“President Emmerson Mnangagwa is finalising drafting legislation that will restore stability and eliminate mischief in the money markets, his spokesperson George Charamba said,” reported Daily News,
“Charamba also revealed that Mnangagwa will use emergency powers to deal with unexplained wealth and bank deposits in wide-sweeping measures that will see tighter bank surveillance as well as target tax dodgers.
"If we find that an account that had two cents yesterday suddenly has $40 million, the first thing we do is to provisionally impound that and we push the onus for you to explain the source of those funds," he warned ominously.
It is common knowledge that President Mnangagwa himself is one of the wealthiest individuals in the country. Will he lead by example then and explain where he got his wealth?
The President can then come you! We already know that you, Mr George Charamba, were paid mouth-watering sums of money as one of the directors of the Public Service Medical Aid Society. Whilst you and your fellow directors and top managers, looted the funds the lowly paid civil servants who paid the membership fee were being deny the medical care because there was no money to pay for it!
Soon after independence Mugabe came up with the leadership code which was meant to stop leaders abusing their position for person gain. We know it did not work hence the reason the country is in the gutter as a result of the wholesale looting by the leaders. Mugabe kept a detailed account of each leaders looting activities, he even actively encourage leaders to be corrupt, for the purpose of blackmailing the individuals.
Corruption has been endemic in Zimbabwe and it was not because the country did not have laws to stamp it. We have the laws and the manpower to enforce the law. What has been lacking is the political will to stamp out corruption. It is impossible to stamp out corruption when those entrusted with the power and authority to do so are themselves corrupt and worst of all are accountable to no one.
“Si quis custodiet ipsos custodes caro?” (Who will guard the guards if they are corrupt?) asked Roman poet Juvenal.
This is the insidious question that has dogged human kind from the dawn of civilisation. Those societies, nations, etc. who have deserved the necessary checks and balance to ensure those entrusted with power and authority, the greater the power the greater damage, are always accountable to those who granted them power, the people. ALWAYS!
Zimbabwe is in this economic and political mess with 75% of the population now living in abject poverty as a result of 38 years and counting of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption by the few ruling elite. The people have been totally helpless to stop the criminal waste of the nation’s resources and tragic human suffering and deaths because Zanu PF thugs have usurped the people’s freedoms and rights rendering them utterly powerless.
In Zanu PF ruled Zimbabwe; the corrupt and tyrannical ruling elite are holding the majority to ransom. It is the tail that is wagging the dog!
Elections are the ultimate expression of the people holding those entrusted to govern the country to democratic account. President Mnangagwa and his junta blatantly rigged the 30 July 2018 elections, proof the junta is NOT accountable to the people.
“The final results as announced by the Electoral Commission contained numerous errors and lacked adequate traceability, transparency and verifiability. Finally, the restrictions on political freedoms, the excessive use of force by security forces and abuses of human rights in the post-election period undermined the corresponding positive aspects during the pre-election campaign. As such, many aspects of the 2018 elections in Zimbabwe failed to meet international standards,” stated the EU Election Observer Mission final report.
In other words, ZEC failed to produce the voters’ roll, V11 forms (summary of vote count at each polling station, etc. to prove where President Mnangagwa’s 2.4 million votes came from. In short, the result was completely fictitious and nothing to do with the democratic wish of the people of Zimbabwe.
If nothing is done to remove this Zanu PF junta from office before the next elections, in 2023, we can be certain that the party will rig those elections too. Unless something is done to dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship, the party will rig the elections to stay in power just as it has done for the last 38 years already.
President Mnangagwa will use the emergency power to give himself more tyrannical power with which silence his political opponents, crItics and rivals alike. If anyone needs emergency powers then it is the people, emergency powers to force Mnangagwa and his junta to step down. After 38 years of autocratic rule, Mnangagwa et al are now addicted to absolute power, they will not give it up without a fight!
The Americans made their position clear: hold free and fair elections and we will lift the sanctions. Is Strive Masiyiwa calling for the sanctions to be lifted because the elections were free and fair? Or does he accept the elections were rigged and does not care, he just wants the sanctions lifted regardless?
ReplyDeleteThe elections were rigged and to call for the lifting of the sanctions regardless is being irresponsible because good governance start with the governed holding those in power to account!
Zanu PF has ruled for the last 38 years the nation's economy is in ruins who are you blaming for that? If MDC then Zanu PF must step down because they clearly have failed to contain these MDC goons!
ReplyDeleteThe 16 November 1979 Lancaster House change are the potential to bring about great changes if only Mugabe and his thugs had not highjacked the revolution! Last November was a false start, only the naive and gullible believed Mnangagwa capable of giving up the Zanu PF dictatorial powers and hold free and fair elections.
ReplyDeleteUnless the people take the trouble to understand why the 1980 independence was a failure, the 2008 GNU failed to deliver even one reform and last year's coup was a wasted opportunity there is a real danger of the nation making the same foolish mistake again.
Whatever democratic pretensions President Mnangagwa had a year ago have all long since washed off like mud war-paint off a Topi bull. He promised to hold free, fair and credible, that has proven a bridge too far. After 37 years of rigging elections to keep Mugabe and Zanu PF in power there was no way Zanu PF was ever going to give up its dictatorial powers to rig the elections.
ReplyDeleteMnangagwa pulled all the stops to make sure the elections were as peaceful as possible in the hope the world will ignore his more subtle vote rigging moves. It was impossible to ignore such blatant moves as the failure to produce a verified voters’ roll and the verdict is out: Zanu PF rigged the elections.
So, all the talk of the new dispensation was cheap make-up and it now it has completely wash off; the real and vote rigging Zanu PF is ruling the roost.
With the democrat mask off we should not be surprise Mnangagwa is now going for emergency power, the full hog dictatorial powers. Last November’s coup did not change the Zanu PF dictatorship is any way other than replacing Mugabe with another dictator, Mnangagwa.
38 years of incompetent, corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF rule has dragged the nation from one of the top five richest nation in Africa to the poorest country on the continent. We used to hold the proud record of being the bread basket of the region and now the nation cannot grow enough to feed its own people let alone have surplus for export. We are starving in a land which is for all intent and purposes is the Garden of Eden! A damning testimonial to Zanu PF corruption and incompetence.
ReplyDeleteWhat is worse, Zimbabwe’s economic woes are set to get worse as long as the nation remains under this corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF rule.
“(Economic) recovery can only come with foreign investment in Zimbabwean commerce and industry. But what investor would want to bring hard currency onshore, to see its value immediately reduced as it is turned into RTGS money, where profits are generated in RTGS money and offshore shareholders cannot be paid?” explained Derek Matyszak in an article in Zimeye.
“So the logjam continues. The currency problem cannot be solved without investment, and investment won’t come until the currency problem is solved and certainly not while Zimbabwe has shown itself prone to bouts of extreme economic chaos and potential social unrest. And while government scratches its collective head, Zimbabwe’s economy inches ever closer to the brink.”
I agree, Zimbabwe is right on the edge on economic chaos and social unrest, Zanu PF has dragged this nation into hell-on-earth and yet Mnangagwa still insist he is delivering the nation into the Promised Land flowing with milk and honey!
Mnangagwa has dragged the nation back into the dark ages with his tyrannical autocracy. He still maintains he alone knows what is best for the country regardless of the mountain of evidence of Zanu PF failure and the tragic consequences thereof.
Zimbabwe must move with the times, the days of absolute rulers riding roughshod over serfs are over. We want every Zimbabwean to be free and have a meaningful say in the governance of the country. We want free, fair and credible elections and let it be said here and now and loudly that those who rig elections will NOT be allowed to get away with it!
