"Nothing short of free elections is acceptable," say Chamisa's new spin doctor - nonsense P Guramatunhu

Dr Nkululeko Sibanda is the MDC Alliance presidential candidate, Nelson Chamisa’s, new spokesman; taking over from Luke Tamborinyoka. He has only been in the post for one week and already Dr Sibanda, just like his predecessor before him, believes he has the silence to insult the good people of Zimbabwe by saying all manner of foolish things!

"The president is meeting with different people and will take action from their views. He is not taking action at the moment,” said Sibanda, according to Daily News.

"The president has made it very clear that nothing short of a free and fair election will be accepted by the people and ZEC must act in accordance with the law."

Zimbabwe is in this economic and political mess, with the national economy in total meltdown and stuck with a corrupt and tyrannical ruling party complete with its entourage of equally corrupt and incompetent opposition parties, because, for the last 38 years and counting, the nation has failed to hold free, fair and credible elections. Whilst it is no exaggeration that the people of Zimbabwe are desperate, they are dying, literally, for free, fair and credible elections; it is insulting to suggest that MDC leaders like Chamisa care that Zanu PF has rigged elections in the past and is set to rig this year’s elections too!

Just to refresh your memory Dr Sibanda, the people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect these MDC leaders into power on the understanding the party will bring about the democratic changes the nation needed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. By far the best chances MDC has had to accomplish this goal were during the 2008 to 2013 GNU, all they had to do was implement the raft of democratic reforms everyone agreed were necessary for free, fair and credible elections. They failed to implement even one reform in five years!

With no reforms in place SADC leaders, who were the guarantor of the agreement that gave birth to the GNU, advised MDC leaders not to take party in the 2013 elections without first implementing the reforms. “If you go into next month’s elections,” SADC leaders warned Morgan Tsvangirai, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube and all the other MDC leaders, “you will lose; the elections are done!”

Tsvangirai et al did not listen and took part in the flawed elections; just as they had paid no heed to calls for them to implement the reforms during the GNU; and for the same reason too -greed. David Coltart, one of the MDC cabinet ministers during the GNU, readily admitted that boycotting the elections was the most sensible option but the party discarded it because greed got the better of them.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” explained Senator Coltart in his book The Struggle Continues 50 years of tyranny in Zimbabwe.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

After the rigged 2013 elections MDC leaders seemed to come to their senses because they passed a party congress resolution that the party would not take part in future elections until the reforms are implemented. “No reform, no elections!” the nation was told. Sadly, as the date of the national elections approached greed crept in once again. Nelson Chamisa and his fellow MDC friends are participating in these elections knowing fully well that with no reforms in place Zanu PF will rig these elections just as blatantly as it rigged elections in the past.
Indeed, in their single-minded pursuit of the few seats Zanu PF has dangled to entice the opposition to take part in these flawed and illegal elections, MDC and the rest of the opposition opportunists have again and again undermined the efforts of those who have put Zanu PF leaders under renewed pressure to implement the reforms before these elections.

So, Dr Sibanda, we all know that Chamisa et al do not care that these elections are not going to be free, fair and credible, they have never cared before and are not going to do so now. What they care about is winning as many of these bait seats as possible and are only using the threat of boycotting the elections to pressure President Mnangagwa to take his heavy boot of the vote rigging juggernaut to give MDC a chance to win a few more bait seats.

The only other reason Chamisa and company want to keep the option to boycotting the elections right up to the voting day is as the bolt-hole. With no reform in place, no free public media, no verified voters’ roll, Zanu PF spending billions of dollars of looted national wealth to bankroll its vote rigging schemes, MDC losing all political credibility, etc., etc. it is becoming increasing difficult for the international election observers to pretend these are free, fair and credible elections. Before the elections are declared null and void MDC would play their boycotting the elections card in a last-ditch effort if not to claim the credit for triggering the nullification of the elections then to limit the damage to the party’s reputation for having participating in the flawed elections.

Dr Nkululeko Sibanda, being Chamisa’s spokesman and spin-doctor, does not give you or anyone else the right to rewrite history to suit MDC’s selfish interest especial on the issue of free, fair and credible elections. The nation has had many golden opportunities to implement the democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections and it is none other than MDC leaders who have wasted all these opportunities because they are corrupt and incompetent. You attempt to rewrite historic facts to give the impression Chamisa cares that there are free and fair elections is an insult to the nation the party has so blatantly betrayed!

