"Zim hospitals overwhelmed by covid-19" - overwhelmed by 225 patients or official figures are fake W Mukori

Let me say this for the umpteenth time: Zimbabwe’s official corona virus cases and deaths is but a fraction of the real and true figures.

Officially Zimbabwe has 13 867 cumulated cases of which 2 254 are active cases and 363 deaths. There have been 719 new cases and 9 deaths in the last three days showing the number of cases are on the increase.

"We hear UK beds are overwhelmed by Covid-19. Well, that's them. They say in SA, hospital admission thresholds are now quite high- that's them. But, let me tell you about our own situation, don't catch the virus if you can avoid it. We are being overwhelmed and overrun by this virus.” commented Nick Mangwana on twitter.

Mangwana is the government spokesman and also the source of the official data on corona virus cases and deaths.

”We really are in it!”

“Those who doubt should call any hospital including private ones and hear what they will be told. Our capacity to admit other patients is extremely diminished.”

There is very strange coming from some one authorised to give the definitive corona virus cases and deaths across the land. So he is himself doubting the official figures he has been dishing out!

Indeed, any one with half a brain has cause to doubt the official figures. If there are only 2 254 active cases and 10% of them, at most, would require hospitalisation. Why would a country of 16 million be running out of hospital beds after admitting only 225 corona virus patients, particularly when the country has had over a year to prepare to treat tens of thousands and, so far, had not happened?

One way Zimbabwe has failed to keep track of the true corona virus figures is because the country has not been testing, tracing and tracking as per World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation and as common sense would dictate.

Last month there were many reported cases of corona virus cases at a number of school including Dadaya High School, in Zvishavane. The ration thing to do was to test all 1 000 or so students and staff. There was only enough test kits for 47 tests per day!

Even now with the number of corona virus surging up, Zimbabwe’s test regime continues to remain wilfully inadequate. Yesterday the nation carried out 1 677 PCR test in total country wide!

No doubt many students went back home without ever being tests and all those who had the virus but not the symptoms continue spreading it to the rest of the community.

So by failing to carryout a US$2 test the nation could end put after one month with 100 corona virus cases traceable to just one individual and 10 of whom will require hospital treatment costing US$ 100 each, at least and 1 out of the 100 will die!

How many people in Zimbabwe today have corona virus and would be in isolation if the country was carrying out a more rigorous testing, tracking and tracing regime? And we are not going this to save US$2! What a criminal waste of human lives!

The official Zimbabwe covid 19 cases and deaths would suggest the country has done exceptionally in containing the pandemic but this will be overshadowed if was so because we falsified the figures. The matter will be much worse if in falsifying the figures we ending up putting more Zimbabweans at risk of getting the virus and many dying.

Thank God there are now a number of corona virus vaccines available. Still, as a third world country that will rely on the generosity of others to get the vaccine, it will not be for another year before a significant number of Zimbabweans get the jab.

Meanwhile, we must do something to end the blundering incompetence shown by this Zanu PF regime in the handling of the pandemic. There is no excuse why Zimbabwe has not increased the number of tests consider it is our only line of defence since our health care has all but collapsed.

I hope some day the country will carryout a thorough inquiry to uncover the truth on how Zimbabwe handled the corona virus pandemic. The true figure of how many people had the virus and how many died will never be known for certain still it will be useful to have more realistic figures than the official figures that even those complying them are dismissing with contempt!

  1. If there are only 2 254 active corona virus cases in Zimbabwe and 10% at most require hospitalisation then there are 225 covid-19 patients in Zimbabwe. How can the hospitals be overwhelmed by 225 patients when big hospitals like Mpilo are supposed to have capacity to take twice that figure alone!

The only logical explanation is the true figure of active cases in Zimbabwe are a lot higher than the official figure. Zimbabwe's official corona virus caese and deaths are a fabrication, fake!

“Doctors informed me that all Covid-19 hospital units are full. Citizens are now dying without getting access to hospitalisation. Be vigilant follow Covid-19 precautions at all times:mask up, wash hands!

“We are losing relatives, friends and members of our communities to this deadly pandemic. We cannot afford to be as complacent as we have been in recent months. Our communities are paying the price. We must change our conduct if we are to beat this pandemic.”

