, it would be like asking the same of a stone!

  7. 32 Zimbabweans have landed in Harare, mainly from UK. They will be quarantined at ZIPAM, Darwendale, Nick Mangwana has said.
Prepare for an exodus from SA, Botswana and other regional countries as the pandemic hits these countries. It is bad enough to be a foreigner in good times but is bad times such as these corona pandemic days, many would rather suffer and die in their own home land!

  8. Zimbabwe will not be in this mess, still stuck with this corrupt and incompetent Zanu PF dictatorship, if Ms Mushonga and her follow MDC leaders had implemented the democratic reforms necessary for free, fair and credible elections. They continued participating in flawed elections has only helped give the dictatorship legitimacy.
Ms Mushonga have sold-out of the national cause of implementing the reforms to ensure free, fair and credible elections for the sake of few gravy train seats Zanu PF gives away to entice the opposition to participate in elections regardless how flawed and illegal the process. So she is offering the long suffering Zimbabweans a few coins of her thirty piece of silver as recompense for her selling-out in the past and to buy the people’s continued support so she can continue selling out! Judas, keep your filth money!