  1. “The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has failed to meet its legal and constitutional obligation to provide election materials timely with reference to the voters roll and as such it owes the people of Zimbabwe an apology rather than a mouthful of arrogance by suggesting that if they are any anomalies in the voters roll we should stomach it and raise any complaints after the election and that only an earthquake will stop the election,” wrote Jameson Timba, election agent for MDC Alliance presidential candidate, Nelson Chamisa.

The very fact that Zimbabwe is in this economic and political mess because for the last 38 years the nation has failed to hold free, fair and credible elections and, worse still, will never get out of the mess until decisive action is taken to stop this curse of rigged elections. The critical importance of making sure these elections are free, fair and credible cannot, therefore, be more important and urgent to this nation.

ZEC has failed to produce a verified voters’ roll, this plus many other serious shortcoming in these elections have once again highlighted that these elections are flawed and illegal and can never ever be considered free, fair and credible.

It is very disappointing that Mr Timba and MDC leaders should think that asking ZEC to apologize will suffice in the circumstance! MDC’s wilfully inadequate reaction underlines how little these politicians understand what is going on in the country it is not surprising that MDC leaders failed to implement even one reform in five years when they had the golden opportunity to do so.

There is no chance of these elections being free, fair and credible and therefore the only logical thing to do is to declare them null and void!

  2. The Vice President said Zimbabwe needs to have a vibrant economy where jobs are secured for the young graduates. He said this can only be achieved in a corruption free environment.

Mr VP please look in the mirror and you will see one of those people who has been behind the rampant corruption that has destroyed the nation. Better still, at the next cabinet meeting, look around you and you will see even more of those who have destroyed the country after decades of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption.

It is you and your fellow Zanu PF thugs who have destroyed Zimbabwe but, typical of all thugs and tyrants, you are as arrogant as you are foolish, will never acknowledge you failed. You are offering to fix the economy but refuse to admit you destroyed it in the first place. If you are as clever as you think you are then why did you allow the country to sink into this mess this deep in the first place?

If the people of Zimbabwe believe you and your junta friends can fix the nation’s problems then you and your junta friends will have every right to govern the country. The people of Zimbabwe must elect you in a free, fair and credible election. Zanu PF has rigged elections in the past this will not be tolerated this time; these elections are not free and fair!

  3. @ Muvoti

Zanu PF have remove one dictator but only to replace him with another, the dictatorship itself has not changed. The corruption, gross mismanagement and blatant vote rigging that has kept the regime in power all these last 38 years are all there. How anyone can be so stupid and naive as to think Zanu PF has changed beggars belief.

The absence of these two men (Mugabe and Tsvangirai) from the ballot papers marks a monumental shift that has caught the country unawares.

Zanu PF is blatantly rigging these elections and that is what real matters here! These elections should not be taking place not without first implementing the reforms. We should be demanding that the process is declared null and void and not wait until the voting day.

  4. CHIEF'S Council president Fortune Charumbira has dug in and refused to comply with a recent High Court order compelling him to publicly apologise for urging traditional leaders to support the ruling Zanu-PF party.

Charumbira has, instead petitioned the High Court, seeking rescission of the judgment, which he claimed was erroneously arrived at.

He claimed that when he made the alleged offensive remarks he was not speaking in his personal capacity, but simply expressing the position taken by all the country's chiefs.

"It is evident from the statement that the remarks which I am alleged to have made are a statement of the position of chiefs. I was, therefore, simply enunciating, according to the statement, the position which had been adopted by chiefs. There is, therefore, no basis for me to be sued in my personal capacity at all," Charumbira said in his founding affidavit.

Well Chief Charumbira is right, he was speaking on behalf of the other Chiefs and expressing a position the Chiefs had taken and have followed for the last 38 years. Those who sued the Chief and the judges who ordered him to apologise are fools wasting time on superficial issues whilst ignoring the real life and death issues affecting real people.

  5. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Power is therefore a very powerful and potent drug which no one should ever be allowed to self administer because, having tasted it, they will want more and will have more if we the people were foolish enough to give them unlimited power. It is no exaggeration to say our politicians, on both side of the political divide, have shown they have no depth of character, a mere whiff of power and they will forget about freedom, justice, human rights, etc. as they walk all over the people in search of more power for themselves.

Dr Sibanda has only been is his current position as Chamisa's spokesman but that has been long enough for him to be punch drunk on how powerful he is. In seeking to engender himself to his new boss he is clearly sanitising MDC's history. Of course, MDC leader are corrupt, incompetent and they sold-out big time by failing to implement any reforms necessary for free and fair elections. No doubt our spin-doctor has already airbrushed these historic fact out of his head. His new spin is the Chamisa cares passionately about free, fair and credible elections.

