ED's failure to secure "financial package scarred away investors" reported Guardian - quelea home to roost

President Mnangagwa and his cronies started singing the sing-song “Zimbabwe is open for business!” soon after last November coup; it was way too premature to do so. Zimbabwe was a pariah state ruled by well-established and deeply entrenched corrupt, vote rigging and ruthless dictatorship; dismantle it was never going to be easy. Removing the top dog, Robert Mugabe, and a select few around him was a good start but not enough to justify the “new dispensation” claim.
Mnangagwa promised to hold free, fair and credible elections and yet he stubbornly refused to implement any democratic reforms to make this possible. By blatantly rigging the 30 July 2018 elections, he confirmed; even to those still naïve to believe to “new dispensation” propaganda; that Zimbabwe was still a pariah state. No investor would want to do business with thugs!
“Although the elections in July did not see the systematic violence of those under Mugabe, alleged irregularities during the count and violent repression following the vote have resulted in only lukewarm support for Mnangagwa and the ruling Zanu PF party from major international powers,” reported the Guardian.
“The fatal shooting by soldiers of seven unarmed civilians in Harare during opposition protests has made endorsement of the new government difficult, officials privately admit.”
“Catriona Laing, the outgoing British ambassador, told local reporters the United Kingdom was concerned by the August 1 shootings and hoped to see political reform.
“This has made the prospects of the multi-billion-dollar financial package needed to stave off economic collapse unlikely, which has in turn discouraged private investors.”
No political reforms can ever be implemented now to reverse the reality that Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by corrupt vote rigging thugs! The chicken have come home to roost in their millions like quelea birds! Even the British who have been bending over backward to prop up this Mnangagwa junta are now accepting that the regime is doomed to fail!
“China has proved unwilling to provide the immediate funds needed by Zimbabwe, citing concerns over the country’s ability to repay existing unpaid debts,” continued the Guardian report.
How typical! Before the elections, Mnangagwa boasted that he had signed several “mega deal projects worth billions of dollars” with the Chinese. Now that the elections are over the Chinese are saying the money would only be released if Zimbabwe paid outstanding loans first.
They did the same thing with Mugabe, strung him along with promises of mega deals only to demand repayment outstanding loans before any new loans could be activated! Mugabe hit back by booting the Chinese out of Chiadzwa diamond fields.
The Chinese are reportedly going back to Chiadzwa. They helped Mnangagwa rig and win the recent elections and going back to Chiadzwa was their pay back. So they will continue the wholesale looting of diamonds from where they left off!
“Manisha Singh, the US assistant secretary of State for economic and business affairs, told a House of Representatives hearing earlier this month that the new government has to demonstrate it is “changing its ways” before these (targeted sanctions imposed on Zanu PF leaders) can be lifted.
“Our pressure on Zimbabwe remains in place.
“We are trying to use this pressure to leverage political and economic reforms, human rights observations … We want to see fundamental changes in Zimbabwe and only then will we resume normal relations with them,” Singh said.
The pressure must now focused on forcing this Zanu PF junta to accept that it is illegitimate, having rigged the election, and must step aside to allow the appointment of an interim administration. The administration will be tasked to implement the democratic reforms in preparation for holding fresh free, fair and credible elections.
There is really no other way out of this mess other than having an interim regime. Zanu PF must not be allow remain in power for five years because it will only be presiding over total economic collapse and want to rig the next elections just to stay in power.

  1. President Kagame has over stayed his welcome! Leaders who think they alone are the ones competent to rule are dangerous. Mnangagwa has been in power for 37 years and has accomplished nothing other than rig elections and loot!

  2. @ Joice Tsitsi

What are you blabbering about, "Mnangagwa is making Zimbabwe proud again!" The trouble with you spin-doctors and apologists is that you believe your own lies so much so you fail to notice the audience are laughing at you and not with you!

Mnangagwa has just left a country in struggling to contain cholera because of 38 years of corrupt and inapt Zanu PF rule. Basic services like clean running water and health services have all but collapsed. Mnangagwa has just wasted one billion dollars at least in buying new cars alone for those helping him rig the elections. And a week before the cholera outbreak he is the one who authorized the chartering of a plane to fly Grace Mugabe from Singapore at a cost of $1.4 million.