According to the official figures, Zimbabwe has only 2 254 active corona virus cases and most of these would be in isolation and do not need hospitalisation. If we assume 10% require hospital treatment then why are our hospitals full when they have only 225 or so covid-19 patients? This only points to one thing - the official figures are wrong!

Ever since the out break of this corona virus, this Zanu PF regime has deliberately misinformed the nation on the spread of the virus for the purpose of hiding its blundering incompetence. The price of under testing was that hundreds of thousands of people with the virus have remained in society spreading the virus when they should have been in isolation.

The MDC, as the country’s main opposition party, has failed the nation; the party has never once taken Zanu PF to task on its blundering incompetence in the handling of the pandemic.

“Doctors informed me that all Covid-19 hospital units are full!” Yeah right! So you think hospitals are full with only the official 225 or so patients? How foolish and gullible can you be and to think you are the one holding Zanu PF to account!

  3. “As the (ZNLWVA) we are happy about the stewardship of this economy by our president. We stood by him in elections and we will continue standing by him, he is doing a fantastic job in managing the finances of this country and the introduction of Pfumvudza farming is great progress to boost agricultural production, which guarantees food self-sufficiency and commercialise smallholder agriculture,” Mutsvangwa said.

“If we look back to 1980, we wanted political history, in 2000 we wanted political history by recovering our land and its resources, what was left was our financial victory.

“From that time, the country suffered from wayward financial management, everyone remembers the hyperinflation of the first republic, especially in 2008 when the whole population lost its historic service,” Mutsvangwa said.

If the 500 billion percent hyperinflation of 2008 is the benchmark, then Mnangagwa has, so far at least, achieved financial victory since inflation is only 848%! This was achieved by starving key sectors like education and health of funding.

Only a buffoon like Mutsvangwa would argue the country was going in the right directions when millions of are people now live in abject poverty and basic services such as education and health care have collapsed.

Of course, Mutsvangwa is behind Mnangagwa, he counts himself one of the Zanu PF ruling elite. As for the majority of ZNLWVA members their lives are as grime and desolate as the majority of ordinary Zimbabweans, they have been brainwashed into believing Zanu PF will, one day soon, make them as rich as the ruling elite. They have awaited for the day for the last 40 years!

The number one priority for all thinking Zimbabweans out there is to make sure the 2023 elections are free, fair and credible; this is our ticket to good governance. If Zanu PF fail to implement the reforms to make this so, then the elections must be declared null and void, a prelude implementing the reform and holding free and fair elections.

2023 must go down in Zimbabwe history as the year ordinary Zimbabweans reclaimed their freedoms, rights, human dignity and pride.

  4. Nathan Shamuyarira was the man Mugabe credited with building Zimbabwe's public media into the propaganda and brainwashing monolithic monster, there to serve Zanu PF at the expense of the nation, it remained these 40 years. Shamuyarira died a pauper, his wife could not even be at his deathbed because she "could not afford taxi back home" she said at his funeral.

Mugabe used Shamuyarira to help build the dictatorship and discarded him like used toilet paper just as he did with thousands of others.

Admittedly the Zanu PF dictatorship is wasteful of both human and material resources and as the nation's wealth shrunk even Zanu PF grandees like Shamuyarira were not spared the ravishes of growing mass poverty. The real surprise is even to this day with all the mountain of evidence that the Zanu PF dictatorship is doomed to fail, there are still many village idiots hoping against hope that they too will have a mansion, a fleet of posh cars and live in luxury ever after!

  5. Said Moyo, "Sir, you need to scrap your holiday and return to work urgently to save lives and livelihoods. The #coronavirus is sweeping across the country, leaving people helpless; as they see loved ones dying or failing to get treatment, as #Covid-19 cases spike!”

This is just wishful thinking! The corona virus pandemic has not flared up overnight the minute Mnangagwa was away! The corona virus chickens are coming home to roost after a year of blundering incompetence and lying about the spreading virus.

On paper, Zimbabwe has 2 254 active corona virus cases in the whole country. If 10% of the cases require hospital treatment why are the hospital full with only 225 covid-19 patients. The truth is Zanu PF has been lying about the corona virus cases and deaths in the country. And Mnangagwa has presiding over these lies, he was not on holiday!

