Gukurahundi was a Zanu PF genocide and not a Shona supremacist agenda. W Mukori

“The Shona supremacist agenda that drove Zanu PF to commit the Gukurahundi Genocide continues to be the ethos of the party in 2026. Imagine if this was Bindura, Bikita or Chitakatira & Ndebeles were the only community voice that The Herald could find?

How would that be embraced by those communities? When Ndebeles say Gukurahundi continues up to this day, 46 years after the so-called independence this is what they mean. We're far from being an inclusive country that not only recognizes but respects ethnic diversity. Very far!” wrote Siphosami Malunga on X.

To confuse Zanu PF with Shona is worse than Zanu PF thugs confusing the party with the state!Whilst it is true that Gukurahundi targeted the Ndebele tribe more than any other tribe and it help Zanu PF thugs to impose the de facto one party dictatorship that has ruled the roost to this day. It is nonsense to even suggest that the Shona have benefited from the dictatorship.

Zimbabwe is a failed state precisely because the nation has been stuck with a corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical de facto one party Zanu PF dictatorship. Judging from the chaos and dog-eat-dog factional wars raging within Zanu PF itself it it would be tongue-in-the cheek to say Zanu PF has benefited from the one-party dictatorship. It would nonsense to suggest the Shona have benefited from the dictatorship and failed state!

Gukurahundi was never about disrespecting ethnic diversity, it was about party political dominance which, in the final analysis, is the primeval dog-eat-dog. If we are serious about ending the political and economic chaos and tragic human suffering Zanu PF has brought upon this nation then we must start by CORRECTLY identifying the root cause of the problem because failure to do so will meaning wasting time implementing the wrong solutions, at best!

At worst, we cause stir up tribal hatred and thus start Gukurahundi mark 2!There have been many political opportunists who have played the Gukurahundi and tribal car to bolster their political standing.

The late Dr Joshua Nkomo is on record saying the Gukurahundi massacre was NOT a Shona vs Ndebele struggle but a Zanu PF party seeking to impose a one party dictatorship by either eliminating PF Zapu, the only other political party stopping Zanu PF imposing a one party state. Or by forcing the party to unite with Zanu PF, which is what the 1987 Unity Accord accomplished.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, that has dominated the nation’s national agenda this last 3 years is not about the Shona nor is it about Zanu PF the party. People like VP Chiwenga are against it the amendment because it seeks impose Mnangagwa dominance in violation of the constitution at Chiwenga and his supporters’ expense! The Shona as with the rest of the nation has nothing to gain from the chaos and politic strive that will erupt from the passing of this obnoxious amendment!

Gukurahundi was more than “a moment of madness”, it was genocide committed by murderous megalomanias whose hunger for political power and wealth was and still is insatiable. It is equally important to say what Gukurahundi was not. It was not a Shona tribal supremacist agenda.

The people of Zimbabwe must be very careful they do not drag themselves into yet another meaningless conflict sparked this time by the failure to distinguish the sins of a few individuals and attributing them to millions who had nothing, absolutely nothing, to do do with the acts, gained nothing and have suffered the post genocide consequences like everyone else!

Zimbabwe has paid dearly for the nation’s failure to nip in the bud the recklessness hunger for power and disregard of other people’s rights, suffering and deaths in young Robert Mugabe, Emmerson Mnangagwa and many of those behind Gukurahundi. There is no doubt that these qualities did not emerge in 1983, there were there long before that. Our failure to send the culprits to prison were they belong a.s.a.p. has resulted in some of those going to State House instead!

Have we finally learned that there is a heavy price to be paid for failure to condemn blind ambition, lawlessness and contempt for the freedom and rights of others? Over 20 000 innocent Zimbabweans were murdered in cold blood during Gukurahundi and it resulted in the imposition of the de facto one party, Zanu PF dictatorship that has ruled the roost to this day. And 46 years and counting of the dictatorship is the root cause of Zimbabwe being a failed state and the nation sinking deeper and deeper into economic mess, political paralysis and millions living in abject poverty.

Well? Have we finally learned the lesson? Alas! Signs are, we have not learned the lesson and those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat the same mistakes and pay dearly for it yet again.

Gukurahundi was a Zanu PF orchestrated genocide and not "a moment of madness", as Mugabe would have it. Gukurahundi did not last a month or a year, it lasted five years. It was not a handful of people who died during the massacre; over 20 000 were murdered in cold blood. And, worst of all, the dog-eat-dog primeval drive to dominate behind Gukurahundi did not end with the signing of the 1987 Zanu PF and PF Zapu Unity Accord. The target changed but the formate and the goal remained.

