Ever since President Mugabe
came into power following Zanu PF’s 1980 election victory, he has
systematically undermined the country’s democratic institution and eroded the
people’s individual freedoms and basic human rights to create and retain the de
facto one-party, Zanu PF, dictatorship. By the late 1990s the nation had
reached a consensus that President Mugabe was a corrupt, vote rigging and
murderous tyrant and for the need for far reaching democratic changes to end
the dictatorship.
Morgan Tsvangirai and his
friends founded their political party to champion the nation’s popular cry for
democratic change and named their party the Movement for Democratic Change
(MDC) to capture this popular sentiment. The party was launched in 1999. Over
the years, the people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect Morgan
Tsvangirai and his colleagues into political office so that they can bring
about the desperately need political change.
Millions of Zimbabweans have
been lost their property, harassed, beaten, and/or raped and over 500 were
murdered in the wanton violence of the 2008 elections alone.
The people’s sacrifice has
paid off as they have managed to elect MDC leaders into political office. The
return on their treasure, life and limb investment has been a great disappointment.
MDC have failed to deliver even one democratic change although they have had
many opportunities to make good on their promise to bring about democratic
change.
The best chance to delivery
change was during the 2008 to 2013 GNU when all MDC had to do was to implement
the democratic reforms agreed in the GPA and underwritten by SA’s President
Thabo Mbeki on behalf of SADC, the guarantor of the agreement. MDC leaders
failed to get even one reform implemented because President Mugabe bribed them
with the trappings of high office and, in return, they kicked the reforms into
the tall grass.
Many Zimbabweans blame SADC
leaders for the GNU’s failure to deliver any democratic change. The truth is
SADC leaders did their best to remind Tsvangirai and company to implement the
reforms but were ignored. Indeed, SADC leaders condemn the MDC leaders “for
enjoying themselves during the GNU and forgetting why they were there,”
according to a report in The Independent newspaper.
It was SADC leaders who
warned Tsvangirai & co. of the futility of contesting election with no
reforms in place. They argued that the 2013 elections must be postponed until
the reforms are implemented. And one sure way of forcing Zanu PF to postpone
the elections is for the opposition to refuse to take part.
“Of course, they (elections) can
be postponed,” explained Dr Ibbo Mandaza, in an interview with Violet Gonda.
“In 2013 the Maputo Summit, in June 2013, before the elections, the Maputo
Summit was all about having the elections postponed – the SADC summit.
“I went there. I was there at
the Summit and Mugabe pretended to agree to a postponement of the elections. If
you recall, the postponement was based on the need to reform at least electoral
laws.
“And after that Summit,
Morgan Tsvangirai, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube, all of them were called to a
separate meeting by the Heads of State of SADC in the absence of Mugabe, that
same evening. And they were told; I was sitting there outside the room with Mac
Maharaj; they were told ‘If you go into elections next month, you are going to
lose; the elections are done’.”
As we know, MDC leaders
ignore SADC leaders’ warning and participated in the elections. We also know
that, as SADC leaders had rightly predicted, Zanu Pf went on to blatantly rig
that elections. It is David Coltart who has spelt out in black and white why
MDC disregarded the warning and contested the flawed elections.
“The worst aspect for me
about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the
obvious – withdraw from the elections,” explained Senator Coltart.
“The electoral process was so
flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would
compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the
MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would
remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”
If anything, the blatant easy
with which Zanu PF rigged July 2013 elections has only served to underline the
futility of contesting elections with no reforms. If MDC leaders would put
aside their selfishness that stopped them implementing the reforms, then
contesting the flawed July 2013 elections, etc. and revisit their original
promise to deliver democratic change; they will admit that contesting flawed
elections constitute treasonous betrayal of the common people.
MDC leaders are determined to
contest next year’s elections, flawed and illegal as they clearly are, and the
fight over the few gravy train seats is hotting up! The recently launched MDC
Alliance is all about how those few gravy train seats Zanu PF gives away are to
be shared.