What would recalling him back from holiday change? Zimbabwe will still have hospitals overrun with covid-19 sick, a consequence of a year of pretending the country had contain the pandemic when it was spreading like wild fire!

  6. Added Mangwana, "It's convenient to believe that the current coronavirus rate of infection is related to the Christmas movement from SA. But the honest truth is that, out of 459 cases recorded in 48 hours, only one is imported from SA. The rest are local transmission. The disease is in our midst."

Just surprised that Mangwana is repeating the same government corona virus figures which he knows are false. If Zimbabwe has only 2 254 active corona virus cases and, say 10% require hospital treatment then the country's hospitals cannot be overwhelmed by 225 covid-19 patients.

The corona virus cases and deaths figures Zanu PF has been reporting since the pandemic outbreak nearly a year ago have been lies and damned lies designed to give the false impression the regime was in total control of the pandemic to hide its blundering incompetence in dealing with the virus. The truth is now coming out and the nation is overwhelmed!

Drawing parallels between Khupe and Trump.

When the MDC leaders failed to implement even one democratic reform in five years of the GNU, they proved beyond all reasonable doubt that they are corrupt and incompetent. The Zimbabwean voters should have deserted MDC in droves and never to have anything to do with the sell-outs.

The very fact that there are many Zimbabweans out there who continue to follow any of these MDC scandals speaks volumes about the Zimbabwe electorate.

It was 2004 to 2007 USA ambassador to Zimbabwe Chris Dell who said Tsvangirai “was a flawed and indecisive character who will be an albatross round the nation’s neck if he ever got into power”. The GNU proved the ambassador was right. Indeed, he should have said the same thing about the rest of the MDC leaders.

Nation that, ignores the historic evidence and continue following blindly corrupt and incompetent leaders deserves to suffer the consequences of bad governance. Zimbabwe is not getting out of this hell-on-earth Zanu PF landed us in and MDC is holding us captive until we take the task of electing competent leaders with the seriousness and urgency the matter demands!

Thokozani Khupe, like the rest of the MDC leaders, have proven that they are corrupt and incompetent when Mugabe bribed them during the 2008 and 2013 GNU and the forgot about the reforms. It is on her record and that alone that she is judged.

You want her judge as a competent leader praised to the high heaven for no other reason than that she is a woman and from Matabeleland! No wonder the country is in a real mess!

Has it ever occurred to you that Nomazulu, from the comfort of Germany, is engage with what is happening in Zimbabwe because she cares about the suffering of the millions of ordinary Zimbabweans. The true figure of how many people had the virus and how many died will never be known for certain still it will be useful to have more realistic figures than the official figures that even those complying them are dismissing with contempt.”

It will come as no surprise that Zanu PF’s blundering incompetence in the handling of the corona virus has resulted in a hell lot more people catching the virus and many of them dying of the virus. The country is in this economic and political mess because of 40 years of Zanu PF blundering incompetence.

People should have become alarmed and suspicious of Zimbabwe’s official corona virus figures particularly when the figures portrayed Zanu PF as one of the most competent regimes ever! A leopard does not change its spots so readily nor does a corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF regime.

Zimbabwe’s health care is in such a sorry state, it is not geared to handle any normal health care challenges much less the very demanding corona virus cases. The only rational strategy for Zimbabwe was to focus on testing and making sure all those with the virus are in isolating and thus keep a lid on the virus spreading. The country is ill equipped to deal with covid 19 patients requiring hospital treatment.

The corona virus outbreak found us already in the gutter because of Zanu PF misrule it is no surprise then that Zanu PF incompetence should drag us even deeper into the abyss than if we had a competent government to see us through the pandemic.

Zimbabweans have yet to take the business of good governance with the seriousness the matter demands. Zanu PF is only going to drag the nation deeper and deeper into this hell-on-earth!

  10. The Zimbabwe government was left scrambling Friday following videos showing a boisterous crowd celebrating the arrival of the New Year in Harare's Mbare township, despite a blanket ban on such gatherings due to Covid-19.

The footage captured by Associated Press (AP) photojournalist Tsvangirayi Mukwazhi showed thousands of people partying with little or no regard for coronavirus protocols.