Our failure to deal with the perpetrators has given those behind the lawlessness and violence to commit these heinous acts. Mnangagwa and Chiwenga orchestrated the 2008 Operation Mavhotera Papi and the nation should have send the two to prison and today the two are in State House, instead.

Still, to call Gukurahundi "a Shona supremacist agenda" is wrong, irresponsible and dangerous. Zimbabwe is a failed state, one of the consequences of the Gukurandi, the dictatorship, etc. Digging ourselves out of this mess and alleviating the suffering and deaths of our people is the greatest challenges before us. We should not compound the situation by misreading the past to create more problems for ourselves.

"Those who rigged Chamisa in 2018, engineered a sham “election” in 2023, enabled the recall of his MPs and gleefully crushed dissent have no right to tell him to fight much less dictating how to fight." said Thabani Mpofu.

Well! Well! This is real rich coming from the lawyer who has gone down in Zimbabwe legal history as the man who made a complete fool of himself in the country's highest court, Constitutional Court. By refusing to have the sealed ballot boxes of the 16 Polling Stations with "identical votes casts for Chamisa, for Mnangagwa, spoilt votes and most significantly were Mnangagwa was not just winning but winning big", Mpofu proved just how corrupt, incompetent and utterly useless he was!

If there was ever any doubt that the MDC/CCC leaders connived with Zanu PF to rigged the election - Mpofu's idiotic refusal to have the ballot boxes opened end the doubts!

Never mind! After 46 years of participating in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy, you still have no clue what is going on here! The spirit is willing but the intellect is weak!

What is the point of having election rules is the said rules are disregarded, you are warned that the rules were ignore and you still participate in the flawed process regardless?

    “Conclusion 13.3

The SEOM (SADC Election Observer Mission) noted that, as detailed in sections 6 and 7 of this report, some aspects of the Harmonised Elections fell short of the requirements of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the Electoral Act, and the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021),” stated the SEOM report.

“What would be the significant difference if the opposition boycotted this process?” Fcuk me!

You clearly do not understand what free and fair elections are about, in this day and age, and yet has the right to vote This is the equivalent of some one in High School asking the question one would expect from one in grade one. No wonder we are a failed state!

It is the reality and being angry with the reality will serve no purpose!

If some one in High School ask grade one questions, one does not bother answering because if the individual has not learned year one stuff in 13 years what hope is there they will learn it in one day much less in a few sentences on WhatsApp?

Leaders like Chamisa tell you idiotic lies and con you to participate in flawed elections time and time again because you have no clue that an idiotic lie is, what constitute flawed elections, etc., etc. You are who you are!

Thank for highlighting the tragic event in Africa and in Zimbabwe in particular.

You have asked why AU and SADC have been silent. They did help force Zanu PF to accept the 2008 to 2013 GNU whose number one task was to implement the democratic reforms to dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship. Not even one token reform was implemented. Mugabe bribes Tsvangirai & company.

Ever since the GNU debacle the opposition have participated in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy and perpetuate the dictatorship. The opposition have conned the people to participate with idiotic lies. Millions have believed the lies and participated. What did you want SADC and AU to do?

Did Chamisa lie about plugging vote rigging loop hole? What has asking that to do with “those who destroyed the country”? Are you saying we cannot hold Chamisa to account for lying about plugging vote rigging loop holes because he is not the one who “destroyed the country”?

Just because you do not have the intellectual capacity to deal with Chamisa lying and “those who destroyed the country” you should never assume that everyone else does not have that capacity.

The truth is you cannot bear to hear Chamisa taken to account for anything especially something you cannot dare to deny. Chamisa is a demigod who can do no wrong. You seek to defend him by talking about “those who are destroying the country”.

Guess what, by lying and conning millions to participate in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy and perpetuating the dictatorship HE, CHAMISA, is too destroying the country!

How is it possible that any one can still consider a mere mortal like Chamisa to be a demigod in this day and age, beggars belief. Poor Zimbabwe, we have millions of mentally challenged people and they have the vote!

“Chamisa hasi iye who destroyed the country!” So Chamisa has been doing the nation a great favour by lying and conning millions to participate in flawed elections to keep Zanu PF in power? The spirit is willing but the intellect is just too weak and feeble to sustain even one simple and coherent idea! The penny has not dropped given all the advantages of the 21st century. MDC/CCC leaders have not only failed to deliver even one token democratic change in 26 years and, worst of all, have conned the nation to participate in flawed elections, "so flawed, so illegal the only logical step is to withdraw", to perpetuate the dictatorship. The people themselves have been conned to participate in the flawed elections again and again because they have failed to realise that Chamisa & co. are corrupt, incompetent, liars and conmen!

