"West is one demanding regime change" - actually it is povo P Guramatunhu

"Over the years, the US-backed and Western-sponsored opposition politics in our country has been in many ways a replay of Washington's mindless games that started soon after the declaration of the American Century at the end of the Second World War," wrote Reason Wafawarova, in Bulawayo 24.

"There is nothing new in the sponsorship of client political parties, and the regime change doctrine was actually overplayed in Latin America during the peak of the Cold War."

Tell me:

1.           Why are you condemning everything the west have done but either praise or say nothing about what the east has done? China, for example, has prop up the Zanu PF dictatorship and has never raised a finger to condemn Zanu PF for rigging elections, beating and murdering people. Have you ever heard China condemn Zanu PF for the 1st August 2018 or January 2019 shoot to kill order not even the Gukurahundi mass massacre!

2.           Has it ever occurred to you that the ordinary Zimbabweans are the ones behind the fight for free, fair and credible elections? Has it ever occurred to you that Zanu PF is denying the people this fundamental right under the pretext that it is the west and not povo who want this right.

3.           Do you really believe all Zimbabwe are so stupid and naïve that they failed to see that Zanu PF rigged last year’s elections and if the EU, the Commonwealth and other outsiders had not pointed out the glaring flaws and illegalities in the process not even one Zimbabwean would have noticed. How insulting!

The fight for free, fair and credible elections is the one fight that will be fought until it is won; there is no retreat and no surrender. Regime change is as certain as a ripe mango falling; the only thing to be established now is when and how.

By rigging the elections Zanu PF has rejected peaceful democratic regime change and, necessarily, opting for violent revolutionary change. The country’s worsening economic situation is going to force people to out coming and demand regime change regardless of the certainty the regime will beat, rape and shoot to kill all those who dare voice their dissent.

  1. MDC Alliance are a great disappointment, they are not taking the issue of free, fair and credible elections with the seriousness the matter demands. ZEC has been holding elections WITHOUT releasing a verified voters' roll although this is a legal requirement.

Zanu PF has given away a staggering 60 tonnes of maize meal and 30 tonnes of rice during the by-election campaign in this one area and not one single grain in all the other adjoining constituencies. If this is not blatant vote-buying then what is! Vote-buying and political coercion is particularly bad in the rural areas where the voters are as powerless as medieval serfs!

Zanu PF has allowed the opposition to win a few gravy train seats and it is this bait that the opposition are after. The opposition will take part in these elections regardless how flawed and illegal the process happens to be as long as they hold the hope of winning the scraps Zanu PF throws at them. And Zanu PF will maintain the flawed and illegal elections are free, fair and credible and point to the large number of contestants as proof . There were 17 opposition candidates in this by-election.

Zanu PF will never ever implement any meaningful democratic reforms as long as the party is assured of the opposition will participate in the elections regardless how flawed and illegal the process happens to be.

The challenge is for the ordinary people to denounce these opportunistic opposition parties and candidates who are selling out on the common cause of implementing the democratic reforms to ensure free, fair and credible elections for the few gravy train seats Zanu PF is offering as bait.

MDC leaders have failed to implement even one democratic reform in their 19 years on the political stage. Not one! Not because they did not have any opportunity to implement the reforms; they did but wasted them all. It is for the people to now wake-up to that political reality. Chamisa and company claim that they are fighting to end the suffering of the ordinary Zimbabweans, the reality is that if they ever did then they stopped doing a long time ago.

After 38 years of being short changed by the country's political ruling elite, it is now time for the ordinary people to take stock of what is really happening here. The country is in this mess because we, the electorate, have been naive and gullible. If we are serious about change and a better future for ourselves and posterity then it is for us to embrace change out with the naive and gullible and in with the informed and diligent!

  2. “2023 is on the horizon. MDC refuses to learn from proven irrefutable empirical evidence of how they lost many constituencies and councils in 2013, 2018 in places like Masvingo, Bulawayo, Mat South as a result of double candidates. Don’t blame rigging for such things,” said Dr Ruhanya.

This is just a feeble excuse, the combined votes by the two MDC A candidates was less than the votes cast for Mujuru, Zanu PF candidate. Besides only 10% of the voters bothered to vote.

The main reason MDC lost the by-election is because Zanu PF rigged the elections.

  3. Now under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Anjin and Russian diamond mining company Alrosa will spearhead the government’s target of raising at least US$400m in revenue by the end of 2019.
They will form partnerships with the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC).

“Anjin, which used to operate in the area, is now back on the ground. We expect that it will commence production, at the latest, by end of May. We are looking at it being a significant producer in that regard,” said mines and mining development minister Winston Chitando.

The Russians and Chinese – Zimbabwe’s “all weather friends”, key to the Mnangagwa administration – take up the diamond fields after neighbouring Botswana passed on an offer tabled by Harare.

As part of Zimbabwe and Botswana’s bi-national relations, Harare initially tabled an offer that would have seen Botswana give Zimbabwe a US$500m loan facility – which is a US$100m more than the year-end revenue target. In return, Botswana would mine diamonds from Chiadzwa.

However, Botswana said that due to budgetary constraints, Gaborone would not be able to support the proposed Diamond Backed Loan facility.

The Chinese helped Mnangagwa rig last year’s elections and their reward was to be allowed back into the country to take up the looting where they left off after Mugabe booted them out of the country. Mugabe complained that Zimbabwe had lost $15 billion in diamond revenue, he never named who were the swindlers but there is no doubt that the Chinese were involved!

  4. Zanu PF poured in 60 tonnes of maize meal and 30 tonnes of rice, a blatant vote-buying move. It is shocking how some people are ignoring that to talk about trivial maaters like MDC A splitting the vote. Last year's elections were not free, fair and credible because Zanu PF failed to release a verified voters' roll, there was no free public media, 3 million Zimbabweans in the diaspora were denied the vote, blatant vote buying, etc. These are the issues we should be concerned about and trivials!

“There are some serious lessons the #MDC Alliance needs to learn from this. ZANU PF will always mobilize their core support and rigidly impose one candidate. Once again we are back to minority rule in this ward in which the majority detest ZANUPF,” Coltart said

If Zanu PF support base is less than 2 000 out of 23 000 then the opposition do not need to wrong about Zanu PF gaining on them but worry about the voter apathy. The very fact that the opposition is doing nothing to stop Zanu PF buying votes and rig elections has undermined the people's confidence in the electoral process.

  5. Zanu PF and its apologists love to complain about how the IMF and WB are denying the regime financial support. The two institutions stopped the support when it was clear Zimbabwe was not repaying its existing debt. The regime would want the naive and gullible public to believe the support was stopped because of ZIDERA, that is a lie.

What is interesting is that the Chinese too have stopped giving Zimbabwe any financial assistance for the same reason - failing to repay debts. The Chinese have used the promise of new financial assistance to get what they want from the regime. The Chinese have strung Mugabe along whilst they carried out the wholesale looting in Chiadzwa, for example. Mugabe lost all patience with the Chinese after signing a string of "mega deal" projects that were never implemented. He finally booted them out in 2016.

The Chinese mollycoddled Mnangagwa, helped him rig the 2018 elections, signed another string of "mega deal" and they were allowed back into Zimbabwe. Whilst the west support the people's right to a meaningful vote including the right to change the regime the Chinese are doing everything in their power to make sure there is no regime change. The Chinese like the status quo, Zanu PF should rule until forever and as long as Zanu PF remains in power they loot!
