"Covid-19 donations must be audited" says Tendai Biti - a hypocrite does not mean what he says P Guramatunhu

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti says government should audit all donations made towards curbing the spread of coronavirus to ensure that all those who abused the contributions are brought to book,” reported Daily News.

“This comes amid fears that several people with connections to the government are siphoning off the donations for their personal gain.”

This is just Tendai Biti blubbering to get attention!

Tendai Biti, of all people, should know that Zanu PF is accountable to no one. How many millions of dollars are being looted every month from Marange and Chiadzwa Diamonds Fields. He, as the Minister of Finance 2008 to 2013, knew about the looting and also knew this was a closed book.

Even when the regime has allowed the auditors to go through the regime’s books and large sums of money have disappeared; no one has ever been held to account.
If Zimbabwe is serious about having a democratically accountable government then the starting point has to be with elections. We must implement the democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections.

Tendai Biti and his MDC friends had the golden opportunity to implement the reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU. They were busy enjoying the trappings of high office; the ministerial limos, the generous salaries, a US$4 million mansion for Tsvangirai, etc.; they forgot about implementing the reforms.

Not content with having sold-out during the 2008 GNU, Tendai Biti and his fellow MDC leaders have gone on to participate in the flawed and illegitimate elections knowing fully well that Zanu PF was rigging the elections and, worse still, that by participating they were giving credibility to the illegal process and some modicum of legitimacy to the Zanu PF regime.

In his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of tyranny in Zimbabwe, David Coltart, former MDC – Ncube Senator and Minister of Education in the GNU, gave details of how Zanu PF was flouted the electoral rules in the upcoming 2013 elections. It was clear the elections would not be free, fair and credible and yet he and his fellow MDC friends did not withdraw out of selfish greed.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” wrote Senator Coltart.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

In short Tendai Biti not only knows that this Zanu PF regime is illegitimate and is not democratically accountable to the people but, worst of all, he knows that he and his MDC friends are the ones giving the regime legitimacy. His call for transparency and accountability with covid-19 aid is just hot air from the seasoned hypocrite who does not mean a word he says!

  1. The regime and its puppets are working overtime to exterminate MDC Alliance, but we are vowing that Zimbabwe will never be a one party state!

We will never be deterred, we remain focused as we are the only credible political party in Zimbabwe, and we will restore our country to its former Glory.

You can claim all you want that the Supreme Court judgement is about "exterminating MDC A" that will not change the facts on the ground. The judgement was about whether Chamisa followed the MDC constitution when he seized power after Tsvangirai's death. If you cannot be truthful and honest about such a clear cut case it is little wonder the party has accomplished nothing of note in all its 20 years on the political stage.

The people of Zimbabwe deserve competent and honest leaders and not the corrupt and incompetent leaders we have seen in both Zanu PF and MDC! MDC is the "only credible political party in Zimbabwe!" Yeah right!

  2. Therefore, to date, Zimbabwe has thirty-six confirmed cases, including nine recoveries and four deaths.

Cumulatively, a total of 11 664 rapid screening tests and 9 872 PCR diagnostic tests have been done to date…

Case #36 reported yesterday is a 30-year-old male resident of Chegutu district, with no recent history of travel, or any known contact with a person with respiratory symptoms.

He was referred for PCR testing after testing positive on a screening test conducted at his workplace using a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT).

He is asymptomatic, self-isolating at home, with mild disease.

Following the COVID-19 diagnosis, the Ministry is now seized with contact tracing being assisted by the patient himself.

Today, surveillance teams from the Ministry identified 7 of his contacts and these will be tested for COVID-19 in line with our intensified surveillance strategy.

So where did he get the virus from if he had not travelled outside the country?

There is now as much chance of being covid-19 positive for someone arriving from outside Zimbabwe as for one who has been at home! The demand to quarantine returnees is now a farce especially given the chaos and unhygienic conditions in these quarantine centres!

Zimbabwe has not been doing enough tests and tracing and the country will pay dearly for this!

  3. MDC A UK Women Assembly are solidly behind Chamisa.

MDC leaders made a big mistake in failing to implement even one reform during the 2008 GNU, it is disappointing that some MDC members have failed to accept this simple fact even now with the benefit of hindsight. It is no surprise that some MDC members are once again refusing to accept that Chamisa broke the party's own rules when he took over from Tsvangirai.