Whilst some people have accepted that Zanu PF has been rigging the elections millions of Zimbabweans have yet to accept that Chamisa & co. have connived with the regime by failing to implement reforms and bu conning people to participate in flawed elections. As long as millions of Zimbabweans refuse to accept the reality Chamisa & co. are liars and continue to believe the idiotic lies of opposition winning rigged elections there will be no meaningful change in Zimbabwe.

It is insane that 46 year after independence millions continue to participate in flawed processes giving Zanu PF legitimacy. Participating in the flawed CAB3 process is equally insane, it is proof of a nation that cannot think outside the box.

The main question now is Does Zanu PF care about legitimacy? Maybe, we need to start by discussing what legitimacy is and how it benefits the ordinary person.”

Over 5 millions out of estimated 7 million voters have participated in the flawed elections again and again and you are saying it is the 2 million who did not vote who have given Zanu PF legitimacy? How did you work that one out? And you still claim that you are the smart one!

“Most people are quite aware that the government (aka Zanu PF) is the major problem in Zimbabwe. They have an endless list of complaints against this dysfunctional government. However, we all seem to fail on what matters most. How do we change the current situation? Some of us ran away to foreign countries and we are busy talking down those we left behind who are trying and failing. If we have the best minds, this is the right time to take leadership of the opposition and push for change. Anger, name-calling etc from our Diaspora comfort zones will not change anything.”

Here we go. The irrationality is nauseating.

So you do accept that we do indeed have a dysfunctional government in Zimbabwe. Well, let us start there. Have you ever asked yourself why we still have a dysfunctional government 26 years after the nation had risked all to elect MDC/CCC leaders whose number one purpose was to implement the democratic changes necessary to dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship?

If you had asked yourself that question then the answer is obvious;MDC/CCC leaders have let the nation down. Of course, they have let the nation down because they have failed to implement even one reform in 26 years including the 5 GNU years when they had the best chance to do so.

If you agree that MDC/CCC leaders have indeed sold out on reforms why is saying so “talking down those we left behind who are trying and failing.” Why are you fuming and frothing to hear the truth spoken. As for “trying” that is nonsense Mugabe bribed Tsvangirai & co. and you should not rewrite the historic facts!

After 26 years on the political stage and not even one token reform implemented the people of Zimbabwe must accept the reality that MDC/CCC leaders are corrupt, incompetent, liars and conmen - that is number one. Second, the nation must start the important business of searching for competent leaders.

The nation must ignore the nincompoops who are so dumb and stupid they consider leaders like Chamisa to be demigod who can do no wrong. Even after 26 years and nothing to show for it the nincompoops still refuse to accept Chamisa is a liar, etc. They call it “name calling”!

How anyone can still believe a mere mortal a demigod in this day and age beggars belief! No wonder we are a failed state! We agonise over accepting that Chamisa is a liar, conman, etc. regardless of the mountain of evidence to prove it!

“How do we change the current situation?” And you think you are changing it by refusing to accept that Chamisa & co. are mere mortals and that they have failed even after 26 years of MDC/CCC with nothing to show for it! What a nincompoop!

Government should not do what the individual can do for him/herself especially when the it is the regime that has failed to create the environment conducive for peace and economic prosperity. And worst of all, when everything the regime is doing is for the glory of Caesar at the expense of the good of Rome.

Of the 100 000 war veterans, many of them over 70 years old, who received Mnangagwa's bicycle bribe would have asked for a bicycle if asked. They have been forced to wait 46 years and all they ever got was a bicycle. And true enough, the millions of Zimbabweans living in abject poverty, including the bicycle recipients, could not afford to buy a bicycle in 46 years.

Zimbabwe's GDP has shrunk from US$6k per capita to US$2k in 46 years. 46 year of gross mismanagement, rampant corrupt and tyrannical oppression have taken their heavy toll! And what is more, the nightmare is not over, not whilst the regime retains its iron grip on power. What a nightmare!

Why has both Zanu PF and MDC/CCC leaders conned the nation again and again for 46 years and counting? Why?

All the explanation one can give boil down to one thing, Zimbabweans have no clue what is going on and hence easy to deceive. Zimbabweans are ignorant, naive and gullible, they have failed to grasp even the simple and obvious ideas such as what constitutes free and fair elections, and all because they have failed to exercise their mind. Failed to think.