The smaller opposition
parties like Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube’s parties are keen to have the
Alliance as it is their only hope of winning some electoral seats. Members of MDC-T,
the bigger opposition party in the Alliance, will have to give up their chance
to contest to allow candidates from the smaller parties to contest. This is
something party members are resisting especial MDC-T VP Thokozani Khupe and her
colleagues.
"In terms of Clause 3(c)
of the Composite Political Co-operation Agreement, the party which is strongest
electorally in a given constituency must field the candidate for the coalition.
It is for this reason that we are against the allocation of the seats that have
been allocated to other coalition partners from Bulawayo, Matabeleland South
and Matabeleland North. We are certain that the party is strongest electorally
in these provinces . . . ," said a top MDC-T official in the Khupe camp.
"More specifically, we are concerned about the formula or method that has been used to come up with the distribution. Precisely, because mathematically, the party has given away 45,7% of the parliamentary seats and remained with 54%.
"Our concern is that even if the party is to win all the contested seats, it may not achieve outright majority presidential victory."

"Our concern is that even if the party is to win all the contested seats, it may not achieve outright majority presidential victory."
This lot knows the elections
will not be free, fair and credible; many voters will be denied the vote by
hook and by crook by ZEC failing to register them or corrupting the voters’
roll, many rural voters will once again be frogmarched to vote for Zanu PF,
etc. They do not give a damn how flawed and illegal the electoral process has
become. They will continue to contest, just to win the few gravy train seats
Zanu PF gives away.
If the people of Zimbabwe
still care about democratic change, they should because that is their only
ticket to end the economic meltdown that has forced millions into a life of
abject poverty and despair, then there is need for the nation to reach a new
national consensus. The 1990s consensus was that the country needed democratic
changes to end Zanu PF’s corrupt, vote rigging and tyrannical rule. The new
consensus is that Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends will never deliver the
democratic changes the nation has been dying for. And it is folly to continue
to support and follow MDC.
But most important and of
immediate demand is the need for the nation to reach a consensus on the need to
stop participating in flawed elections. We do not need SADC or anyone else to
tell that, without reforms, Zanu PF will blatantly rig next year’s elections;
we can see that for ourselves. And the obvious solution here is to nothing to do
with these flawed elections and demand the implementation of reforms BEFORE
elections!
The opposition has longer forgotten that the people elected them to deliver democratic changes including free, fair and credible elections. Tsvangirai and friends know that without reforms there is no hope of the elections being free, fair and credible. They do not care that the elections are not free as long as they win a few of the gravy train seats. The fighting for the few seats is what is going on here!
ReplyDeleteThe Namibia government is letting go Zimbabwean engineering expatriates seconded there on a government-to-government agreement.
ReplyDeleteThis comes ahead of the expiry of a five-year Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) signed between the two nations in 2012.
The Namibian government last week appeared to be giving in to pressure from militant labour groups there, which besieged government offices demanding the immediate repatriation of Zimbabwean nationals based there.
It never rains but pours! These Zimbabweans are returning home to a country in a worse economic situation than it was in when they left five years ago. These people will have to think of finding a job in some other country and not Zimbabwe. There are not many countries out there who will welcome them. Indeed, there is talk of SA sending back 220 000 Zimbabweans working in that country whose work permits are expiring end of this year.
Zimbabwe’s economic nightmare is of our own making.
Zimbabwe is in a serious economic mess follow 37 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption. These are man-made problems, we have allowed Mugabe and his Zanu PF thugs drag us into this mess, and now we are paying dearly for it.
Now that these Zimbabwean professionals are being forced to think of the nightmare of the economic chaos back home, one hopes that they will be forced to sit up and think how the country is going to end this mess. The solution is staring us all in the face; we need to implement the democratic reforms if we are ever to remove this corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship.
Mugabe’s boys are going back to SA for their studies.
ReplyDeleteMugabe boasts of Zimbabwe's 20 or so universities and yet none of the are good enough not only for his own sons but any of the Zimbabweans who can afford to send their children outside the country. The quality of education at Zimbabwe's education institutions have all gone down the tube because of the decades of chronic under funding.