This sparked national outrage and embarrassment for both government and the police, who had vowed to crack down on any such gatherings on New Year's eve going into 2021.

  11. VICE President Constantino Chiwenga Saturday evening reintroduced stricter lockdown measures will all workers save for essential services not allowed to go to work during the 30-day period.

Chiwengwa also declared a dusk to dawn curfew following an upsurge of COVID-19 cases in the country amid deaths of some prominent citizens and other locals during the festive season.

In an address to the nation, said local people should stay indoors and restaurants, bars, bottle stores have been shutdown.

The foolishness is now becoming intolerable! Zimbabwe does not have 2 254 active corona virus cases because if it did then the hospitals across the land could not be overwhelmed by 225 or so patients! There will be no need of a nationwide total lockdown if there are only 2 254 active cases in the whole country of 16 million.

The regime has been lying about the number of corona virus cases and deaths. The true figures are a lot higher than the official ones and the regime is now caught in its own web of lies!

  13. Health minister Zweli Mkhize said on Sunday that the government was committed to rolling out vaccines with urgency to establish herd immunity against Covid-19.

Speaking during a virtual public briefing, outlining the Department of Health's Covid-19 vaccine rollout strategy, he said they had to be made available to all South Africans, starting with the most vulnerable and health workers.

He said that at over 40 million citizens will receive the vaccine in 2021, and that frontline workers and vulnerable groups will be first in line to get their jab.

He said government was targeting 67% or the population in its strategy to establish herd immunity.

Health workers "need to be protected so they can ensure the stability of our own health care systems", he added.

About 10% of the population would be covered by the Covax programme but he said bilateral negotiations were already under way with various companies in the hope of securing some vaccines as early as February.

He said the rollout of vaccines would be done in three phases:

    • Phase one would focus on front line health workers with a target population of 1,250,000.

    • Phase two would include essential workers with a target population of 2,5m, people older than 60 (5m) and people older than 18 with co-morbidities (8m)

Phase three would target other people older than 18 with a target population of 22,5m.

I have every confidence that SA will deliver on this promise of 40 million jabs; the Ramaphosa government has kept its promises and has been honest and open in its handling of the corona virus. Sadly the same cannot be said of the Zimbabwe government.

There are reports of the covid-19 cases and deaths figures shooting through the roof a far cry from the very small official figures, the lies and damn lies from this Zanu PF regime.

The best Zimbabwe can hope for is to have enough vaccine for 10% of the population in 2021. And no prices for guessing who will get the vaccine!

Doctors informed me that all Covid-19 hospital units are full.Citizens are now dying without getting access to hospitalisation. Be vigilant follow Covid-19 precautions at all times:mask up, wash hands!

As of today, officially Zimbabwe has 3 311 active corona virus cases in the whole country. We all know from cases in other countries that only a fraction of active cases require hospital treatment. For the last week reports of many covid-19 patients flood our hospitals have been pouring in. One assumes each and every one of these hospitals will have informed the relevant government officials of the rising covid-19 cases.

The question then arises why is it that hospitals are being overwhelmed by covid-19 patients and yet, officially, the number of active cases in the country is very low.

If 10% of the active cases require hospital treatment then why is the country being overwhelmed with only 331 patients?

Zanu PF has lied about the number of corona virus cases and deaths in the country and now the nation is paying dearly for these lies!

Zanu PF has got away with the corona virus lies for a whole year now because the opposition was fast asleep. The nation is paying dearly for having a corrupt, incompetent and totally useless opposition.

How ironic and foolish that Chamisa should now be blaming the ordinary people for the up surge in corona virus cases when the principle culprits are the deceitful ruling party and their partner in crime, the incompetent opposition.

  15. The greatest source of fake news on corona virus in Zimbabwe is the Zanu PF government itself. The party has used every trick in the book to under report the corona virus cases in the country for the purpose of burying the truth on its blundering incompetence in the handling of the pandemic. As long as the official figures remained very low the regime could claim credit for containing the virus.

With hospitals now being overwhelmed by covid-19 cases it is becoming clear the official figure of 3 311 active cases is a lie!

By failing to test and thus send all those with the virus into isolation, for example, Zimbabwe has allowed people with the virus to lmix freely with the rest and thus spread the virus. We are now paying dearly for our folly!