Zimbabwe is a failed state and many people know the root cause we are a failed state is because the nation has been stuck with this corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship for 46 years and counting. Zanu PF thugs belief they have the divine right to rule the country, by virtue of conquest, and they have repeatedly denied the people their basic rights including the right to a meaningful vote and even the right to life in pursuit of power and looted wealth.

Many people have given up hope of dismantling the Zanu PF dictatorship and were hoping that the death of the generation that fought the liberation war would mark the end of the dictatorship. Chris Mutsvangwa has just announced that the party has a new generation of leader who too believe in Zanu PF's divine right to rule ready to take over

The death of the likes of Mnangagwa, Chiwenga, Mutsvangwa and other war veterans will NOT mark the end of the Zanu PF dictatorship or the failed state. Food for thought!

Your stupidity is nauseating, the personality cult mentality is so strong the brain has ossified into fat. No wonder many outsiders have given up on helping us get out of this mess, you personifies those Zimbabweans who are not yet ready for democratic change and will never be. NEVER EVER!

We should argue and agree to differ over some subjects but not over historic facts. 49% of our people are living in extreme poverty and we should be concerned. The very fact that any one should belittle the suffering of the millions living in extreme poverty is an outrage but the nincompoop crosses the double red line in trying to silence those who are rightly concerned about poverty and bad governance.

The nincompoops must be reminded who they are!

Ever since the country’s independence Zanu PF has stifled freedom of expression and free media, and stifle all meaningful debate and democratic discourse to impose the de facto one party dictatorship. And so for the last 46 years the shallow minded people have sung Zanu PF’s praises, think about “mukadzi kumba, or bonde”, and all manner of nonsense without ever being challenged. Being a nincompoop has become the norm.

Talk about anything factual or of substance, of Chamisa conning millions to participate in flawed elections, of sewage in Lake Chivero, etc. and the nincompoops become very aggressive and defensive. They want every one to talk of “mukadzi kumba, or bonde”! It is either we silence the nincompoops or they will silence us!

In Shona custom the nincompoops were silenced by using subtle language. “Endai munivhiya mbudzi!” But then the nincompoops were to so aggressive as those we have today. We have to spell it out to the nincompoops that they are talking nonsense, that there is a lot to human intellect than “mukadzi kumba, or bonde”!

Unfortunately folks will rewrite history and fail to be accountable for the issues we are witnessing today. Over the years, people rose through the ranks of MDC through stepping on others and smearing genuine cadres until the bulk of them chose to walk away and live their lives away from the toxicity of the "struggle". By the time we got to the GNU a lot of genuine cadres who had given their all were cleared.

Most of them became academics or left for the Diaspora. The gaps they left were filled by untested people - some good, some horrible. By the time we got to 2018, most of the cdes I had worked with since 2001 were on the sidelines which meant the base of MDC-18 was relatively a coalition of the old-of-2008 and the post-2013 crop with different views on how the struggle is executed.

The Khupe incident remains a very bad chapter in MDC's history. It set a very bad base for the MDC-2018. But again, it was an opportunity not only for Nelson Chamisa but for a lot of people to rise on the back of stepping on other people or outmanouvering others.

Again, when Mwonzora left (Which I still think was avoidable if egos were not the primary factor) it was an opportunity for people to rise. All this meant, the opportunities fell on untested people most of whom were mere opportunists with little commitment to the real struggle for change.

By 2022, the mantra was - The NEW! CCC was born. The pre-2018 MDC remnants existed mostly at the benevolence of Chamisa. There was a new crop. A crop that generally had no understanding of the historical non-commercial execution of the struggle. The struggle shifted from being radically ideological to purely theological. The struggle lost its bearings!

By the time Tshabangu erupted, there was really nothing to defend in CCC. There were no stockholders. CCC had sympathisers not members. Most of those who viewed themselves as stakeholders were folks born and bred in environments that believe God will intervene, all they needed to do is kneel/pamabvi/emadolweni.

The crew that were deployed in councils and parliament via berekamwana, most of them had zero history in the previous struggles that actually had a resistance factor in them. It was an opportunity for survival. They had no issue licking the side where their bread is buttered.

    So, what have we learnt?
    • History is more important than today
    • Until the stomach is challenged, the heart remains a mystery
    • There is a reason the body does not kill normal bacteria (flora) in the gut or vagina
    • Prayer must not get in the way of swords, they can co-exist but each knowing their purpose.

    Very interesting and informative.
