Thank you very much Viniel Deredza for you thought-provoking
article, “Sanctions needed to achieve Zimbabwe reforms” in Bulawayo 24.
Zimbabwe is in a very serious situation with the economy in total meltdown,
unemployment at 90% and ¾ of the population living on US$1.00 or less a day,
and its political system in total shambles, Zanu PF has imploded and there is
total confusion in the opposition camp.
The economic mess cannot go on for another day, the tragic
human misery it is causing simply unacceptable. We can only have meaningful
economic reform if there are meaningful political reforms to allow free, fair
and credible election. Implement the reforms and you clean up the corrupt political
system that has allowed corrupt and incompetent leaders on both sides of the
political divided to emerge and dominate the political stage. If we want
quality leaders, at least with some common sense, then we must first drain the
swamp!
Deredza, you clearly understood the need for reform as the
key to ending Zimbabwe’s economic and political mess. You are right, most
Zimbabweans, especially the opposition, have completely fails to grasp the
critical important of making sure the reforms are implemented BEFORE the
elections.
You are right that President Mnangagwa has only paid lip
service to implementing the democratic reforms but that is to be expected.
Anyone who ever believed that Zanu PF could ever be transformed from the party
of corrupt, vote-rigging and murderous thugs into law abiding democrats by the
simple act of removing the dictator and a few bad apples around him, was naïve;
especially when the removal was more about succession than ideological
transformation. The regime’s failure to implement even one democratic reform has
cleared all the cobwebs in all with any common sense.
Deredza took to task the opposition for their failure to
push for reforms to be implemented.
“While Washington wants Harare to take that giant democratic
step to ensure free and fair polls, Zimbabwe's opposition political parties are
not demonstrating the strategic intent to achieve the same by engaging critical
blocks on the African continent and beyond,” argued Deredza.
“Ahead of the 2013 polls, the African Union (AU) had recommended reforms that Harare should have long introduced but none of them have been implemented.”
“Ahead of the 2013 polls, the African Union (AU) had recommended reforms that Harare should have long introduced but none of them have been implemented.”
For completeness, it should be noted that Southern African
Development Community (SADC) leaders did advised Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC
friends not to take part in the 2013 elections without first implementing the
reforms. “If you go into next month’s elections, you will lose; the elections
are done!” they warned.
“Without the opposition piling pressure on the AU and the SADC to take stock of recommendations made by the continental body in 2013, Western countries will find it difficult not to endorse a lopsided election that these African institutions would have endorsed, especially if Mnangagwa's government is able to at least conduct an election not marred by incidents of violence,” concluded Viniel.

Could not agree with you more! The failure by MDC leaders to
implement even one reform during the GNU and then rubbed in by ignoring SADC
leaders’ warding to postpone the elections until reforms are implemented must
have played on SADC leaders’ minds forcing them to accept the rigged elections.
If Zimbabweans themselves are not concerned that the elections are flawed and
illegal; why should outsiders care!
What is annoying here is that the opposition leaders KNOW
the consequences of taking part in these flawed elections, at least some of
them, like former MDC Senator David Coltart.
"The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a
coalition was that both MDCs couldn't now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,"
admitted Senator Coltart in his book.
"The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility."

"I am a devout Christian and I dedicate my victory to the Almighty God.
ReplyDeleteI am very active in the work of God and that is the secret behind my success," said the soft spoken Mazarire.
Are you sure it was not the promise of the new vehicle that motivated you to work so hard to win the Zanu PF nomination?
Zanu PF is still a party of thugs, it it had changed then why has the junta refused to implement the reforms to make sure the elections are free, fair and credible?
Chamisa: “the biggest logistical issue is the govt itself. The current mind in the current government is they want to treat their own citizens as foreigners. There is a constitutional challenge…we are going to fight…”
ReplyDeleteThis is nonsense, these MDC leaders had five years during the GNU to implement the raft of reforms designed to end Zanu PF dictatorship and they failed to get even one reform implemented. By participating in these flawed elections MDC are not helping to end the Zanu PF dictatorship but give the process credibility and thus help perpetuate it.
MDC is promising to fight for diaspora vote if they win the elections, they have failed to win any elections so far because Zanu PF rigs the elections. Chamisa keeps wittering about "stringent measures to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections" but will not say what these measures are! They are so secret he does not know them himself.
When are we going to come to our sense are demand the implementation of the reforms so there are free and fair elections? Chamisa is not going to win rigged elections, that is a simple fact!
“The ballot must be protected by the bullet, but what we are seeing is the bullet replacing the ballot….” said Chamisa.
ReplyDeleteSADC leaders want these outrageous vote rigging shenanigans put right in the raft of proposed reforms. MDC leaders failed to get even one reform implemented in five years of the GNU. SADC strongly advised MDC leaders not to go into the 2013 elections until the reforms are implemented and MDC leaders refused to listen. This year the Americans, Canadians and many local and international nations and individuals have all been calling for the reform to be implemented and it seems the only people who do not want the reforms is these corrupt and incompetent opposition politician.
