"MDC hopes sanction will starve masses into rebellion" lied Dr Mavaza - what some do for 30 pieces of silver P Guramatunhu

I believe in freedom of expression but not when the exercise of that right means freedom to offend, to brainwash and stifle debate and/or, worse still, to incite, lawlessness and thuggery!
“The MDC Alliance in a bid to please their sponsors elsewhere have plunged the nation into the pool of confusion and suffering. The sanctions which are imposed on Zimbabwe has made the business and economy die and unemployment increase in a way only witnessed in a fiction movie,” wrote Dr Mavaza in his recent article.

“The country is profusely bleeding The unpatriotic behaviour exhibited by the MDC Alliance should not be swept under the carpet. MDC through Hwende have shown Zimbabweans that they are the ones behind the sanctions. They actually said sanctions are helping Zimbabweans. In actual fact the sanctions are starving Zimbabweans. The MDC is hoping to starve the people to rebellion. All along MDC A has refused to admit that they are the ones who have begged for sanctions in the country."
There are so many aspects in this sanction debate that Zanu PF have ignored and thus making it clear the party is not interested in an honest and informative debate of the subject. For example, whilst the regime has gone to town on how sanctions have destroyed the Zimbabwe economy it has failed to provide any hard evidence to support this.
Whatever damage is being inflected by the sanctions is nothing compared to that caused by corruption and mismanagement. In the beginning, the regime denied there was corruption but has since admitted the problem or be it grudgingly.
In 2016 then President Mugabe the country was being “swindled out of US$15 billion in lost diamond revenue alone. He never arrested even one diamond swindler nor has Mnangagwa, his successor.
Last month ZACC admitted that the commission had identified US$ 7 billion is assets and cash that have been salted out of the country. It is no secret that ZACC will never stamp out corruption because the Godfathers behind the corruption and government leaders including President Mnangagwa himself.
It is clear the regime is blaming the country’s economic meltdown on sanctions just to draw attention away from the root causes of corruption, mismanagement and the rotten political system which has allowed Zanu PF to remain in power regardless of the party’s economic failures.
Even if sanctions were the root cause of Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown, one has to ask why the regime and its apologists are targeting the opposition leaders and not the western nations who imposed the sanctions. The regime has dismissed opposition leaders as nothing more than “the West’s puppets”. So why punish the puppet for the omission of his master!
Worse of all, why are ordinary Zimbabweans being denied their freedoms and rights including the right to free, fair and credible elections and even the right to life itself. Zanu PF imposed this de facto one-party dictatorship for the same selfish reasons the white colonialists did.
So instead of independence restoring the freedoms and rights the whites had denied the black majority all it did was replace the white oppressor with the Zanu PF oppressors.
The number one item, indeed the only item, on the national agenda should be the restoration of the individual freedoms and rights including the holding of free, fair and credible elections. It is no surprise that Zanu PF and its apologists are using every dirty trick in the book to have sanctions as the only item on the national agenda by pretending it is the hardship caused by sanction pushing the masses to rebel against the dictatorship.
Even the simpletons who have believed all the Zanu PF lies and propaganda have woken up to the reality that for them to have any meaningful say in the country's destiny, they must restore their political power to hold those in power to account. They must have the power to remove Zanu PF, if need be, from office and the only sure way to regain that power is by making sure there free, fair and credible elections.
It is very sad indeed that 40 years after independence we are still fighting for the same basic freedoms and rights so many suffered and died for before independence. So, yesterday's liberators have become today's oppressors.
"76% of those fighting in the Rhodesia Front Army were blacks!" A white supremacist once boasted.
The racial colour of the oppressors has changed, there are still as many sell-outs ready and willing to serve the new masters! Zanu PF has never had any problems finding Zimbabweans willing to sell their own mothers for a price. Even now with all the 40 years of documented evidence of Zanu PF corruption and tyranny, there people like Professor Mthuli Ncube, Kirsty Coventry, Dr Mavaza, and many, many others who will falsify the party’s record and defend the dictatorship for the sake of thirty pieces of silver!

The Zimbabwean recently travelled to Manchester, UK, and was back in the country on15th March, compliantly putting himself on self-quarantine, in line with National Control Policy," said George Charamba.

