"There is no water, don't pay your bills," argue Chiwenga - certain to make things worse P Guramatunhu

"There is no water, council has failed to collect refuse and there is no sewer reticulation, but daily, they come knocking on your doors demanding payment for things they have failed to deliver. That must stop forthwith," VP Chiwenga said.

This speaks volume of what kind of leader VP Chiwenga is: he has clearly accepted that people can live without clean running water, no sewage system and with mountains of rubbish everywhere, in this day and age.

What is called for here is a situation where even those who are failing to pay their bills should never have their water supply cut off because this is an essential commodity. No one should ever be forced to live with no clean running water in this day and age. VP Chiwenga’s advice that people stop paying their council bills is a vote buying gimmick which will only lead to even the existing very poor services disappearing altogether.

This idiotic mentality by VP Chiwenga can be extending to central government where Zanu PF has ruled uninterrupted for the last 38 years. VP has clearly accepted the reality of unemployment soaring to 90%, to ¾ of the population living on US$1.00 or less a day, to education and health services that has all but collapsed, etc., etc.

We are in this economic mess because for the last 38 years the nation has been ruled by a gang of corrupt, incompetent and murderous thugs who do not have even a shred of common sense. The nation has been stuck with this Zanu PF dictatorship only because the thugs have rigged elections to stay in power.

In the 38 years, the nation has had many opportunities to end the Zanu PF dictatorship but has wasted them all. The best opportunity, by a long mile, fall to Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends during the 2008 to 2013 GNU; all they had to do was to implement the raft democratic reforms SADC had already forced Mugabe and Zanu PF to agree to.

Sadly, as soon as Tsvangirai et al tasted power they, just like Mugabe and his cronies before them, they became the proverbial cockroach who gorged himself in the milk and forgot to carry out the task he was asked. MDC leaders failed to implement even one reform in five years. Not even one!

Nations get the government they deserve, and we certainly deserve this corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship complete with multitude of corrupt and incompetent opposition parties. Instead of paying meticulous attention in the election of leaders we have been contend with the brain dead. If you are contended with brain dead VP Chiwenga then you will have no clean running water, live on US$ 1.00 a day, etc.

In four weeks-time the people of Zimbabwe will be supposedly electing a new government. I say, supposedly, because they are just going through the motion to confirm the pre-determined result – another landslide victory for the vote rigging Zanu PF. With not even one democratic reform in place it is clear that Zanu PF will blatantly rig these elections as it has always done.

It is very disappointing that it has been outsiders, the Americans, AU, etc., who have been demanding free, fair and credible elections and not the Zimbabweans themselves. Most Zimbabweans are locked up in their own cloud-cuckoo-land; they are cocksure that this time they will win the rigged elections.

Those holding public office are there to service the commonwealth and not their selfish interests. By encouraging the people to stop paying their council bills VP Chiwenga is going to destroy the already very poor water supply, refuse collection, etc. there is. How can having no clean running, etc. be in the public interest? But until we clean-up our political system to ensure free, fair and credible elections, we will be stuck with brain dead leaders like V P Chiwenga.

These elections are not free, fair and credible because no meaningful reforms were implemented before the elections. These elections must be declared null and void!

  1. There is a lot more to rigging elections than printing of the ballot and whereabout each candidate's name appears. What is dosappointing here is that MDC have ignore many, many other key issues the nation should be concerned with - proof MDC leaders are blundering around.

These elections should have never been allowed to go ahead without the key reforms. They should be declared null and void!

  2. @ Fogmaster

Zanu PF is rigging these elections by making sure there is no free public media. ZEC has failed to register all the targetted 7 million because BVR was started late. ZEC has also failed to produce a clean and verified voters' roll throwing the door wide open to all manner of vote rigging. Zanu PF has billions of dollars looted from the nation to bankroll its vote rigging schemes, etc.

If you cannot see that Zanu PF is rigging these elections it is only because you refuse to see it.

  3. How many times has MDC been told that these elections will not be free and fair, not without implementing the reforms first? It is pure nonsensical to be complaining of ZEC failures, etc. now when you have been warned this would happen.

It is none other than MDC leaders who have helped Zanu PF rig the elections and get away with it because all Chamisa et al care about is the few gravy train seats Zanu PF gives away as bait!

  4. The British campaigning organisation Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) has expressed fears that the outcome of the July elections are a foregone conclusion. ACTSA, formerly the Anti-Apartheid Movement, speaks of suspicion that what it calls the Zanu PF / military alliance will not allow Emmerson Mnangagwa to lose his first election.