It is no wonder African leaders have always become demigods, with an electorate that will follow you like sheep no questions asked it is impossible to be anything else! The tragedy is with such sheep for voters there is no chance of building a healthy and functioning democracy. Even if a democracy was fostered on the nation; with this lot, we will revert to a dictatorship in no time.

  4. I used to hang my head with shame at the way Zanu PF Women grovelled to Mugabe even when the tyrant's hands were dripping with the blood of the innocent Zanu PF members saw nothing wrong! I thought the days of the fanatical supporters were behind us but all we have done is swap one leader for another, swapped the Zanu PF regalia for MDC red regalia!

  5. The MPs were clear on that they will follow the decision of the party and that they will not surrender the people’s project to Zanu PF.
In solidarity with the four MPs who were wrongfully withdrawn from Parliament, the MPs agreed to disengage from Parliament pending conclusion of the ongoing consultation processes.
The Members of Parliament also agreed to be involved in the ongoing consultation processes with the structures and the general electorate.
MDC leaders’ failure to get even one meaningful reform implemented in five years of the 2008 GNU has underlined just how corrupt, incompetent and utterly useless they are. After that it is no surprise that they are at sixes and sevens over a matter that is as clear as day to everyone else, proof these are men and women to whom rule of law, truth, logic and common sense mean nothing!
Zimbabwe is in the middle of corona virus, the greatest existential threat of our time, and already it is clear that Zanu PF is making the pandemic worse with its blundering incompetence. The nation should be occupied with the important business of replacing the Zanu PF dictatorship a.s.a.p. and is wasting time on defending the lie that Chamisa did nothing wrong when he seized power in February 2018! Talk of playing the fiddle as Rome burns!

  6. There is no doubt that the Zanu PF regime has failed to stop the virus getting into the country. The way the regime has allowed Zororo Makamba to mix with the populous even when he had the covid-19 symptoms is downright criminal!
There is no excuse why our government has ignored the repeated calls to test, track, isolate and treat! It is now clear the regime is deliberately falsifying the number of covid-19 cases and deaths. This is all easy to do now whilst the numbers are relatively small but this is about to change.
So far corona virus has not been as contagious in Zimbabwe as it has been in other countries. It is possible the virus is not as contagious in warm weather as it is in cold weather. We are heading for the cold weather in coming weeks. It will be impossible to falsify the large numbers of very sick people and deaths.
History will look back and realise how Zanu PF blundering incompetence had made the corona virus pandemic worse. It was bad enough having a corrupt and incompetent Zanu PF regime during the good times it is a curse to have such a regime in power through a life and death struggle such as this covid-19 pandemic.
History will show the nation had many golden chances to end the curse of corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF rule and the likes of Tendai Biti and his MDC friends wasted them all. The same Biti who is now calling for Zanu PF to be accountable for covid-19 assistance failed to implement even one reforms to make the regime democratically accountable to the people. What a hypocrite, indeed!

  7. There is no denying that America was slow off the mark in instituting measures to stop the corona virus getting into the country. Other countries like New Zealand did a good job in this respect.
President Trump was once again slow off the mark is aggressively testing, tracking and isolating to stop the virus spreading. South Korea has done a much better job in this area.
There is no doubt that President Trump has been tested by the covid-19 pandemic and found wanting. The people of America will have a chance to remove him from office if they so wish come November, in six months time.
President Mnangagwa has blundered from pillar to post, he really does not have a clue what he is doing.
He has made a big song and dance about how his regime was ready to take the thousands of Zimbabweans forced to return to the country. It turns out the quarantine centres to house the returnees have dormitory accommodation where people will share toilet and washing facilities with 20 or so others. Most of the centres do not even have something as basic as clean running water. The quarantine centres are corona virus hotspots in their own right.
The Zanu PF regime has failed to follow any of the WHO advice on testing, tracking, isolation and treatment even when the regime got the test kits! Worst of all, the regime is falsifying the covid-19 data to give the impression it has the virus under control.
The people of Zimbabwe did not elect Mnangagwa and his regime, the tyrant blatantly rigged the elections. With no hope of meaningful democratic reforms being implemented before the next elections in 2023, it is almost certain Zanu PF will rig those elections too.
The country’s main opposition is corrupt and incompetent; MDC leaders failed to get even one reform implemented even when they had the best chance to do so during the 2008 GNU. Right now the MDC leaders are busy fighting amongst themselves of trivial matters, they are not holding the blundering Zanu PF to account much less get any reforms implemented.
The stark difference between a healthy and functional democracy in America and a corrupt blundering dictatorship in Zimbabwe could not be more pronounced, especially during times of trouble. In Zimbabwe we are in deep trouble made worse by our blundering tyrannical government!

