Zimbabwe will continue using fossil fuel, says Mnangagwa - two-fingers salute to Davos and COP26 N Garikai

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has vowed to continue using fossil fuel until Zimbabwe attains developed nation status!

"They (Western countries) developed their industries through fossil fuels and now they do not want us to use our natural resources to also develop. We will not agree to that. They should agree with us on the timeframe to shift from thermal power to clean energy. And they should also finance the
transition," he told Zanu PF supporters in Glen View.

This was in stark contrast to his November 2021 COP26 statement in Glasgow last year.

“Zimbabwe has set an ambitious objective of reducing carbon emissions by 40% per capita by 2030. The removal of illegal sanctions which have been imposed on my country will go a long way in helping to enable the achievement of this target,” announced President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his speech at UN conference on Climate Change in Glasgow, UK.

What has changed between November 2021 and now?

President Mnangagwa and a high-powered delegation have just returned from attending the world economic forum, in Davos, Switzerland. They were there to make a fresh bid to woo investors. Mnangagwa’s mantra “Zimbabwe is open for business!” to the same Davos forum back in 2018, soon after when seized power from Mugabe, had failed no takers.

Back in 2018 investors were not convinced Zimbabwe the musical chairs within the Zanu PF dictatorship following the November 2017 military coup had transformed the country in any meaningful way to end its pariah state. The regime’s failure to keep its promise to hold free, fair and credible elections in July 2018 - if proof nothing had changed was ever need.

There is no denying Zimbabwe’s economic situation has got progressively worse since 2018 forcing Mnangagwa to launch another bid to woo investors. A waste of time and money since nothing had change since 2018 to end Zimbabwe’s pariah state status.

President Mnangagwa is clearly under no illusions that his fresh “Zimbabwe is open for business!” will be followed by a flood of investors. His Glen View speech is his two-finger salute to COP26 and to the West in general.

  1. On disappearances of persons, Zimbabwe is said to have failed to give a reasonable response, with the police continuously saying they were providing fortnightly reports on investigations of, for example, the disappearance of activist-cum-journalist Itai Dzamara in 2015.

“The police were also investigating the disappearances of Patrick Nabanyama and Paul Chizuze (opposition activists),” the report read.
On the recall of opposition Members of Parliament and councillors, the report said government explanation was that it was initiated by opposition political parties due to their internal disputes.

This only serves to underline the importance of implementing the democratic reforms before elections. It is an exercise in futility to hold elections knowing fully well that Zanu PF is rigging the process and participating will only benefit Zanu PF by giving the regime legitimacy.

It is infuriating that it is MDC/CCC not only leading the camp participating with no reforms but more significantly they are the ones who failed to implement even one reform in 22 years, 5 of which in the GNU.

  2. The peer-reviewed study, published in the scientific journal Nature, found that 90% of coal should remain un-extracted, and nearly 60% of oil and fossil methane gas should stay underground to have a 50% chance of keeping global temperatures from rising above 1,5 degrees Celsius pre-industrial levels.

China's biggest bank has walked away from a coal power plant in Zimbabwe after the country cut financial support on fossil fuels across the globe.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China said it would no longer finance the 2,8 gigawatt Sengwa coal power plant in Zimbabwe.

  3. ZANU PF technocrats have come out guns blazing against speaker of parliament Jacob Mudenda for going against the party and promoting a diaspora vote.

Mudenda urged MPs to consider electoral reforms and include a diaspora vote. Parliament has the power to change the law and allow a diaspora vote in the 2023 elections.

ZANU PF technocrats are arguing that ZANU PF and it's leaders are currently under sanctions therefore it will be uneven ground as the party cannot campaign freely and fairly amongst the diaspora due to sanctions.
George Charamba under the moniker Tinoedza Zvimwe responded saying, "Even then on the basis of which law? He presides over Legislature and knows very well there is no legal requirement for this!!!!"

He has been accused of fraternizing with foreign embassies and being compromised and not serving the interests of the party.

Mudenda is allegedly positioning himself to replace Kembo Mohadi as Vice President of Zimbabwe at the National People's conference slated for this year.

Jacob Mudenda could not be reached for comment on the issue.

The problem of denying diaspora vote is not just Zanu PF doing it, MDC/CCC are equally to blame. MDC/CCC has been participating in these flawed elections knowing fully well that Zanu PF was rigging, denying diaspora vote is one of the many ways to rig, and that participating will only give Zanu PF legitimacy. Why would Zanu PF grant diaspora vote or implement any other reforms and risk losing the elections when the party knows the opposition will participate regardless and give it legitimacy!

  4. FORMER speaker of parliament, Lovemore Moyo, will be contesting for presidency against President Emmerson Mnangagwa and former ally, Nelson Chamisa, at next year's elections.

Moyo announced this at his United Movement for Devolution (UMD) Party manifesto launch in Njube, Bulawayo on Saturday.

He joins a growing list of presidential aspirants as the 2023 polls draw closer.

Titled, A Transformative Agenda for Total Reconstruction of State Power, Moyo's manifesto promised to prioritise devolution to reduce marginalisation, underdevelopment, inequality and injustice perpetuated by Zanu-PF over decades of misrule.
Ask these opposition candidates if the 2018 elections were free, fair and credible and most will admit the elections were rigged a few, those keen to be admitted into Mnangagwa’s POLAD, will say the elections were free and fair. What matters is that all the opposition candidates will participate in the 2023 elections for the same reason – greed, they are after the few gravy train seats Zanu PF is giving away to entice the opposition to participate.
By participating the opposition is giving Zanu legitimacy and giving up a few gravy train seats plus the bonus of POLAD treats is a small price to pay for legitimacy.
Lovemore Moyo was a senior MDC leader, speaker of parliament no less, throughout the 2008 to 2013 GNU, ask him how many reforms he implemented? He is just as incompetent and corrupt as the rest hence the reason why not even one reform was implemented in 5 years of the GNU. He is just another corrupt and incompetent MDC leader being recycled.
The real challenge is to expose the opposition for the greedy sell outs they are. A discredited opposition will not give Zanu PF legitimacy.

  5. AUTHORITIES at Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe have expressed concern that its classroom blocks face collapse as gold panners were digging under the school.

Globe and Phoenix school head Isaac Bvupajena told Southern Eye that the miners were so daring that they are carrying out their illegal mining activities within the school yard at night.

    This is chaos!

These panners are destroying property and disrupting the lives and livehoods of many others for the sake of a few grams of gold. If they were sued and forced to pay for all the damage they would not continue with their mining activities because they know the few gramms of gold will not pay for the damage.

This madness will not stop as long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state ruled by corrupt, incompetent and murderous thugs who have to rig elections to stay in power!
