Zimbabweans must stop blaming SADC for rigged elections and, at long last, own up to our own foolishness. W Mukori

“Zimbabwe is one of those countries that has benefited immensely from this "see no evil, hear no evil and say no evil" policy maintained by SADC,” argued Tendai Mbofana in his recent article in Bulawayo 24.

“That is why, in spite of a damning election observer mission report by SADC itself on the August 2023 harmonised elections, the regional body did not take any stern action or even strongly condemn Zimbabwe.

“The heads of State preferred to pretend as if all was well in Zimbabwe. As it turns out, the country is even taking over the SADC chair in August this year.”

There was much more to why SADC let Mnangagwa off the hook after the rigged 2023 elections than the “see no evil, hear no evil and say no evil” policy.

After Zanu PF blatantly rigged the 2008 Zimbabwe elections, SADC did deny Zanu PF political legitimacy and forced the regime to agree to the 2008 Global Political Agreement and the 2008 to 2013 GNU.

There are four reasons why SADC did not repeat the 2008 punishment and deny Zanu PF legitimacy regardless of the damning 2023 election reports from both AU and SADC;

  1. 1) millions of Zimbabweans participated in the flawed elections knowing fully well the process was flawed and participating would give Zanu PF legitimacy; they soldiered on regardless because they believed Chamisa’s lies of plugging all the vote rigging loop holes.

  1. 2) The winning CCC leaders took up their gravy seats even after SADC and AU had condemned the election process. They insisted the won seats were in liberated zones where elections were free and fair and not the gravy train seats given out by Zanu PF as bait. All nonsense.

ZEC’s failure to produce a verified voters’ roll, for example, affected all constituencies. Chamisa and company participated in the flawed elections out of greed and the claim of liberated zones is just a smoke screen to hide the real reason they were hell bent on participating - greed.

  1. 3) As soon as the election results were out, before SADC leaders had had any chance to digest the results much less what to do about Zanu PF rigging the elections, CCC leaders started fighting amongst themselves over few gravy train seats the party had won. Self designated CCC Secretary General, Sengezo Tshabangu, started recalling elected officials.  CCC imploded!

  1. 4) There are some SADC leaders, notably SA’s ANC, who would back a vote rigging Zanu PF rather than see regime change in Zimbabwe. The three reasons above provided the excuse for the do-nothing camp in the regional body to prevail.

There are reports that some people are planning to hold protest demonstrations during the forthcoming SADC Summit in Harare in August 2024. What is it exactly these people be protesting against?

Some people say they will be protesting against SADC leaders for failing to deny Zanu PF legitimacy after SADC election observers condemned the 2023 elections. And for rewarding the vote rigging Mnangagwa with the chairmanship of the regional grouping. True, but - it is a big but!

But these protestors are forgetting that it was SADC leaders who created the golden opportunity for Zimbabweans to implement the democratic reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU. MDC/CCC leaders sold out big time not only by failed to implement even one token reform but have been participating in flawed elections out of greed.

And we, the Zimbabwean public have played our part in this tragic political and economic crisis that has befallen our country by doing very little to hold both vote rigging Zanu PF and sell out MDC/CCC to account.

Zimbabwe is a failed state, stuck in a rut. 44 years after independence, we are still failing to hold free, fair and credible elections! One of the reasons why we are stuck is our repeated failure to define and understand our problems and hence the reason why we are always blundering from pillar to post. We have no clue where we are going.

Zimbabweans are protesting against SADC for doing nothing to punish Zanu PF for the rigged 2023 elections and yet they have said nothing about Chamisa and company who participated out of greed and about their folly in being easily conned to participate. We really have no clue what is going on, SADC are NOT responsible for our failure to hold free, fair and credible elections. We are! By blaming SADC for our own folly, new are showing the world that we are not yet ready to be masters of our own destiny.

"We want SADC to deny ED SADC chairmanship because he has failed the SADC democratic system test. How can they bestow him with leadership to promote democratic principles in the region. That’s the only punishment we want them to give at this stage and it starts from there. Then ZANU will not feel emboldened in their usual ways of retaining power.

Participation in a flawed system does not launder fraud."

If SADC was going to do something then it would be better to deny ED political legitimacy as happened in 2008. They did not for the reasons given above. To deny him the chairmanship of SADC, a merely ceremonial post, is being penny wise and pound foolish, to say the least.