  8. @ Fungai Chiganangana
“Political or economic issues yes maybe but certainly not Covid - 19. The same Obama you are referring to admitted that even the best of governments could have serious challenges with this virus. I am of the opinion that he is responding well compared to other countries including the advanced economies. This pandemic is not "user friendly" to African way of living.”
It was clear corona virus was going to get into the country by someone coming in from outside. Zimbabwe should have put into place a system in which all new arrivals are placed in quarantine; the more reason when you know your health system has all but collapsed and you cannot afford an outbreak. Then one hears that even when officials had identified someone like Zororo Makamba with all the covid-19 symptoms he was allowed to mix freely with the populous!
Zimbabwe received 50 000 test kits over a month ago and yet the government is still not testing, tracking and isolating as aggressively as it should. Worse still, government is not releasing the true figures of covid-19 and deaths so people like you can say “it is responding well”.
The truth is Zanu PF’s blundering incompetence is helping the virus spread far and wide and the seriousness of the situation will emerge as the country moves into the cold weeks ahead when the virus is more contagious.
Zanu PF rigged the 2018 elections and now thinks it can rig the covid-19 statistics. Zimbabwe has a lot more covid-19 cases than 36 and 4 deaths. The consequence of rigging the virus numbers are many, many more Zimbabweans will be infected, many will suffer and die! Watch this space!

  9. A delegation of 12 Chinese medical experts has jetted in Harare to assist the country in the fight against the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

The delegation is bringing with them medical supplies including ventilators, face masks and PPEs.
Well this is a piece of good news.
Zimbabwe has 36 covid-19 cases, 4 deaths and 9 recoveries leaving only 23 of whom none of them are serious ill to require hospitalisation. If the regime had been vigilant as these figures would suggest then there will be a handful of unknown cases still out there, at the most.
I, for one, do not believe the government is telling the truth. It is clear, the Chinese do not believe the official figures either otherwise they would not be sending 12 experts plus a plane load of stuff to treat 23 patients and none of whom are even in hospital!
The Chinese know and understand why Zanu PF is giving false information on the number of covid-19 cases and deaths – propaganda. The Chinese government had tried to silence the corona virus outbreak giving the virus time to spread. China is still being blamed for failing to tell the truth immediately the blame would weigh even more heavily if the numbers of covid-19 cases and deaths were among the highest.
Zanu PF has blundered from pillar to post ever since the covid-19 outbreak the regime in desperate to keep the true figures of cases and deaths as low as possible. No doubt the regime would want to say the Chinese experts are here to treat malaria patients, at least the sick will be getting the medical help. One only hopes that the months of blundering and denying will not result in the health service being overwhelmed by these malaria patients!

  10. The new parliament building located in Mount Hampden is nearing completing. A 3d image of the interior part of the building has surfaced on the internet.

The parliament is being funded by the Communist government of China.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony in November 2018,President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the current situation where 350 legislators (including the Senate and National Assembly), and 248 secretariat staff are crammed in a space meant for 100 representatives, does not augur well with principles of parliamentarism.
If the ruling elite had not been going outside the country for their health care needs and education of their children then they would have seen the need for the country to use the money to build hospitals and universities. The new parliament was designed to match the sprawling palatial mansions the ruling elite live in.
The living conditions of the ruling elite compared to that of the ordinary Zimbabwe speaks volumes. It is as clear as day Zimbabwe is not a democratic country in which those in public office are accountable to the people. In Zimbabwe the ruling elite are the masters and the people are the slaves!
No wonder Zanu PF thugs have been rigging elections, the prospect of losing power and all the influence and wealth it brought to them was simply unthinkable!
The new parliament will be opened at a time the nation is going through its worst ever social and humanitarian convulsions following the tragic human suffering and deaths brought about by worldwide corona virus pandemic but made worse by the four decades of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption.
The country must surely revaluated itself and the overwhelm this failed political system that has brought so much human suffering and deaths to so many to feed the insatiable greed of the few ruling elite! What is there to be proud of this grand new parliament when the price of building it was condemning millions of the people to abject poverty and hopelessness!
Indeed, the grandeur of the new parliament, the sprawling palatial mansions of the ruling elite, etc. epitomises the decadence of the country’s ruling elite and all they stand for. It is the poor who have paid for all this with the looted wealth and with their very lives!