The criminal waste of resources under Mugabe has continued under Mnangagwa; what is there to be proud of.

Mnangagwa had done most of the vote rigging and thuggery that kept Mugabe and Zanu PF in power all the 37 years. He has just blatantly rigged the 30 July 2018 elections. He had the chutzpah to claim the election were free and fair and yet failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters roll for Pete's sake!

"Watching the news, I was reminded of the following teaching of the holy Bible "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" (Psalms 133:1). Let me explain: The goal of the United Nations General Assembly is to gather all the political leaders of the world, peacefully and in good terms, so they can discuss and solve their problems in a civilised manner and work together on the prosperous development of all humanity. Unfortunately, history teaches us that too often, and especially in Africa, this has not worked out," you say.

Yeah right! Has Mnangagwa ever read the UN Declaration of Human Rights? He should know that the UN believe everyone has the right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country and has the right to life - rights he has routinely denied the people of Zimbabwe!

Mnangagwa rigged the recent elections, he is illegitimate and should not even been at the UN!

  3. The whole November 2017 coup was a pantomime written and performed by fools "full of sound and fury signifying nothing!" The wake Mugabe up at 4.00 am with a gun to his temple, have soldiers armed to the teeth occupying all the strategic institutions and even shoot at some of Mugabe's close allies and killed a few. Only to announce to the world "this is not a coup but a military assisted transition!"

The coup remove Mugabe and a few other G40 leaders but only a fool believed they were the only ones responsible for all the gross mismanagement, rampant corruption, vote rigging and thuggery that are the hallmarks of the dictatorship!

Instead of just Mnangagwa, the emperor, shouting "Zimbabwe is open for business!" we had the whole junta cabinet members, apologists and hanger-on joining in. Instead of just one naked, except for the colourful scarf, emperor, we had the whole entourage strutting on the world stage making complete fools of themselves.

After nearly a year now of shouting "Zimbabwe is open for business!" with not even one investor taking the bait even the most naive of the fools are beginning to accept that it is not working! The chickens are coming home to roost and in the millions! The pantomime has been a total failure; the public have voted with their feet, after a year of performing to empty chairs the truth of failure is self evident.

  4. In 1980 Zimbabwe was one of the top five richest nation in Africa, it has the resources and potential; the only reason the country is the poorest nation in Africa today is because of 38 years gross mismanagement and rampant corruption. Remove the corrupt and incompetent Zanu PF leaders are the country will thrive and prosper.

We are stuck with individuals like Mugabe and now Mnangagwa who simply refuse to accept that they have failed even in the face of the evidence of failure. What we need is a new political system in which the people have the political power to tell a leader they have failed and to remove him/her from office!

There is really no point in discussing what we should do to fix the economic when none of those ideas will ever see the light of day because an idiot like Mnangagwa is in power and has the power to impose his failed command agriculture policy!

  5. There is a sickening level of political naivety even by those claiming to be in the know like Dr Ruhanya. President Mnangagwa rigged the recent elections and not only because he denied those in the diaspora a vote but for a whole catalogue of other reasons. There was no free public media, there was no verified voters' roll throwing the door wide open to all manner of vote rigging, rural voters were herded like cattle by the Chiefs whose palms Mnangagwa has just greased with new twin cab Isuzu trucks, etc.

Mnangagwa rigged the elections and to take him off the illegitimate hook just because he has promised the diaspora vote is nauseating. Just how naive and stupid can some people be!

  6. USA leans on Zimbabwe over media and security law reforms.

Mnangagwa rigged the recent elections, the cardinal sin, no amount of media and security sector reforms can absolve from what he did. The man is illegitimate and the only way out is for him to step down to allow for the appointment of an interim administration that will implement the democratic reform and finally put an end to this culture of rigged elections. If Zanu PF is allowed to stay in power till the next elections in 2023 then we can be certain the regime will rig those elections too!