Mnangagwa's sabre rattling antics in Russia is typical of dictators seeking to draw attention away from the failures comparable to the antic of the Argentina's Junta in 1982 resulting in the Falkland Island war. Mnangagwa is failing to deliver economic recover, Vision 2030 is a mirage, and the illegitimacy of rigged 2023 elections hangs over his head like the sword of Damocles. He will do anything to remain in power we must not allow him to drag us into economic hell or worse!

  3. Mnangagwa is a failed buffoon who is desperate to stay in power by hook and by crook including rigging elections. He has never forgiven Dr Nievers Mumba for daring to condemn Zimbabwe's 2023 elections flawed and illegal. We, in Zimbabwe, must be careful we do not allow the buffoon, in his desperation, drag the nation even deeper into this economic hell or even worse into a military conflict with our neighbours!

“Let’s support change in our country by giving true total support to our youthful wise leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa.”

The trouble with some people is that they do not have common sense to see even the blatantly obvious much less admit it even when their big noses are rub hard it the s***t.

Chamisa and company have not only failed to implement even one token reform in 24 years to stop Zanu PF rigging elections but have been participating in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy all out of greed. Chamisa lied about plugging all the vote rigging loop holes last year to conn the ignorant and gullible into participating in the flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy and to hide CCC’s leaders greed.

All the nation ever got from Chamisa and company’s betrayal is perpetuating the dictatorship and the nation’s suffering. How anyone can still call Chamisa a wise leader, even now with the benefit of hindsight, beggars belief!

We really have some really dumb and stupid people in Zimbabwe. And to add insult to injury, the idiots have loud voices and the vote. No wonder we are a failed state!

"SADC condemned Zimbabwe's 2023 elections and the regional body must not this condone Zanu PF government" argues Chamisa.

Coming from anyone else it makes sense but coming from Chamisa it is childish and nauseatingly foolish! If was none other than Chamisa and company who participated in the flawed elections and took up they few bait gravy train seats out of greed who gave Zanu PF political legitimacy. And now the dimwits are blaming SADC for their folly and insatiable greed!

What will SADC accomplish revisiting the disputed August 2023 elections?

Zimbabweans would be better advised focusing on implementing reforms to ensure 2028 elections are free, fair and credible!

“To support Chamisa for the sake of change should be views from the perspective of direction because you should understand that change in the wrong direction is not supportable. While change is a natural and necessary part of growth and progress in the country, but change in the name of Chamisa only should be understood as harmful and detrimental because of his stance as an opposition leader who crafted and legitimatized sanctions to harm fellow citizens.”

Chamisa is corrupt and breathtakingly incompetent and his failure to get even one token reform implemented in 24 years including the 5 in the GNU is top on his list of failures. To blame him for sanctions is foolish, to say the least. Do you really believe that the west would rely on some one like him to determine their foreign policy?

It is laughable that the same Zanu PF apologists who call Chamisa a puppet of the west have again and again done a volte-face accusing Chamisa of instigating the sanctions. So now it is the puppet pulling the strings and controlling the puppeteer! Only Zanu PF idiots would not see the contradiction.

So you think Chamisa has unsettled Zanu PF by failing to implement even one reform in 24 years and in participating in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy.

Others like Biti, Ncube, Mwonzora, Muzorewa, Sithole, etc. have all participated in elections; do they all have balls too or is it only Chamisa?

What is it exactly that Chamisa has accomplished?

  10. According to a nurse at Mpilo Hospital who spoke anonymously, cancer patients often have to sleep on the floor due to bed shortages. Moreover, patients with kidney failure are frequently neglected, unable to access essential dialysis kits promptly, and sometimes pass away during the night as a result. The hospital also lacks basic supplies like X-Ray films, with results shown directly on machines to patients who are often bedridden.

Dr. Narcissus Dzvanga, Mpilo's chief medical officer, was unreachable for comment amid these revelations.

If a big referral hospital like Mpilo is failing to provide something as basic as a bed how much worse off are the provincial and district hospitals! And yet Mnangagwa still insist the country is on course to be an upper middle income nation by 2030, vision 2030. Vision 2030 is nothing more than a ritual lump of sugar given to sheep, the millions now living in abject poverty, before slaughter!

Ever since MDC leaders sold out by failing to implement even one token reform during the 2008 to 2013 GNU, MDC/CCC leaders have participated in the flawed elections knowing fully well that doing so would give legitimacy to vote rigging Zanu PF. They have soldiered on and participated regardless out of greed.