There are 1 001 things wrong with the way Zanu PF has handled the corona virus pandemic one of which is the failure to carryout tests and thus keep track of how the virus was spreading. Zimbabwe's hospitals are being overwhelmed by the covid-19 patients and yet the country continues to claim to have a misery 3 311 active cases only. This is a lie and we are paying dearly for it.

For a year now Zanu PF has falsified Zimbabwe's corona virus figures and the opposition has said nothing!

Chamisa's statement here is for one purpose and one purpose only to grab headlines without changing anything of substance - typical of what the nation has came to expect from the opposition! To what extent it benefited the ordinary men and women because some arrangements are simple window dressing, we are not interested in window dressing arrangements but having said that, Zimbabweans did benefit tangibly from the GNU of 2009 to 2013

In May 2014, we had a congress of the MDC and where we made a resolution regarding sanctions and this resolution says that the MDC will work towards Zimbabwe's international re-engagement.

It also went on to say any positive move on the part of the international community must be made by an equally positive move on the part of Zimbabwe in instituting key social, political and economic reforms.

The single most important task MDC leaders have been entrusted to carry out by the people of Zimbabwe is to implement democratic reforms designed to end the Zanu PF dictatorship. After 20 years, 5 of which in the 2008 to 2013 GNU, MDC leaders have failed to deliver even one meaningful reform.

It is a historic fact that MDC leaders sold-out on reforms during the GNU period; a fact the MDC has never acknowledged much less deal with.

The most important MDC-T congress resolution in 2014 was that the party would not take part in future elections until democratic reforms have been implemented. “No reform! No elections!”

The party disregarded the “No reform! No elections!” The following year, 2015, out of selfish greed - the leaders had their beady eyes on the few gravy train seats Zanu PF was giving away as bait to entice the opposition to participate. MDC-T is gearing to participate in the 2023 elections with no reforms in places for the same reason - greed.

What Zimbabwe needed 20 years ago was a party that would implement the democratic changes necessary to end the Zanu PF dictatorship; MDC-T has failed to deliver the changes and never will. With the country now up to her eye balls in this economic and political mess the need for a competent opposition party is now more urgent than ever.

  19. Only 2746 PCR tests!

With the nation reporting of hospitals being overwhelmed by corona virus patients this means many of the patients with all the symptoms of corona virus in our hospitals are still waiting to be tested! As for the people the patients have been in touch with and should be tested, they will never be tested.

For a nation so poorly resourced its health care services has all but completely collapsed and therefore can offer nothing to anyone suffering from even the simplest ailments let alone corona virus one would have thought the country would be doing everything it can to stop the virus spreading and what better way than testing and isolating. Why Zimbabwe has not been testing beggars belief.

SA has been doing as many as 44 000 tests per day as of 12 December 2020 and given our population is 1/4 we should be doing 11 000 but are doing 2 746 test today up from 1577 on 5 December 2020.

Zimbabwe's real corona virus cases and deaths are a lot higher than the official figures of 19 660 and 468 respectively. We have not been testing as thoroughly as we should and are paying dearly for it given the soaring numbers of cases and deaths! Failing to record the figures officially does not change the reality on the ground and it is the reality that matters here.

  20. HUNDREDS of Harare and Bulawayo nurses, who went on strike on Thursday, resumed their duties yesterday after government provided the personal protective equipment (PPE) they were demanding.

On Thursday, nurses at major public hospitals demonstrated against being forced to go to work without PPE, arguing that they were being exposed to highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

Zimbabwe Nurses Association (Zina) president Enoch Dongo yesterday told NewsDay Weekender that government had taken heed of their concerns and vowed to provide PPE.

Nurses at Sally Mugabe Hospital (formerly Harare Central) in Harare withdrew their services after some of their colleagues and other patients tested positive for COVID-19.

Government also gave in to the nurses' demand for flexible working hours which will see a limited number of staff reporting for duty at any given time.

"Authorities agreed to draft another duty roster with fewer health workers at any given time which will be effective starting Monday next week," Dongo said. "This will result in nurses decongesting the health institutions. Also, it helps the number of nurses that will be exposed to the deadly virus at any given time.

"Most importantly, government is not in a capacity to provide enough PPE if all nurses report for duty at once, but if we revert back to the flexible working hours, government will be able to provide the required PPE to all the fewer nurses who will be on duty," said.