"He then telephoned his doctors after showing symptoms that suggested infection. A COVID-19 RAPID REACTION TEAM reached him to get samples for tests. The patient received treatment at home and is making good recovery progress. The responsible Ministry urges calmness and exhorts all Zimbabweans to uphold highest standards of hygiene at home and away."
The fear is this is the ears of the hippo, the rest of the beast is hidden in the muddy water. As time progresses, the muddy waters will clear and the flood level drop, to reveal the hippopotamus in its full ugliness, reveal the full extend of the corona virus outbreak.

Coronavirus is testing well-resourced nations to the limit. Mark my word; coronavirus will test Zimbabwe, a poorly resourced and poorly governed nation, to total destruction!

  2. Before Mbeki's visit, sources said, regional leaders had the view that Chamisa did not want dialogue, but they later realised through discussions with him and other senior MDC party officials that he was just against the idea of participating in a dialogue being held under the discredited Polad platform, which many have dismissed as Mnangagwa's political fan club.

Sadc leaders publicly supported Mnangagwa's rise to power on the back of a military coup against the then president Robert Mugabe in November 2017, although they privately urged him to hastily undertake political and economic reforms to legitimise his reign.

Sources told the Zimbabwe Independent this week that Sadc leaders are frustrated by Mnangagwa's refusal to allow the Mbeki mediation to take shape. They are also frustrated by his failure to turn around the country's political and economic fortunes, which they are convinced makes Zimbabwe the albatross on the regional grouping's neck.

"There is growing frustration in the Sadc region about Mnangagwa's failure to give Mbeki the chance to mediate in the political impasse. They now think that Zimbabwe is not serious about transforming its economy. There is huge disgruntlement over this issue in the diplomatic circles and the entire region," a Sadc diplomat accredited to Harare said.
"This is just one example of the many cases that have frustrated investors. So they were saying, in one of the plenary sessions, it is useless to sign deals with people who are not serious about implementation. If you closely examine the communique from the Gaborone bi-national commission, you will realise that there was only one deal signed and the other six were memoranda of agreement in education, wildlife, cultural exchange and similar sectors and nothing was concerning the more serious economic sectors like mining and manufacturing," a source who travelled to Botswana said.

South Africa's ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mphakama Mbete, recently openly criticised government for meddling in business.

"Zimbabwe has presented itself to be open for business, which we believe is an appropriate approach to developing this country and economy. However, in order to attract significant flows of direct investment, it is important that Zimbabwe improves its record concerning the following issues: security of tenure and investment protection; repatriation of proceeds by investors; the honouring of bilateral trade and investment agreements; the need to open up the economy to competition; establishment of new credibilities and lastly, optimal debt servicing," he said while addressing a Polad economic summit in Harare last month.
POLAD is Mnangagwa’s fan club alright but SADC leaders should also be smart enough to know the Zanu PF and MDC power sharing arrangement Chamisa is proposing is not a solution either. The arrangement is 2008 GNU mark-2. SADC leaders know we are in this mess precisely because GNU mark-1 failed to get even one reform implemented and mark-2 will not do any better!
Zanu PF blatantly rigged the July 2018 elections and to pretend these elections were free, fair and credible and that Zanu PF has a mandate to govern is downright foolish. By blatantly rigging the elections Zanu PF confirmed the Zimbabwe was still a pariah state, same as before the November 2017 military coup.
As long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state there will be no meaningful economic recovery. No one wants to do business in a pariah state. As long as Zanu PF remains in power, be it on it’s own or in a power sharing arrangement, Zimbabwe will remain a pariah state.
SADC leaders must know, Zimbabwe needs a solution to its political impasse and not another gimmick!

  3. In a tweet Chamisa said, "I have just been informed by City authorities that we have two new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Harare this morning. Please take preventive measures and exercise extreme caution wherever you are. We must together ACT to stop the virus from spreading. Remember to always wash your hands."
Zimbabwe is in this political and economic mess because of 40 years of gross mismanagement, rampant corruption and tyrannical rule the people of Zimbabwe have dragged their feet over this; they have done nothing to restore good governance. The nation has had many golden opportunities to end the Zanu PF dictatorship but wasted them all. Now we are paying for our folly!
The nation is facing one of those one in a generation or dynasty catastrophic challenges that befalls every nation. The coronavirus is a pandemic, every nation will be challenge.
Whilst some nations are well resourced and have well-oiled state institutions to deal this the challenges coronavirus brings. Zimbabwe has wasted her material and human resources like the prodigal son and it is naïve to expect this incompetent and corrupt government to do anything right even with the little the nation has.
Fellow Zimbabweans, buckle up! We are in for a rough ride down the Victoria Falls on tree trunk!