I totally agree with you, Dr Sibanda or anyone for that matter must not be allowed to rewrite key historic facts such as MDC leaders sold out on reforms and on free, fair and credible elections. Zimbabwe would not still be in this political mess of rigged elections if MDC leaders had implemented the reforms when they are the golden opportunities to do so - that is a historic fact we do not want tampered with.

  6. @ Moses Nyika

It is the spinning for selfish financial or political gain that concerns me the most. If we cannot admit to ourselves that MDC leaders are corrupt, incompetent and they have sold-out on reforms then we are going to follow them blindly as they blunder from pillar to post.

Those who refuse to learn from the past are destined to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

Chamisa and company do not care about reforms and the holding of free and fair elections, this is fact we must accept and act upon. We cannot afford to bury our heads in the sand and pretend MDC leaders care about reforms whilst they continue to sell-out to Zanu PF on this very point by taking part in yet another flawed and illegal election.

  7. @ Mukwirivindi

This is not about Chamisa, MDC stopping the elections, how powerful Mnangagwa and the junta are, etc., etc. This is about these elections being free, fair and credible and the people of Zimbabwe finally having a meaningful say in who governs the country.

With no reforms in place these elections are not going to be free, fair and credible and MDC and the rest in the opposition should not be participating in these elections. Dr Sibanda is spinning insults in suggesting that Chamisa cares about free and fair elections, he just wants to string the nation along.

People must say it now and say it loud that these flawed elections are a mockery and they must be declared null and void!

  8. ZEC has just failed to produce a verified voters' roll, where in the world has it been possible to hold free, fair and credible elections with no verified voters' roll? In third world countries, with very weak public institutions organisations like the UN and their officials have always tended to side with the rich and powerful knowing no one will ever hold them to accord.

"We met with the head of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission [Priscilla Chigumba]. We were given a comprehensive briefing. An encouraging briefing," said U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Tayé-Brook Zerihoun. "Certainly there are issues to be handled and discussed. There is a positive pre-disposition - in my personal reading - in the way things are going. But at the end of the day the UN agenda is to help countries in their efforts to have as inclusive, transparent, free and fair elections as possible so that the outcome truly reflects the will of the people and therefore accept by all."

And you serious think that "these issues to be handled and discussed" can be meaningful resolved now six weeks before the elections when nothing has been done in the last five years? How naïve and gullible some of these buffoons can be!

After 38 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption that has pushed unemployment to the dizzying height of 90% and left ¾ of our people living on US$1.00 a day, Zimbabwe cannot afford another rigged election and more of this misrule. Buffoons like Tayé-Brook Zerihoun can afford to be naïve the people of Zimbabwe cannot!

  9. ZEC is obliged by law to produce a verified voters' roll a month before nomination day at the latest, ZEC cannot be selective in which laws the commission will follow and which it will ignore.

  10. With no reforms in place Zanu PF is set to rig these elections.

Zimbabwe is in this economic mess because for the last 38 years the nation was stuck with a regime that rigged elections to stay in power. The single most important issue before us therefore is to end this tradition of rigged elections.

The next government must be elected by the people in a free, fair and credible elections. If Zanu PF cannot keep its promise to hold free and fair elections then they must step aside and allow other who will.

    ReplyDelete
  11. MDC agree Zanu PF is rigging these elections and has been rigging elections in the past. SADC leaders are on record advising Morgan Tsvangirai and the other MDC leaders not to take part in rigged elections and yet they still di not want to listen.

Zanu PF people have already publicly admitted that they will not reform themselves out of office. In other words, they have the carte blanche powers to rig elections and they have no intention of giving up these powers.

By participating in flawed and illegal elections MDC are giving the process the modicum of credibility. Zanu Pf has learned that as long as they dangle a few gravy train seats they will have no problem of attracting the opposition to contest the flawed elections.

The key question is: When will MDC leaders stop selling-out and end their madness?

In the light of MDC intransgency the people of Zimbabwe are best advised to ignore MDC duplicity and demand that theseflawed and illegal elections must be declared null and void.

  12. MDC leaders are taking advantage of the ordinary Zimbabweans out there who, to this day, have failed to understand what the GNU was about much less that MDC leaders sold-out. So Dr Sibanda is airbrushing the historic facts of MDC's betrayal and portraying the same MDC leaders as the champions of the people fighting for free, fair and credible elections. As long as our people remain backward, always willing to follow the leaders no questions asked they will continue to be exploited by the very people claiming to have their best interests at heart.

Chamisa does not care that these elections are being rigged as long as he and a few of his friends get a cut of the spoils of power!
