"EU and US urge protagonists to resolve Zim crisis" - not Zanu PF and MDC, they are the antagonists P Guramatunhu

“The United States of America and the European Union have implored authorities to engage the MDC to end the country's myriad of challenges,” reported Daily News.

“In a joint statement, which was also supported by Scandanavian countries, the EU and USA called on President Mnangagwa to initiate dialogue with the MDC to end the country's worsening political and economic crises.”

This is just gutter journalism at its worse! Just because Daily News has its fixations with Zanu PF and MDC as the only actors to take the nation out of this hell-on-earth does not mean everyone else does, especially the west!

The joint statement from the EU, USA and other western diplomats called on “all protagonists” to resolve the country’s political paralysis but never mentioned Zanu PF or MDC.

"The Heads of Mission further urge all protagonists to resolve political conflicts through constructive dialogue and remain clear that international re-engagement is contingent on genuine and sustained implementation of political and economic reform,” read the joint statement.

Zanu PF and their political acolytes MDC are certainly NOT the protagonists, as in advocates and champions, of the national cause of implementing the democratic reforms to end the corrupt and tyrannical dictatorship and replace it with a democratic system of government.

Zanu PF are the antagonists in that they are the ones who created the de facto one-party dictatorship and do not want it dismantled because they are benefiting from it. Zanu PF has no intention of implementing meaningful reforms because it will reform itself out of office.

If Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends ever wanted to bring about any meaningful democratic changes, as the party’s name implies, they abandoned that as a lost cause during the 2008 to 2013 GNU. Mugabe bribed them with the trappings of high office; ministerial limos, very generous salaries and allowances, a US$4 million mansion for Tsvangirai, etc., etc. And to show their gratitude to the dictator, Tsvangirai and company threw implementing reforms out of the window.

Not even the repeated nagging by SADC leaders failed to get Tsvangirai et al to implement even one token reform in five years. The regional body had arm-twisted Mugabe to sign the Global Political Agreement, agreeing to the implementation of the raft of democratic reforms.

Ever since the 2008 GNU, MDC’s position has been to participate in Zimbabwe’s flawed and illegal elections to win as many of the gravy-train seats Zanu PF has been giving away as bait. Of course, the MDC leaders know that by participating in the rigged elections they give the process some credibility; as David Coltart, a leading MDC leader, has readily admitted.

In his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe, David Coltart, former MDC – Ncube Senator and Minister of Education in the 2008 GNU, gave details of how Zanu PF was flouting the electoral rules in the upcoming 2013 elections. It was clear the elections would not be free, fair and credible.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” wrote Senator Coltart.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

Like it or not MDC leaders will participate in elections regardless how flawed and illegal the process happens as long as there are a few gravy-train seats on offer. They are no longer interested in implementing the reforms to ensure free, fair and credible elections.

“EU and USA called on President Mnangagwa to initiate dialogue with the MDC to end the country's worsening political and economic crises!” Talk of mental paralysis.

Zimbabwe is in this economic and political mess precisely because the country has been stuck for 40 years and counting with a corrupt, ruthless and vote rigging dictatorship. The dictatorship is the problem! How can it be the solution too?

  1. Zanu PF has brainwashed some people into believing that the party has the divine right to govern the country regardless of the fact the party rigged the July 2018 elections. What is more, the brainwashed now believe the EU, USA and the rest of the international community are all sold to the idea that whatever government the nation has going forward it must include Zanu PF.

The EU, the Americans and the rest of the international community know that Zimbabwe is in this political and economic mess precisely because the country has been stuck with the corrupt and incompetent Zanu PF dictatorship for 40 years and counting. The witnessed the July 2018 elections and know Zanu PF blatantly rigged the elections. They know the regime is illegitimate.

It is is therefore nonsensical that the EU, USA and the international community will ever back a Zanu PF and MDC coalition knowing fully well that it is just an excuse to keep Zanu PF in power.

The only realist way out of this mess is for Zanu PF to step down; the regime has no divine right to govern. Period!