  4. @ Newsday
This shows how the government of the day has misplaced priorities.

The situation at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital is a reflection of the dire state of the healthcare system in the country. Other critical sectors are going through similar lean periods as the government has abandoned them
The dreadful state of affairs at the health centres has resulted in unnecessary loss of lives due to the failure by the President Emmerson Mnangagwa-led administration to provide healthcare centres with basic medicines such as antibiotics and pain relievers.
I agree with you 100% on your assessment that our health care service is not fit for purpose. However you are wrong to view the failure as limited to the Mnangagwa administration for this has been going on for the last 40 years.
I do not need to remind you that the late Robert Mugabe went to Singapore no few than 8 times for a eye check up in 2012 each trip costing a cool US$3 million! With US$24 million the country could have built, equipped and staffed one of the best eye hospitals in the world!
The tragedy in Zimbabwe is that we have had many golden opportunities to end this failed Zanu PF dictatorship but have instead done nothing.
In the long run, nations get the government they deserve and we certainly deserve this corrupt, incompetent and vote rigging Zanu PF dictatorship complete with its entourage of equal corrupt, incompetent and utterly useless opposition parties, all 130 of them at the last count!
Coronavirus is testing well governed nations to the limit and those nations with corrupt and dysfunctional governments it is breaking and crashing them like bugs! If the truth be said; of course, we deserve to suffer and die!

  5. Confucius, a Chinese sage, was asked what is the most important human quality mankind should aspire to get. “Empathy!” answered the sage. He was spot on!

One of the best-ever definitions of empathy is given in the Bible.

“The "Golden Rule" of Leviticus 19:18 was quoted by Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 7:12; see also Luke 6:31) and described by him as the second great commandment. The common English phrasing is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".” To quote Wikipedia.

Come to think of it, empathy is but common sense really. Whilst one is in a position of advantage, power, authority, etc. one must never abuse their advantage to the detriment of others because tomorrow the shoe may be in the other foot, the people you abused may have the advantage over you.

I agree, Zimbabwe is stuck in this political and economic mess because we have the grave misfortune to have the scum of the earth for leaders, men and women with no common sense, no empathy, call it what you will. Yesterday’s liberator have effortlessly transformed into today’s oppressors; they were wolves in sheep’s coat and casting it off was easy.

People like Professor Mthuli Ncube, Minister Kirsty Coventry, upstarts like Dr Mavaza have no common sense and therefore are easily seduced. They will sell their own mothers for a price and be proud they had a mother to sell. They are willing tools in tyrants like Mnangagwa and Mugabe’s hands.

Of course, Dr Mavaza knows Zimbabwe is stuck in this economic and political mess because of the curse of rigged elections and bad governance. He and the rest are pretending this is not the case because it is in their selfish interest to do so.

We are stuck in a rut because those in position of power and authority to get us out of the mess do not have the common sense to do so as time and time again they have failed to resist the temptation to take advantage of the situation for selfish gain!

  6. The debate on whether or not it is sanctions or corruption that is causing Zimbabwe's economic meltdown is all but a settled matter - it is corruption and sanctions are just a feeble excuse. It is shocking that someone as well informed as Dr Mavaza would still beating the old sanctions drum.

It is very sad indeed that Zimbabwe has a very large number of intellectuals and professionals who are still willing to falsify the facts and reality on the ground for selfish reasons. Very, very sad!

As a nation, we should be spending all our energy, time and treasure on ending the curse of bad governance without which we cannot end corruption. Instead we are being drag back again and again to discuss side issues like sanctions by people who know these are side issues just to take the nation's attention away from good governance. They are or hope to profit from bad governance and hence the reason they want the status quo to remain.