After the blatant vote rigging and wanton violence in 2008 it was clear there was nothing Zanu PF would not do to win the elections. SADC leaders advised that the 2013 elections should be postponed till the reforms are in place. "If you go into next month's elections, you will lose; the elections are done!" they warned MDC leaders.

As we all know Zanu PF went on to blatantly rigged the 2013 elections. Since then, not even one reform has been implemented. Of course, Zanu PF is rigging these elections.

  5. MDC leaders have been warned 100 000 times and 100 000 times again that with no reforms, Zanu PF will rig the elections. Chamisa et al have refused to listen because they have been after the few gravy train seats Zanu PF gives away as bait. With 130 other political parties, to say nothing of independent candidates, MDC leaders must now be worried sick that even the scraps would be hard to get this time. MDC leaders are now looking for an excuse for boycotting the elections, something they have pointedly refused to do until now!

MDC leader are breathtakingly corrupt and incompetent, they sold-out big time during the GNU when they failed to get even one reform implemented in five years. They have lost all political credibility. Whether they all resign on mass or stay in the rat race to be bitter end it is now irrelevant.

What should be of paramount importance to the people of Zimbabwe is that these elections must be declared null and void. We need to revisit the raft of reforms agreed in 2008 and make sure they are all implemented this time.

  6. VP Chiwenga is picking on the urban council controlled by the opposition when the rural councils controlled by Zanu PF have not done any better. Instead of him being concerned that so many Zimbabweans are without something as basic as clean running water he is thinking of getting a few brownie points by suggesting a solution that will make the bad situation even worse. The real headache here is that unless we do something to ensure we have free, fair and credible elections the nation will be stuck with the likes of Mnangagwa, Chiwenga, etc. for decades to come.

Zanu PF wanted to impose a de jure one-party state in the late 1980s but failed. The regime has settled for the de facto one-party dictatorship were it has amasses for itself carte blanche powers to rig the elections. But the have fact the the regime has been obliged to hold frequent elections has given the nation a chance to try to get change.

Our failure, especially by the country's opposition MDC leaders, to appreciate the importance for ensuring the elections were free, fair and credible has left Zanu PF at a clear advantage. Allowing Zanu PF to keep its carte blanche powers to rig the elections is like a human being agreeing to wrestle a crocodile (it being a nickname of President Mnangagwa only helps to underline the mismatch) in deep fast flowing flooded muddy water.

It is the ordinary Zimbabweans who have been slow in realising the futility of contesting flawed and illegal elections because they get nothing out of it. Zanu PF has been careful to allow MDC leaders win a few gravy train seats and it is this bait the opposition are after.

  7. Zanu PF showed the world what it is capable of when it comes to rigging elections in 2008. In the March vote it forced a recount which took six weeks and managed to whittle down Tsvangirai's 73% down to 47% to force the run-off.

Mai Mujuru had her "Operation Bhora Musango" (Operation kick the ball into the bush" in which her supporters were instructed to vote for a Zanu PF parliamentary candidate but vote for Tsvangirai instead of the Zanu PF presidential candidate, Mugabe. The six weeks long recount nullified Bhora Musango. Mugabe complained bitterly about Bhora Musango confirming it had happened and it was one of the reasons why Mai Mujuru was booted out of Zanu PF in 2014.

The wanton violence that followed the run-off in 2008 left no one in any doubt that this was an exercise in barbarism.

For any Zimbabwean, much less a senior Zanu PF leader like Mai Mujuru, to even doubt that Zanu PF has been rigging elections is proof of an infantile intellect. There are many, many things Mai Mujuru witnessed with her own eyes or could have easily found out, Zanu PF vote rigging is one of them, but it is pointless asking her about because they went over her head.

One does not need to be a rocket scientist to know that ZEC was cooking up the vote count during the six weeks recount. The wanton violence during the run-off was widespread it was in newspapers, radio and TV. Millions of dollars of property was destroyed. Millions of people were harassed, beaten, raped and over 500 were murdered. If it was not to force the people to vote for Mugabe, then she should tell us what she thought it was all for!

For Mai Mujuru to even be doubting that Zanu PF has been rigging elections only goes to show just how narrow, thick and slow she is! It is no surprising that when she was a victim of Zanu PF thuggery herself, she was dumfounded. She should have seen it coming but, clearly, she did not. Do not bother asking her what happened, she still has no clue what happened, bless her!