Chamisa and company lied to people, claiming CCC would win big because they had plugged all the vote rigging loop holes just to con the ignorant and naive voters into participating. Millions did participate.

The foolish thing is there are some Zimbabweans who are blaming SADC for the regional body's failure to deny Zanu PF legitimacy for rigging the 2023 elections.Of course, the accusation is foolish since it was CCC and the millions of Zimbabweans who participate who GAVE Zanu PF legitimacy.

Worst of all, blaming SADC is not going to help Chamisa and company participating in 2028 elections and thus give Zanu PF legitimacy yet again and perpetuate the people's suffering. We really need to end the insanity of participating in flawed elections to perpetuate our own suffering!

This is criminal waste of public resources! What makes this wholesale looting even more worrying is that the looters are using some of their ill gotten wealth to bankroll Zanu PF's vote rigging juggernaut - bribing key election officials including the US$ 400k for judges and bribing the opposition to participate in these elections no matter how flawed and illegal the process gets!

“In fact, Mnangagwa's disingenuous claims that Zambian and Zimbabwe were once one country was a mischievous attempt at drawing parallels to Russian's own relationship with neighboring Ukraine.

Historically, Ukraine was part of Russia - until the break up of the Soviet Union in December 1991.

We all know that, one of the main factors behind the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and the March 2014 annexation of Crimea, were largely motivated by Russia's determination to bring these territories back under its rule.

So, was Mnangagwa expecting to entice Putin into militarily supporting Zimbabwe under the misguided belief that Zambia was another Ukraine?

Let us also remember that the straw that eventually broke Russia's back was the overt supporting of Ukraine by Western powers, particularly the US, with a sympathetic government installed in power in Kyiv.

Mnangagwa was playing a very dangerous game in stocking conflict with Zambia with the aid of Russia by drawing similarities between the two scenarios.

Thus, Mnangagwa's efforts in showing that the same was happening in Zambia - as the US 'consolidated its power' through the Hakainde Hichilema administration.

This was an extension of the two-decade-old ZANU PF narrative that the West was intent on 'illegal regime change' in Zimbabwe, more so after the land reform program of the early 2000s.”

The truth is that Zanu PF has never ever held free, fair and credible elections in Zimbabwe. Never ever! In 1980 Zanu PF threatened the nation with “the bush war will continue if we do not win the elections.” The people voted to end the war.

Some people dismissed the bush war threat as an empty threat, they were left in no doubt the party meant every word when the regime launched the 1983 to 1987 Gukurahundi massacre. The primary purpose of the massacre was to force PF Zapu, Zanu PF’s main political challenger, to abandon its independence and, indeed, the killing stopped with the signing of the unity accord paving the way for the formation of the de facto one party dictatorship that has ruled Zimbabwe to this day.

The business of rigging elections have become increasing unpopular and difficult as Mnangagwa learned in last year’s Zimbabwe elections. Dr Nevers Mumba, the Zambian national who chaired the SADC Election Observer Mission boldly condemned Zimbabwe’s 2023 elections as flawed and illegal. Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF thugs were vexed by the criticism and it is not surprising the regime is itching for a fight.

Mnangagwa see natural allies in Russia and China, the two nations do not hold free, fair and credible elections and so see nothing wrong with Zanu PF rigging elections. Indeed the two nations have played pivotal roles in helping Zanu PF rig elections these last 44 years and they they are major players in the wholesale looting of Zimbabwe’s wealth.

Of course, Russia and China will help Mnangagwa’s bid to stay in power. Our nightmare of ending the double curse of rigged elections and bad governance is far from over.

Reason has prevailed over foolishness, pragmatism has prevailed over dogmatism! ANC has elected DA as their coalition partner instead of Malema's EFF and Zuma's MK. South Africa was well on her way to become just another African failed state after 30 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption under successive ANC administrations. SA was looking down into the abyss.

DA will bring the good governance ANC has lacked and thus help the country's economic recovery. Malema and Zuma would have contributed to the economic rot.

  18. The Zimbabwean government has stated it will not issue title deeds for unserviced stands, including those in Epworth where President Emmerson Mnangagwa had promised to distribute them ahead of the August 2023 elections.

Although Mnangagwa pledged to provide over 11,000 title deeds and handed out 265 securitized title deeds in Epworth before the elections, the project appears to have stalled post-election, with only a few deeds given to individuals with close ties to the ruling Zanu-PF party.