It is none other than the opposition, in their foolishness and greed, who are stopping the implementation of the reforms so Zimbabwe can have free and fair elections at last!
You keep talking of wanting to see free and fair elections and yet have done nothing to achieve it. SADC have already said do not take part in the elections without first implementing the reforms. It is MDC who not only failed to get even one reform implemented during the five years of the GNU but are also the ones who keep frustrating all efforts to get the reforms implemented. MDC made a party resolution of "No reforms, no elections!" in 2014 and yet they are the one discarding their own resolution.
ReplyDeleteIt is one thing asking for free and fair elections but quite another to do something other than paying lip service to that sentiment.
It is a common mistake to see MDC leaders as the heroes fighting the Zanu PF dictatorship for the common people in Zimbabwe. When MDC tasted the sweetness of power especially during the GNU, they completely forgot about the common man.
"Mazivanhu eMDC adzidza kudya anyerere!" (MDC people have learnt to enjoy the benefits of life in the gravy training not rock the boat!) was the common remark in Zanu PF circles during the GNU. They were commenting on why MDC was doing nothing to implement the reforms.
After the rigged 2013 elections one SADC leader complained of how "MDC leaders had been busy enjoying being in the GNU and forgot why they were there!"
Ever since the GNU MDC leaders have seized to be the people's heroes because they since been working with Zanu PF if not as equal partners then as junior partners in crime! As long as MDC continue to participate in flawed elections they will give Zanu PF the smoke screen to frustrate efforts to get the free and fair elections.
You clearly were not listening because Chamisa talking of wanting free and fair elections and yet failed to say what MDC is doing to stop this circus. We are heading for yet another disputed elections.
ReplyDeleteFree, fair and credible elections is the holy grail of our generation and after 38 years of rigged elections we must now address this problem with the sense of purpose and urgency the matter demands. Enough of this wishy-washy "No reform, no election!" one day and the next "we have stringent measures to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections," etc.
Zimbabwe would have had free, fair and credible elections by 2013 at the very latest if MDC leaders had not sold out.
"I am inspired!" Inspired by what? With such simpletons it is no wonder the country is in a mess.
"We will also remind them that when the MDC had just a small amount of influence in government between 2009 and 2013 the economy grew dramatically, hospitals reopened, children went back to school and a new democratic Constitution was written and accepted by millions of Zimbabweans," you say.
ReplyDelete"In other words these are not empty promises, or mere rhetoric – we have a demonstrable track record. If we grasp the full reigns of government Zimbabwe will boom."
This is all very well but you cannot deny that MDC has failed to implement the democratic reforms necessary for free and fair elections. You lot had five years to implement the reforms and failed to get even one reform in place. With no reforms in place we are heading for yet another rigged elections!
"You (CIO) seem to be holding on to information because there is an understanding that the security sector looted diamonds, but you are failing to give us the information. Please stop being discreet because you seem to be playing intelligence with us. You need to remove the CIO hats and put on the hats of your roles at the diamond concessions because there are assertions that you looted," Mliswa warned.
ReplyDeleteIt is the task of the parliamentary committee to establish beyond all reasonable doubt that there was and still is very serious wholesale looting. Sadly, the looters are clearly getting away scot free because of the breath-taking incompetence of the MPs. Some of the questions the MP have been asking have left no one in any doubt just how incompetent the MPs are.
Unless we step up and demand the implementation of the democratic reforms, we are going to be stuck with mediocre leaders at best other corrupt and incompetent one. The present political system cannot produce competent leaders just like a polluted water system cannot produce quality fish.
What has Chamisa ever done of note for him to be compared to Nelson Mandela. The only thing of note Chamisa has done is to fail to get even one reform implemented in five years of the GNU.
ReplyDeleteThe trouble with empty heads like Stanley Manguma is they are bootlickers like some many in Zanu PF who even claimed Robert Mugabe was the second son of God only for him to turn out to be just another corrupt, vote-rigging and murderous tyrant!
“The new NELSON of Southern Africa, MDC Alliance Presidential Candidate Advocate Nelson Chamisa will be on BBC Hard Talk on Thursday Stay Tuned.
There is no doubt that Southern Africa has found a new Nelson,” wrote Manguma.
@ Blomefield
ReplyDeleteI agree that Manguma is just another Tony Gara of Zanu PF!
Zimeye is right to report these cases, the save the useful purpose of underlining Zimbabwe's fundamental problem of foolish leaders and sycophantic supporters!
Former USA ambassador Chris Dell once said Tsvangirai was a "flawed and indecisive character". He was right and Zimbabwe has paid dearly for it. The entire MDC leadership showed just how utterly useless they are during the GNU when they failed to get even one reform implemented in five years. And with such a sorrowful track record, how can anyone even mention Chamisa in the same sentence as Nelson Mandela!
True, President Mnangagwa is paying lip service to democratic reforms but then so is Chamisa and his MDC friends. To expect Zanu PF to carry out meaningful democratic reform is naive, to say the least. "Zanu PF is not going to reform itself out of office", as Professor Jonathan Moyo once put it.