This is just chop-logic! The number of nurses on duty should be dictated by the work-load and with the corona virus cases increasing the work-load is going through the roof. The number of staff on duty has already been reduced considerably because most health care workers have left the country due to poor working conditions and the few still in the country have complained of their poor wages forcing some to work a reduced days just because they cannot afford transport cost.

And now the number of staff on duty is being reduced even further because there is not enough PPE! This is really sickening!

“JANUARY 2021 has been cancelled," is a joke that went viral in Zimbabwe last weekend.

It is a joke premised on Zimbabwe's return to COVID-19 lockdown measures. These are the strictest conditions, where only essential service providers are allowed to go to work and inter-city travel is banned.

Informal trading is banned and those businesses allowed to operate can only do so between 8am and 3pm. And for good measure, there is a 6pm to 6am curfew.

Zimbabweans have themselves to blame for saying nothing even when they could see government's official corona virus cases and deaths were meaningless. Zimbabweans have taken great comfort in being helpless and this time they are paying dearly for it because corona virus has spread far and wide causing cases and deaths to soar, far beyond the official figures of 19 660 cases and 468 deaths!

Most of our COVID-19 centres have enough beds people should not rely on social media or hearsay," explains Mangwiro.

Zimbabwe is a hotspot alright although the country’s official corona virus cases and deaths say otherwise.

It is ironic that Deputy Minister of health confirms the whole country is a corona virus hotspot and yet some province are failing to carry out even one test per day! People who want to travel from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana as well as island nations Mauritius and Seychelles will be barred from entering the UK, an advisory said.

The countries are seen as having a high number of travel connections with South Africa.

British and Irish nationals are exempt when arriving back from these countries, but will need to follow quarantine procedures when arriving in the UK.

Scientists say the South African Covid-19 variant is more transmissible with research still ongoing about whether it can harm the effectiveness of vaccines that have been developed.

For the developed nations that have already started to vaccinate its nationals, they can see the light at the of the tunnel. For poor countries like Zimbabwe the earliest they can expect the vaccine in any significant quantity is next year. 2021 will be a torturous year with soaring corona virus numbers and serious economic hardship triggered by the worsening economic situation. And having a blundering corrupt and incompetent regime at a time like this is hell-on-earth!

One of the serious shortcomings of Zimbabwe’s with the handling of the corona virus pandemic is failing to test for the virus. Zimbabwe must have one of the lowest test per capita in the world. Whilst SA has been doing over 44 000 tests per day Zimbabwe has rarely done 1 500 tests per day.

There is no doubt that Zimbabwe has not been testing all patients in hospitals with all the corona virus symptoms for example. Our official corona virus figures have been very low but only because we have not been testing - among other reasons.

There are many occasions Midlands Province has failed to do even one test per day. So what is the point of having a covid-19 response team 24/7 when they spend all day twiddling with their thumbs.

  25. So far Rose has not grown a tail!

The Vigil urges everyone to take the vaccine if they are offered it.

Well very pleased to hear that Rose has taken her corona virus vaccine and "has not grown a tail"!

Could not agree with you more; all those who get a chance to have the vaccine must take it. And until you have the jab, stay at home as much as you can and if you must go out, please follow the health guidelines to the letter!

  26. THE country recorded 978 new Covid-19 positive cases and 24 deaths in the last 24 hours. All 978 cases are local cases with 559 cases from Harare alone. A total of 4 936 PCR tests were conducted. New recoveries were 143.

"As at 10 January 2021, Zimbabweans has recorded 21 477 confirmed cases, including 12 582 recoveries 8388 active and 507 deaths," reads statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

Zimbabwe has lived a lie of low official covid-19 cases and deaths and the nation is now paying for it. One way the country has kept its corona virus figures very low was by not testing, even when doing so made no sense at all.

Even as recent as last month, December, Zimbabwe was still carrying out 1 500 or so tests per day; one of the lowest test per capita in the whole region. On 8/1/21 the increased the tests to 2 746 PCR per day even though the reported new cases had surged to 985!

By failing to test the country has left many infected individuals who should be in isolation to spread the virus and we are now paying dearly for it!