Zanu PF is denying the ordinary people the right to own land, the one thing most people will ever own of value, for selfish political reasons - to hold the people beholden to the party for the purposes of controlling them. The regime has denied millions of ordinary Zimbabweans the right to a meaningful say in the governance of the countyry for the same selfish reason.

It is for the ordinary Zimbabweans to demand the title deeds as welkl as the meaningful vote. Why the people have allowed Zanu PF to ride roughshod over them these last 44 years beggars belief. Nation often get the government they deserve and we, in Zimbabwe, certaily deserve this corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship complete with its corrupt and utterly useless MDC/CCC opposition.

  19. Zimbabwe was recently identified as Africa's most expensive country according to a comprehensive study by the African Development Bank (AfDB). The study assessed power purchasing parities (PPPs) and exchange rates across African nations.

Zimbabwe, which until recently grappled with hyperinflation, transitioned into deflation following currency adjustments in April. The reintroduction of the Zimbabwe dollar (ZWL) in 2019 replaced a decade-long dollarization period but quickly depreciated due to excessive money supply. This depreciation significantly impacted the country's PPP.

According to AfDB, Zimbabwe topped the continent's price levels, followed by Cabo Verde, Djibouti, Seychelles, and South Africa. Conversely, Sudan, Egypt, Angola, and Ethiopia recorded the lowest price levels. The Price Level Index (PLI) provided by AfDB compares each country's overall price levels relative to Africa's average, with a PLI greater than one indicating higher prices compared to the region's average.

Official statistics revealed that surviving in Zimbabwe required approximately ZiG624.44 per month, equivalent to US$46.39, a figure widely contested in the market. Concerns raised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank regarding data collection practices at the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency underscored the need for transparency.

I am not at all surprise that collecting data on Zimbabwe has become notorious difficult. Zimbabwe, jus like North Korea, is obsessed about appearances; Zanu PF is determined to to maintain the country is enjoying economic recovery well on her way to become an upper middle income nation by 2030. Vision 2030. The regime is spending a fortune on PR and spin doctors to falsify the reality and promote the imaginary vision 2030.

Zanu PF knows that it can keep a lid on the reality as long as the regime remains in power and hence the reason no expense are spared to rig the election and make sure Zanu PF remains in power. Mnangagwa squandered US$5 billion plus in bribes from buying chicken and chips for the hired crowd attending the rallies, new twin cab trucks for all the chiefs right up to US$ 400k and 500k in housing loan paid to all the judges and ministers respectively.

Zimbabwe is a failed state. It is impossible to hide the reality of the collapsed health and education service, the near permanent load shedding and no running water, the pot holes in the roads and the millions now living in abject poverty. Vision 2030 is a mirage by moonlight!

The National Youth League (NYL), the vanguard of the Revolutionary Party, has come out guns blazing after damning evidence of Chivhayo's low regard for the Head of State, and his equally infuriating press statement to 'exonerate' himself.

Of course, Chivhayo is running rings round Mnangagwa and his apologists, they all have no clue what what to do. One minute the regime is defending him as one of their own and the next minute they are attacking him. And he is not the only one who has the regime by the balls!

In last year’s Al Jazeera Gold Mafia documentary, there was no doubt it was Ebert Angel and his colleagues who were calling the shots and not Mnangagwa and his fellow Zanu PF godfathers. Indeed, VP Chiwenga was contemptuously dismissed as a dunderhead!

Zimbabwe has the great misfortune of having buffoons for national leaders. The only reason why the buffoons are still in power after 44 years since independence is they rig elections or be it with the assistance of the corrupt and utterly useless MDC/CCC leaders, who have failed to implement even one token reform in 24 years, including 5 in the GNU.

Zanu PF has been blatantly rigging elections because not even one token democratic reform was implemented these last 24 years including the 5 in the GNU. MDC/CCC were elected for the primary purpose of implementing the democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. It beggars belief that any one should still trust Chamisa and company to implement reforms.

There are three ways to stop Zanu PF rigging elections:

    1) Expect Zanu PF to implement the reforms - Zanu PF will never ever reform itself out of office. Never ever!

    2) Elect opposition who will implement the reforms. MDC/CCC leaders had the opportunity to implement the reforms these last 24 years including the 5 in the GNU. They have not only failed to implement even one token reform but have been participating in flawed elections top give Zanu PFD legitimacy. Just because Chamisa and company sold out does not mean no one else can implement the reforms.

    3) Third option is use of violence, street protests, another coup or worst; to end the Zanu PF dictatorship.