It is scandalous that whatever Mugabe is squandering on his boys' accommodation and food, travel back and forth and these wild parties they hold regularly, all paid for by the taxpayers, is more that the regime is spending on some of the local Universities with 1000 students! What a criminal waste of the nation’s treasure and, most important of all, human talent and lives!
In all fairness, the developments will not only drain their energy and weaken the opposition forces at a time Zimbabweans are waiting to be rescued in the face of a Zanu PF onslaught as the ruling party seeks to retain power at all cost, and the declining economy
ReplyDeleteThe coalition will not change anything, this is just a waste of time, fishing for the proverbial red herring.
In 2013 elections the opposition united and Mugabe got 62% of the vote and so even if Tsvangirai had been the only opposition candidate he would have got 38% of the vote.
If one accepted that Mugabe rigged the election then one has to ask what have the opposition done to stop him rigging next year’s elections? Sadly, the answer is nothing. They have failed to implement even one reform to stop the vote rigging. The coalition is not doing anything to stop the vote rigging.
@Tapiwa Gomo
ReplyDelete“It is not uncommon for an African leader to blame the lack of development of their countries on Western countries. Everything about their failure is blamed on someone or something foreign. That they have lacked foresight is never part of their confession narrative. It is never their fault,” you said.
I could not agree with you more.
To fast forward this problem of a leadership that lacks vision and are always looking to blame others for their own incompetence, look at Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends. The people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect them into office on the ticket they will implement the democratic reforms necessary to end the Mugabe-Zanu PF dictatorship. They have failed to get even one single reform implemented in their 17 years in politics, five of which they were in government.
MDC leaders and their naïve supporters have been blaming SADC for the GNU’s failure to get even one reform implemented. In fact, it was SADC leaders tried to remind Tsvangirai and company to implement the reforms but were ignored.
SADC leaders also warned MDC not to contest the 2013 elections with no reforms but, again, their wise advice fell on deaf ears. Right now MDC leaders are dragging the nation into next year’s election although not even one reform has been implemented. Last week MDC was calling for SADC to make sure the elections are free and fair.
“We would like to call upon SADC to do whatever is within its power to ensure that next year’s elections in Zimbabwe be held in a free and fair environment that will guarantee a credible outcome,” said Obert Gutu, MDC-T spokesman.
With no reforms in place, Zanu PF will rig the elections; guaranteed. No doubt MDC would be blaming SADC for not doing enough to stop Zanu PF rigging the vote. How typical!
@SK
ReplyDelete“Mujuru can be perceived as any other heavyweight that left Zanu-PF with intention to make a difference on the political landscape. Examples that quickly come to mind are Edgar Tekere, Simba Makoni, Dumiso Dabengwa and Margaret Dongo. These gained fame under the stewardship of Zanu-PF and were denuded to political dust-bins,” you said.
“Their relevance and possible contribution to national interest was rubbished by the electorate which denied them the vote.”
There is something fundamentally wrong with that statement, it assumes that Mugabe has been holding free, fair and credible elections; which is a lie. Mugabe has never held free, fair and credible elections in his whole political career. One of the things this generation owns to itself, history and posterity is to institute a thorough investigation into Mugabe’s vote rigging past and establish the facts beyond all reasonable doubt.
We already know that Mugabe has been rigging elections but we need to establish the facts beyond doubt.
So, if Mugabe has been rigging elections to say the electorate rubbish anyone is a lie just as it is a lie that the same electorate loved Mugabe. Mugabe has systematically denied the Zimbabwe electorate a democratic voice.
Zimbabwe’s economic decline started soon after independence and has got significantly worse over the years but especially after the violent of the white owned farms in 2000. The root cause of the economic decline is the criminal waste of material and human resources due to gross mismanagement, rampant corruption and the flood of breathtakingly myopic and foolish policies pursued by the Zanu PF government. Today the Zimbabwe economy is in total ruins, unemployment has soared to nauseating heights of 90% plus and millions of our people now live in abject poverty.
ReplyDeleteZimbabweans are today the poorest nation on the planet; that speaks volumes on how far we have fallen.