  7. “This second patient is a 30-year-old male resident of Harare, who had travelled to New York, United States of America on the February 29 and returned home on March 9 via Johannesburg.
“He started exhibiting mild symptoms (flu-like illness) on March 12 which progressively got worse on March 19.”
Moyo urged Zimbabweans to remain calm as his ministry embarked on contact tracing.
“Our teams are now engaged in contact tracing and are being assisted by the patient himself,” said Moyo.
“We call for the nation to be calm as we deal with the cases of Covid-19 in Zimbabwe.”
The country confirmed its first case of coronavirus in a 39-year-old Caucasian male who is a resident of Victoria Falls and had travelled to Manchester, United Kingdom on March 7 and returned on March 15 via South Africa.
The two confirmed cases have been in the country for the last 10 and 7 days respectively travelling and mixing freely with the public and not in any form of isolation. The question is how many other people did the come into close contact with in that period? How many other cases are there out there?
There is good reason for anyone with half a brain to be worried sick about coronavirus in Zimbabwe because it is clear the country’s broken health care service will not contain the virus. The country is a sitting duck in every sense of the phrase!
Zimbabwe has only tested 16 individuals so far, it is little wonder many got through the net! The price for having done nothing to ensure the country had a competent government has just shot up; before coronavirus blows over the country will go through hell-on-earth!

  8. The debate on whether or not it is sanctions or corruption that is the root causes of the country's economic meltdown has ranged on ever since the sanctions were imposed back in 2001. Back then Mugabe and his apologists denied that corruption existed much less a problem.
Corruption has been self-evident, the extravagant lifestyles of the ruling elite said it all. Billions of dollars were being creamed-off from the economy to build the palatial mansions; to bankroll the well-funded but wasteful business empires; to buy the posh cars, 45 gold watches and other luxuries; to pay for foreign trips for pleasure, education, health care, etc. and the list goes on and on.
The mountain of evidence that corruption was rampant has been there for all to see. In 2012 alone Mugabe travelled to the Far East for eye check-up 8 times @ US$3 million a trip. In 2016 Mugabe admitted the country was “swindled out of US$ 15 billion in lost diamond revenue alone”! How the hell can any nation survive much less thrive give such serious economic haemorrhaging!
People like Dr Mavaza have ignored the mountain of evidence of the rampant corruption and have continued to blame sanctions as the root cause of the country’s economic meltdown for selfish reasons. They do not want the truth to be known that corruption is indeed the root cause because they want to protect those behind the corruption, the ruling elite.
Dr Mavaza, Professor Mthuli Ncube, Minister Coventry and all the other apologists and sell-outs working for Zanu PF will all swear the July 2018 elections were free, fair and credible just as they have denied corrupt is a problem for exactly the same reason- to protect the Zanu PF ruling elite.
Dr Mavaza and the other apologists and sell-out have one thing in common with their Zanu PF ruling elite masters whom they serve so blindly; they have no empathy for others.
To know that one should to take advantage of one’s present situation to oppress and exploit others is common sense because one must remember that tomorrow the shoe may be in the other foot. We are a nation in whom common sense, empathy, is a very rare quality indeed. It is little wonder we are stuck in this cycle of yesterday’s liberators becoming today’s oppressor.

“I can't believe Patrick you spent time to write about a clown called Masimba.”

I totally agree, Dr Mavaza is a clown and a sell-out. He will sell his own mother for a price and be proud he had a mother to sell. Still, as long as these sell-out and their Zanu PF masters remain in power we cannot ignore them. We must expose their lies and why they are lying and better still remind them that they and their masters will be held to democratic account one of these fine days!

If Judas Iscariot hanged himself for betraying Jesus; I think those who betray the nation must be held to account too!

  10. @ Ray Mwareya

Zimbabwe is reporting zero to little Corona Virus (COVID-19) infection cases because the country has no testing capabilities says, Dr. Larry Brilliant, the famous American epidemiologist who helped eradicate Smallpox; the former executive director of Google.org and consultant doctor on the hit Hollywood horror film Contagion.

In a country whose economy is already in ruins and the health care service has all but totally collapsed, Zimbabwe’s strategy should have been to throw all the little resources she has in making sure there is no coronavirus outbreak in the country. All travelling outside the country should have been restricted immediately. All arrivals are quarantined for fourteen days. All suspected cases were to be tested. And all frontline staff were to be fully kitted from the word go!

The country did not put any foreign travellers under quarantine, only 16 people have ever been tested, frontline staff had no protective clothing, etc.

Now the virus is in the country, two cases have been confirmed so far, we do not have the resources to contain the outbreak. The gene is out of the bottle and there is no putting it back!

Countries like Zimbabwe will record a lot more deaths than countries like China and the West because whilst the latter nations had the patients on ventilators, give patients a fighting chance; there will be no such assistance offer in Zimbabwe. None!
