“Nkosana Moyo is the best
candidate to support and vote for in the 2018 presidential elections,” came Kuda
Bhejana resounding endorsement of Dr Moyo.
“President Bill Clinton’s
campaign strategist, James Carville coined the phrase, “It’s the economy,
stupid!”
“This is exactly the core
principle of Dr. Nkosana’s message. He emphasizes the strategy of using
government to create an economic environment which positions Zimbabwe as the
centre of business in Africa.”
Let me be absolutely clear from
the outset, I agree with Kuda 100% that Dr Nkosana Moyo would be infinitely
better as President of Zimbabwe than Robert Mugabe or any of Zanu PF candidates
fighting to be his successors.
If the truth be said, and it must
be said, Morgan Tsvangirai would have made a better President of Zimbabwe than
Mugabe. One has only to see the difference MDC’s presence made during the GNU to
the country’s economic standing. As soon as Zanu PF retained its full
tyrannical control again after the 2013 elections, overnight, the country’s
economic decline returned.
Yet regardless of Tsvangirai’s stand
head and shoulders higher rating compared to Mugabe, the MDC leader lost the
July 2013 election to Mugabe because winning elections in Zimbabwe has
absolutely nothing to do with the economy or voters. President Mugabe rigged
the vote.
“Mugabe stole the vote,”
complained Tsvangirai at the elections.
Of course, Mugabe rigged the
elections. We all saw the hooded Zanu PF youths who were bussed around casting
multiple votes; the nearly one million mainly opposition supporters who were
denied the vote because their person details were deliberately posted in some
other constituency voters’ roll other than the one they expected; etc.
The posting of details in wrong constituencies
was definitely a deliberate and calculated move by the regime because it then
followed this by stubbornly refusing to release the voters’ roll although it is
legally obliged to do so, a month before voting day. The regime did not want
the deliberate mistake of misplaced details discovered in time and corrected.
The regime has refused to release
the voters’ roll even to this day because it is the smoking gun to many of its
vote-rigging schemes.
Zimbabwe’s 2008 elections were a
watershed elections in that Zanu PF showed the world the range its vote-rigging
schemes. Everyone, even the SADC and AU election observers who are renowned for
approving some dodgy elections, refused to accept President Mugabe’s claim that
the 2008 elections were free and fair. SADC forced President Mugabe to agree to
the implementation of a raft of reforms designed to stop his vote rigging.
A GNU composed of Zanu PF and the
two MDC factions was formed and given the task of implementing the reforms.
Sadly, at the end of the GNU not even one reform had been implemented.
With not even one democratic
reform in place it was clear Zanu PF would just use the same vote rigging
tricks it had used in the 2008 elections; that was obvious. SADC leaders warned
Tsvangirai and his MDC friends not to contest the 2013 elections with no
reforms in place. As we know, MDC leaders did not listen and it was very
foolish of them not to listen; as we know Zanu PF went on to blatantly rig that
election, as noted above.
It is a great pity that MDC
leaders were breathtakingly corrupt and incompetent, they failed to implement
the democratic reforms. Still there is absolutely nothing to be gain by
contesting elections knowing fully well that Zanu PF will rig the vote.
Indeed, there is a heavy price to
be paid by contesting. Zanu PF will rig the vote and retain to power and the
nation will suffer the consequence of another five years of corrupt and
tyrannical rule. But worse still by participating in the flawed elections we
forfeit the chance to get the reforms implemented and thus end the dictatorship
and move on, as David Coltart acknowledged in his book.
“The worst aspect for me about
the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious
– withdraw from the elections,” explained Senator Coltart.
“The electoral process was so
flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would
compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the
MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain
in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”
You, Bhejana, and Dr Moyo should
know that not even one democratic reform was implemented since the rigged July
2013 elections. It is therefore midsummer madness of the worst order to contest
next year’s elections knowing fully well that Zanu PF will blatantly rig the
vote.
You and Dr Moyo can write volumes
of how sound his economic policies are but they are as useless to the nation as
a mirage to one dying of thirsty! Dr Moyo must win the election first for him
to implement even one of his policies; an impossible fit given Zanu PF rigs the
vote!
Dr Moyo is no more than a
migrating herd of wildebeest whose mind is so focused on the sweet grass on the
other side of the river the herd will ignore the immediate danger of the flood
river, the steep river banks, the swarming crocodiles, etc. It will take the
death of a hundred or more individuals before it finally dawns on the herd that
it is too dangerous to cross at that point or time. The more savvy zebra will
have the good sense to find another cross point or wait for the flood water to
go down.
Zimbabwe is in a real serious political
and economic mess, we know the country has the potential to be a rich and
prosperous nation but has failed to do this these last 37 years because Zanu PF
has been rigging the elections. We are stuck with this corrupt, tyrannical and
vote rigging regime.
SADC leaders have spelt it for us
what we need to do, “DO NOT CONTEST THE ELECTIONS UNTIL YOU IMPLEMENT THE
REFORMS DESIGNED TO STOP ZANU PF RIGGING THE VOTE!” Common sense really!
It is madness to keep contesting
the flawed elections and expecting a different result. That too, is common
sense!
For all his many university
degrees, PhDs and all his working experience with world renowned institutions
and companies, his time as cabinet minister, etc., etc. it is clear that Dr
Moyo does not have the most important quality that all our current crop of
leaders have lacked – common sense.