“I agree with everything you wrote but you did not touch on the central question, which is HOW DO WE MAKE ZANUPF STEP DOWN.”
I agree with you 100%, the crux of the matter is to end the Zanu PF dictatorship by making it step down or by whatever other means available to us. I believe we have had many golden opportunities in the last 40 years to end the dictatorship and wasted them all. By taking time off to understand what those golden opportunities were and what we should have done can we be absolutely certain we will seize the next opportunity to end the dictatorship and not waste it.
The best opportunity the country had to get the Zanu PF dictatorship was during the 2008 to 2013 GNU. All Tsvangirai and his MDC friends had to do was implement the raft of reforms agreed in the Global Political Agreement. They had five years to do this but fail to implement even one reform because they are breathtakingly corrupt and incompetent.
Of course, MDC leaders have sold-out big time; one does not have to be a rocket scientist to see that – only need to open your eyes and mind.
The very fact that there are still Zimbabweans out there who continue to believe MDC leaders will end the Zanu PF dictatorship, even now with all the benefit of hindsight, is itself proof of yet another underlying problem – a naïve and gullible electorate.
We are hoping to end the dictatorship and replace it with a healthy and function democracy. The latter demands an informed, diligent and very assertive, of their freedoms and rights, electorate. Building a democracy with a naïve and gullible electorate is like building a house on soft ground; the house will collapse soon after the first rains.
A well-informed electorate would know Zanu PF rigged the July 2018 electorate and it will be standing solid as the rock of Gibraltar in asserting its right to a meaningful vote and demanding that the illegitimate Zanu PF steps down. Our mud-brick electorate have allowed Zanu PF to ride roughshod over them as has happened countless times these last 40 years.
It is our own feeble-minded Zimbabwe electorate; not the EU, USA or anyone in the international community; who are calling for Zanu PF led government as the way out of this mess. They accept the country is in a mess but lack the guts to accept that Zanu PF is the party that dragged us into the mess. Zanu PF is the problem; how can it be the solution too.
In short, we have failed to end the Zanu PF dictatorship for the last 40 years because we are a naïve and gullible lot. We have put our faith and truth in corrupt and incompetent leaders and we deserve this corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship complete with its entourage of corrupt and incompetent opposition parties.
As long as we have a naïve and gullible electorate, even if Zanu PF was to step down all the nation will get is yet another corrupt and incompetent government. The third Republic will bring about very little change just as the second Republic brought none!

  3. Ever since Zimbabwe gained her independence in 1980, Zanu PF has held held the AK47 rifle to the nation's temple; it is either Zanu PF remains in power or there will be trouble. Each time the nation has tried to end the Zanu Pf dictatorship the party has reasserted its iron grip on power with ruthless brutality. It is little wonder that most people will not even consider any government without Zanu PF at the heart of it as a viable proposition.

If Zanu PF is removed from office, the party will make Zimbabwe ungovernable: that is a political reality the nation has to deal with!

    1. In five years of the GNU, MDC leaders failed to implement even one reform! Not one!

Mugabe bribe Tsvangirai and company to forget about the reforms. And they did! Of course, MDC leaders sold-out!

There are hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans out there who, even today with all the benefit of hindsight, have no clue what the GNU was about much less that MDC leaders sold-out.

Zanu PF is a party of ruthless thugs, true. But it is also a party of some of the most incompetent individuals there is; one has only got to look at the complete mess they have made of the economy to know what nincompoops Zanu PF leaders really are.

Zanu PF has hit the self destruct button and for the last 10 years the party thugs have been fighting each other to the death. The only reason Zanu PF has still remained in power to this day is because the people of Zimbabwe themselves are a feeble minded lot who do not even know what is in their own interest: that is the political reality the nation should be dealing with - if it had the intellectual capacity!

  4. @ Thompson Maziwayinkosi Bhebhe

“Hmmm but let’s call a spade a spade, this is reality, this man is saying the truth, Zim politicians must unite to save the country and it's people.

“Joshua Nkomo signed unite accord to save the people.

“Morgan Tsvangirai did the same thing.

“So why all these useless politicians think that they are bigger than the country, yet masses are suffering like this!”

The people are suffering precisely because of people like Saviour Kasukuwere who are wolves in sheep clothing. All the years he was in power he played his part in creating and imposing the Zanu PF dictatorship forgetting all this talk of unity and no one is greater than Zimbabwe. Mugabe was greater than Zanu PF which itself was greater than the country.

Kasukuwere, Jonathan Moyo, Emmerson Mnangagwa and the rest of the Zanu PF thugs had no qualms about Zanu PF rigging the elections, rob the people blind, etc. Kasukuwere and Moyo are condemning all these things now only because they are out of power and are saying it to con people into believing they care.

Even the most corrupt and murderous tyrants are still human beings and, per se, capable of compassion, hate and all the things one would expect from human being. That is exactly what William Blake was talking about in “Cruelty has a human heart!”

We already know Kasukuwere is a wolf and therefore it would very foolish indeed to be conned into believing he is a wolf that has lost its appetite for meat and turned vegetarian!