Back in 1980, Zimbabwe had the potential to build on the strong and robust economic infrastructure is inherit from the outgoing white colonial regime to be one of the richest nation in Africa; the South Korea of Africa. Sadly, decades of misrule has turned us into impoverished nation with pompous leaders who hide their glaring failures as leaders behind a razor sharp tongue; always picking a fight wherever they go. We have become the North Korea of Africa.
Zimbabwe is not the only country that has faced serious economic problems; there is the 1929 to 1939 Great Economic Depression affecting America and the rest of the developed countries, Japan and Germany lay in total ruins at the end of the WW2, etc. All these countries recovered and so can we.
So far we have not shown any sign of digging ourselves out of the hell-hole Mugabe’s rule has landed us, we have been stuck in this hell-hole for 37 years and counting; because we are stuck with the corrupt and tyrannical regime. As long as this corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF regime remains in power we are going nowhere!
To give ourselves a fighting chance of ending the mismanagement, the corruption and economic madness behind economic meltdown we must dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship and replace it with a democratic system of government. Nothing of any substance can ever be accomplished as long as the country remains in the iron grip of corrupt and utterly useless leaders whose continued rule is because they rig elections.
Implementing the democratic reforms BEFORE elections is the holy grail; we must not take our eyes off that ball, no matter what!
Tsvangirai is notorious for saying nonsense and is one such example.
ReplyDelete“This coalition is to stop fragmentation. Mugabe will have no excuse to rig (the election) if we are united,” he said at the formation of the MDC Alliance.
Only someone really stupid would believe that nonsense. Mugabe has been rigging elections ever since the country gain its independence in 1980 and he is certainly not going to stop now just because MDC and a handful of other opposition parties have come together to form a coalition.
Nothing has been done to stop vote rigging and if the coalition is to stop fragmentation then it will change little on the ground. In 2013 Mugabe won 62% of the vote a united opposition candidate would have won 38% of the vote and still lose.
Tsvangirai have failed to come up with anything to stop vote rigging and so there is nothing to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections again. It is madness contesting flawed elections and expect a different result. The people of Zimbabwe must demand the implementation of the democratic reforms BEFORE elections and refuse to have anything these flawed elections.
MDC Alliance to be launched in Bulawayo.
ReplyDeleteThe MDC Alliance is about how to few gravy train seats Zanu PF gives away are to be shared out. Elections should be about citizens having a meaningful say in the governance of the country and so MDC have sold-out on this point just as they sold-out during the GNU by doing nothing to implement the reforms.
By contesting flawed elections we are giving Zanu PF the excuse to refuse to implement the reforms because by the act of contesting we are giving the process credibility.
If Zimbabweans are serious about getting democratic change then we must demand the implementation of the democratic reforms and refuse to have anything to do with these flawed elections.
President Mugabe's corrupt and tyrannical regime is notorious for being wasteful of the country's vast material and human resources. The country is truly blessed in have such gems as diamonds and people like Chibebe but cursed in having some of the most corrupt, incompetent and utter useless leaders in the world.
ReplyDeleteIt is not surprising that Zimbabweans are today the poorest people on earth and, I would not be surprise to hear, has the richest and most wasteful ruling elite in the world too!
We have a chance to demand reforms and ensure free and fair election, only then can we be 100% certain of finally removing the corrupt, tyrannical and vote rigging Zanu PF from office. We have failed to do this in the past because we made the mistake of contesting elections without taking the precaution of implementing the reforms first and Zanu PF has rigged the vote again and again.
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result," said Albert Einstein.
After 37 years of rigged elections, repeated warnings not to contest the elections with no reforms from SADC and other, seeing how Zanu PF is already going through its vote rigging gears for ourselves, etc. I have a sickening feeling that Zimbabweans, led like sheep to the slaughter by our corrupt and incompetent opposition politicians, will be going into next year's elections expecting a different result!
Talk of being a cursed nation, what could possibly be worse than being a nation in which the overwhelming majority are mentally challenged, certified insane. Poor, poor Zimbabwe; for here is a nation that has proven beyond all doubt that it is incapable of self-government. We have become our own worst enemy with a knack for shooting ourselves in the foot or worse!