Many Zimbabweans were very pleased to see Dr Moyo take an active interest in Zimbabwe politics. He knew his stuff and was articulate and logical; a breath of fresh air from the riff-raff who have crowded the Zimbabwe political stage.
ReplyDeletePeople were disappointed, however, when Dr Moyo announced that he was going to contest next year’s elections knowing fully well that with no reforms in place the elections would be rigged. Some have gone so far as to accuse Dr Moyo of being “a Zanu PF project”, introduced to give the lacklustre elections because of the discredited opposition so fizz. Zanu PF needs the election to be seen to be a race or else the party risks losing legitimacy.
Whilst one can see the need to explain the folly of contesting a flawed election to a simpleton like Joice Mujuru or Morgan Tsvangirai. Dr Moyo is not a simpleton.
Smart individuals like David Coltart, Biti and Ncube could see the foolishness of contesting flawed elections they have been contesting regardless because of greed. They are smart enough to know Mugabe will not want to win all the gravy train seats after the blunder of the 2008 elections when the tyrant over played his vote rigging, lost legitimacy and was forced to go into the GNU. Coltart and company do not mind that Zanu PF rigs the vote as long as they get those few gravy train seats.
Dr Moyo is smart enough to know Zanu PF will rig the vote he is contesting to make a political name for himself or is paid by Zanu PF to do so. Either way anyone with any brain is bound to be disappointed in him, naturally!
President Mugabe has stifled all meaningful debate and exchange of ideas at all levels in society from top; those in parliament and cabinet, no wonder Margaret Dongo dismissed Zanu PF leaders as “vakadzi vaMugabe” (Mugabe’s captive subservient sows) They are there to be seen and not heard and to rubber stamp everything Mugabe wants and demands. The situation is even worse at the bottom were the down trodden povo have lost all their freedoms and human rights including the right to free, fair and credible elections and even the right to life! humanity.
DeleteIt is sad that even the opposition politicians have adopted themselves to fit the straitjacket society President Mugabe has crafted. Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends did not implement any reforms because, for all their huffing and puffing about bringing democratic change, as soon as they got into the GNU they all soon took their place as just one of the captive sows there to breed and be fattened.
Dr Moyo knew and understood what it meant to work in President Mugabe’s government, he was a cabinet minister. He resigned his post because he found the environment stifling as the only voice to be heard was that of Mugabe and everyone was expected to carry out the tyrant’s orders no questions asked regardless how stupid the order happened to be.
Dr Moyo’s presidential bid is more about fighting for his ideas to be heard without challenging the whole Zanu PF dictatorship. Dr Moyo does not mind that the elections will be rigged as long as he smuggles himself into the harem as the Mugabe concubine with the right to implement his economic policies.
Of course, Dr Moyo is being naïve, to say the least, because Mugabe will never want to give anyone else a meaningful say. He has established and retain this stifling dictatorship all these years precisely because he is a control freak megalomania. Now with his regime imploding he has become paranoid about control and hanging on to power.
To assume that Zimbabwe elections are about economic policies, “It is the economy, stupid!” is itself stupid. In a country were elections are rigged and thus those concerned about the economy have no say on who rules the country, any debate on the economy is a distraction of no consequence. The only fight worth the candle is the fight to stop the vote rigging because until that is settled nothing else matters. If Dr Moyo does not have the common sense to see this then he is certainly not material to hold public office much less the highest office in the land.
In his epic tale, Inferno, Dante passes through the gate of Hell, which bears an inscription ending with the famous phrase "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate", most frequently translated as "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here."
To paraphrase and twist Dante’s divinely inspired sentiment to suit our current needs, we must have the following inscription at the gate into State House: You must have common sense; Ye who enter here. Est enim sensus communis vobis; voi ch'intrate.
A party statement circulated to PDP structures by party secretary general Godern Moyo Friday suggested the PDP was worth more than what is has been allocated by way of seats to contest for. Reports also indicated the PDP was demanding 53 seats countrywide anchored on the 21 seats previously held by members recalled by Tsvangirai in the mayhem that characterised the 2014 split.
ReplyDelete"The party also resolved that an acceptable agreement shall be one that will give a majority of our MPs and councillors a fighting chance in accordance with our party constitution," Moyo said.
PDP, MDC-Ncube and all these other opposition parties are in the coalition for one thing and one thing only - a share of the give away gravy train seats.
@ Osama
ReplyDeleteMDC leaders did not contest the 2013 elections because they care about “free Zimbabwe from Zanu PF”. They knew Zanu PF was going to rig the vote and win; the reason why MDC leaders still contested the elections regardless was to win the few seats they knew Zanu PF would be giving away. David Coltart admitted this in his book.
“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” explained Senator Coltart.
“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”
With no reforms in place Zanu PF is set to rig next year’s elections too. The opposition parties are meeting to agree on how the few give-away seats are to be shared out. If they cared about free, fair and credible elections and ending the Zanu PF dictatorship then no opposition candidate will be contesting next year’s elections.
Zanu PF has been rigging elections for 37 years and still you want to contest flawed elections hoping that the result will be different – that is madness. The real shame here is that there should still be Zimbabweans out there who have their heads buried in the sand and thus fail to see the sheer stupidity of it all.
