Canceling CCC congress will not only "keep infiltrators stewing" but citizens and democracy itself too W Mukori

“KEEP THEM GUESSING & TOSSING, STEWING & ROASTING! THROW THEM OFF BALANCE … Remember they infiltrate, manipulate and capture using 4 things ..1.Structures 2. internal Processes 3. Law-fare 4. Ambitious/hungry characters. Be so unpredictable so they can do nothing but assume.” Twittered Nelson Chamisa.

He was in reply to calls for CCC to hold primary elections elect candidates for the upcoming 2023 elections. A few weeks ago, he similarly dismissed calls for the party to launch its constitution and hold a party congress to elect the leaders giving the same reason – he is fearful of infiltration.

When Chamisa launched the party in January 2022, he insisted it was not rebranding MDC Alliance because the Citizens Coalition for Change was a democratic and people’s party as the name implied. What does a people’s party mean?

It was the Greeks who proposed democracy as a system of government in which the citizens themselves instituted the rules governing how society would live, enforced the rules and for their own benefit. Hence the reason democracy is defined as government of the people, by the people and for the people.

The greatest threat to democracy comes from within as human history would testify. It is irrelevant how one got into a position of power and authority but having got there they primeval instinct is secure power for themselves. Even those who had praised the merits of democracy and even benefit from the system will suddenly develop the jitters concerned by the consequence of ordinary people making key decisions.

Of course, the Greeks too were concerned the dangers of democracy producing an amateur government. And, instead of the country excelling in every field of human endeavour as Greece did, the Golden Age; see the country dragged into misery or worse because of the mediocre governance. The resolved to save themselves from amateur government in two ways;

1)     First and foremost, they placed great emphasis on the need to educate all their citizens and what better vehicle to achieve that than freedom of the individual, freedom of expression, open debate and meritocratic competition – the essence of the Olympic games.

2)     Second, no one individual or group was ever entrusted with absolute power and authority and, even when, for whatever reason, someone was granted or seized absolute power, the whole society was restless to have power restored the back to the rightful owners – the people.

For all Chamisa’s claims that CCC is a people’s party he is clearly hell bent in ensuring that it is not by adopting the very measures that would make it a people’s party. When the Greeks wanted citizens   educated Chamisa is busy stifling all discuss and debate. The decision not to hold the party’s congress was made by him alone as there is nothing to suggest even the interim leadership was consulted.

Zimbabwe is in this political and economic mess precisely because the country has had the great misfortune of have political leaders with not aa drop of democratic blood in the veins. Mugabe stifle debate and competition at a party level and surrounded himself with utterly useless individuals who said nothing when the dictator pursued voodoo economic policies and even when he committed such heinous crimes as Gukurahundi massacre.

At a national level Mugabe imposed the de facto one party dictatorship that stifle all debate and democratic competition driving away all quality men and women out of politics and hence the country’s political paralysis. There are no quality leaders in both the ruling party and the opposition.

As much as Nelson Chamisa would want to claim to be a democrat, his track record tells its own different story. By stopping party elections and congress you are not only keeping infiltrators stewing and roasting most important of all the citizens too!

Just as a good tree cannot bear bad fruit and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. So far there is nothing in CCC to suggest it is a citizens’ party, a people’s party. Nothing!

  1. “Mnangagwa narrowly won the disputed election that Chamisa's camp claimed were rigged by the Zanu-PF regime allegedly working closely with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec)!”

This is utterly meaningless given that there is accepted evidence presented and accept the Constitutional Court itself showing there were 16 Polling Station totals in which the votes casts for each candidate, spoilt votes, etc. were exactly the same for two or more stations. The other thing is I all these cases Mnangagwa garnered more votes than the others. It is not rocket science that these were double, or triple entry of the one Polling Stations.

We all know that Zimbabwe’s judiciary is not independent and therefore comes as no surprise that the court noted the 16 identical Polling Station totals and ignored the obvious implications. It should be remembered that the one of the High Court judges, George Chiweshe, has ruled on the November 2017 military coup as “justified, legal and constitutional!”

The 16 Polling Station double and triple entries showed that Chamisa was not going to win the election and so it is nonsensical to pretend Mnangagwa “narrowly” won! It would be more appropriate to say Mnangagwa “had to win come rain come sunshine!”

  2. We don't need the EU to remind us Zanu PF rigged the 2018 elections and that, with no reforms, the party will rig the 2023 elections too.

Nelson Chamisa participated in the 2018 elections knowing fully well that Zanu PF was rigging these elections and, worse still, knew that by participating MDC A was giving Zanu PF legitimacy. MDC A participated regardless because they were after the few gravy train seats Zanu PF was offering to entice the opposition.