ReplyDeleteFor the last four years Zanu PF have been in a dog-eat-dog fight over who should succeed Robert Mugabe but through it all they have all remained united on one thing - that Zanu PF must remain in power. The coup in November 2017 was over succession, as Professor Moyo has revealed in a recent article and not over reforming the dictatorship itself as President Mnangagwa and his junta would want us to believe.
It was Chamisa and his MDC friends who should have implemented the democratic reforms when they had the golden opportunity to do so during the GNU. They failed to get even one reform implemented in five years.
When SADC leaders realised that MDC had failed to implement any reforms, they told Mugabe to his face that they wanted the elections postponed so the reforms could be implemented. They warned MDC leaders "they would lose; the elections were done". Sadly, MDC leaders paid no heed because of greed, as MDC Senator David Coltart has since admitted.
"The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn't now do the obvious - withdraw from the elections," explained Senator Coltart.
If Chamisa and his MDC friends had done the honourable thing and implemented the reforms during the GNU Zimbabwe would have had free, fair and credible elections in 2013.
If Chamisa and his MDC friends had done the honourable thing and boycotted the July 2013 elections to press for reforms Zimbabwe would have had free, fair and credible elections later that year or the following year 2014.
If Chamisa and his MDC friends would do the honourable thing and boycott this year's flawed elections they would spare the nation the unnecessary expense of a totally meaningless elections.
Whilst MDC remains Zimbabwe's main opposition party with MPs and Senators, this is a historic fact what must be stated and understood is that they no longer represent the interests of the common people no more than Zanu PF itself does. MDC leaders stopped representing the people ever since the GNU days when they sold-out on reforms.
"My administration is not going to tolerate any form of corruption at any level. To do this, we need the support of other institutions: the police, judiciary, the anti-corruption commission and the National Prosecuting Authority, we are in the process of making them pull in one direction. Those we discover to be resisting, we are saying go home," the President said.
ReplyDeleteWhat about you? You are resisting all efforts to implement democratic reforms to ensure these elections are free, fair and credible. It is high time the nation looked you straight in the eyes and told you - GO HOME!
Zimbabwe is in this economic and political hell-hole because the nation has been stuck with a corrupt, incompetent and murderous regime for 38 years. Zanu PF has rigged the elections to stay in power. The idea that the removal of Robert Mugabe and a select few around him was enough to transform this ruthless dictatorship was a nonsense from the start. President Mnangagwa has proven beyond doubt that Zanu PF is indeed still a party of thugs by refusing to give up the party's carte blanche powers to rig elections.
Mr President, we do not care what you will or will not do after the elections; first things first we want these elections to be free, fair and credible. If you cannot deliver that, it seems you cannot, then these elections must be declared null and void. Zimbabwe will not do anything of substance until it has the problem of rigged elections sorted.
From now on Zimbabwe must have a government elected by the people in a free, fair and credible election! That is not negotiable!
SADC, the Americans and other outsiders are the ones demanding the implementation of the reforms BEFORE the elections. Zimbabweans and especially the opposition, do not seem to be even bothered that these elections are being rigged!
ReplyDeleteEver there was ever a time when ordinary Zimbabweans must stand up and denounce Zanu PF for riding roughshod over the people's freedoms, human rights and dignity that time is now. It is too late now to demand the implementation of the reforms to ensure free and fair elections, these flawed elections are going ahead. However, we can make it clear here and now that there elections are not going to be free and fair because no reforms were implemented and per se must be ruled null and void.
We must denounce the MDC for selling out on reforms and dragging the nation into these meaningless elections!
@ Chiremba
ReplyDeleteIt is all very well to say "the 2013 constitution is the mother of all reforms" the begging question is then why has it failed to deliver free and fair elections? Robert Mugabe "dictated" the new constitution, according to Paul Mangwana, the Zanu PF MP on the committee that wrote the new constitution, and that would explain why it has failed to deliver anything.
"MDC Alliance will in the near future roll out NERA type demos to force transparency around ballot paper printing and voters roll," you say.
We have known about these reforms for years, there is three months to voting day, what has the MDC Alliance been waiting for with their demos?
MDC have had many golden opportunities to implement the democratic reforms and get the nation out of this political mess and they have wasted them all. Right now it is SADC, the Americans and ordinary Zimbabweans like Wilbert who have been pushing for reforms to be implemented BEFORE elections and it is none other than these MDC fools who want the elections to go ahead with no reforms.
“Zimbabweans are at a place where they want to liberate themselves from several decades of autocratic evil and corrupt Zanu rule and will only entertain serious alternatives to the MDC Alliance Wilbert!” you say.
MDC Alliance is NOT going to liberate this nation; that is the point! Chamisa and company wasted their opportunity to implement the reforms during the GNU because they sold-out and, ever since, all they have been interested in is win the few seats Zanu PF has been giving away to entice the opposition to contest the flawed elections!
There is only reason one cannot see that MDC leaders are corrupt, incompetent and sell-outs even now with all the mountain of evidence before you – you have your head buried in the sand and refuse to see reason. This nation is not going to get out of this mess as long as the majority of the electorate remain naïve and downright stupid – like you!