Nelson Chamisa is hell bent on participating in the 2023 elections knowing fully well Zanu PF is rigging and that the price to the nation of participating is giving Zanu PF legitimacy. He is after the few gravy train seats plus the honour of being called leader of the main opposition.

No doubt Chamisa will make a big song and dance about Zanu PF rigging the 2023 elections just as he did after the 2018 elections. No doubt the naïve and gullible public will be touched forgetting the real victim of this madness are the ordinary Zimbabweans who remain stuck with this Zanu PF dictatorship and suffer the economic and political consequences that entails.

How long are we going to allow this madness Zanu PF blatantly rigging elections and getting away with it thanks to the convince of the corrupt and sell out opposition?

  3. REVELATIONS Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, currently in Indonesia, will hold talks with an arms manufacturing company to buy military hardware for Zimbabwe have sent shivers down the spine of the main opposition forces, amid fears that weapons are being prioritised on the eve of general elections to crackdown on possible political unrest if the polls are rigged again.

PT Pindad sells a host of lethal weapons, from sidearms to submachine guns, assault rifles, battle rifles, machine guns, sniper rifles, grenade launchers and armoured vehicles.

Zimbabwe had the golden opportunity to implement the democratic reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU that would have stopped Zanu PF using the Army, Police and CIO to carry out acts of violence for political gain. And without first implementing the reforms Zanu PF will continue to use deadly weapons for selfish political gain.

What is disappointing here is that it is not only Zanu PF that is not concerned that elections are going ahead with no reforms in place; the opposition to is not concerned. Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends were warned by SADC leaders in 2013 that Zanu PF would rig that year's elections and wanted the elections postponed until reforms were implemented. MDC completely ignored the warning.

By participating in these flawed elections MDC are giving Zanu PF legitimacy.

Why are the EU and other western nations ignoring the political reality that it is the MDC/CCC's continued participation in these flawed elections that are giving Zanu PF the confidence to ignore calls for reforms before elections

  5. This is the second time President Mnangagwa has attended the WEF, which attracts over 2 500 world leaders, presidents and chief executive officers of global companies.

On his last attendance in 2018, President Mnangagwa charmed the world with his "Zimbabwe is Open for Business" mantra, a promise that he has kept religiously in the country's quest to become an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

Studies by the African Development Bank show that increasing the stock of infrastructure by one percent can add up to one percent to Gross Domestic Product.

Mnangagwa’s “Zimbabwe is open for business!” mantra was premised on the ethos that the November 2017 military coup (like Putin, Mnangagwa insisted in calling it a military assisted transition just like Putin is calling the war of invasion of Ukraine a special military operation) has replaced the corrupt and tyrannical Mugabe administration with a democratic and competent one. The coup had transformed the closed pariah state in which it was near impossible to do business into a law abiding and competitive state “open” for business.

Of course, Mnangagwa was lying, the coup was about the internal struggle for dominance withing the party and not about transforming and ending the dictatorship. And so post November 2017, Zimbabwe remained a pariah state ruled by incompetent, corrupt and ruthless thugs who continued to rig elections to retain their strangle hold on power. Investors saw this and kept their distance and, it is little wonder, “Zimbabwe is open for business!” was dead in the water!

“Zimbabwe is open for business!” was a lead balloon that never took off back in 2018 and it is sad to see Mnangagwa is back in Davos to relaunch the lead balloon!

    “Hello Nomusa,

So, are we saying that we should not hope for change from Chamisa or CCC if they are elected? Are you really sure that electing Chamisa will be tantamount to keeping Zanu PF in power?

If so what's your solution to the problems that we are facing today as a nation?”

Good questions and the kind the nation should be asking if we are ever to get out of this hell-hole we have landed ourselves in.

Zimbabwe had a golden opportunity to implement the democratic reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU and MDC failed to get even one reform implemented. Not one and hence the reason we are still stuck with the vote rigging Zanu PF.

Since the GNU debacle, Chamisa and company have accepted Zanu PF’s right to rig elections to retain its dominance fait accompli, they have given up the fight for reforms and free elections as a lost cause. All MDC/CCC are interested in now is how to force Zanu PF to increase their share of the spoils of power.

If we are serious about having free, fair and credible elections; the basis of a democratic, competent and accountable government; then we must fully implement the democratic reforms. There is no other way out.

We can get these 2023 flawed elections declared null and void and clearing the way for a new GNU. This time competent men and women must be appointed to implement all the democratic reforms! Every one of the reforms!
