Professor Moyo dismiss Al Jazeera Gold Mafia as "disjointed thesis". He too must be feeling the heat Wilbert Mukori

When the story first broke that Al Jazeera was going to air a documentary of the gold smuggling and money laundering in Zimbabwe, Zanu PF regime and its apologists dismissed the whole thing s inconsequential. Christopher Mutsvangwa heralded the story as a sanctions-busting success story.

After the first part of the documentary was aired, individuals like Uebert Angel, alias Diplomatic Mafia in the documentary, was stripped of his Ambassador-at-large title and privileges. Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Information and Publicity announced there would be a criminal investigation and all those found guilty would face the full wrath of the law.

Well, there is yet another change of direction, this time coming from Professor Jonathan Moyo, a seasoned political turncoat. He is dismissing the documentary as “a disjointed and incoherent thesis”.

“Now that three of its four episodes have been – and notwithstanding the fact that the fourth episode might have bombshells in the form of controversial or shocking utterances by its main interlocutors – there is nothing that the last episode will do to save the documentary's disjointed and incoherent thesis, which would have long gone up in smoke but for the gripping and often self-incriminating verbatim claims of its greedy interlocutors,” wrote Professor Moyo in a Bulawayo24 article.

The primary purpose of the public media the world over, is to educate, inform and/or entertain the public. The Al Jazeera “Zimbabwe: Gold Mafia” documentary has certainly lived to its billing of educating and informing the world about Zimbabwe’s gold smuggling and money laundering criminal activities.

The Al Jazeera documentary gave details of the quantity of gold smuggled, 80% 0f the US$ 2 billion per year and how the country’s gold is then paid with dirty money. The proceeds of all these criminal activities are shared amongst the Zanu PF ruling elite and their appointed enablers with the Gold Mafia criminal masterminds, get the lion’s share of the loot. The gold-panners, doing the donkey work, get the small change.

The nation has “very little to show for all its gold”, as Tendai Biti readily admits in the documentary because none of the beneficiary pay cooperate or income tax the Mafiosi invest their loot in Dubai and some such safe heavens. But most worrying of all is that the looted wealth is being used to keep the corrupt and tyrannical ruling elite in power at the expense of the long-suffering ordinary people.

In the documentary, Kamlesh Pattni, alias Gold Mafia, a Kenyan gold smuggler whose activities “nearly bankrupted Kenya” during President Arap Moi’s days, has since immigrated to Zimbabwe to ply his trade. He boasted of helping many of Africa’s tyrants “survive” by using some of gold smuggling loot to buy-off the tyrants’ political opponents. Zimbabwe is awash with political intrigue and mysteries.

Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends had the golden opportunity to implement the democratic reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU, which would have ended the Zanu PF dictatorship. They failed to implement even one token reforms. And to add insult to injury, ever since the GNU debacle, MDC/CCC leaders have insisted on participating in flawed elections knowing fully well that doing so would only give Zanu PF legitimacy and thus perpetuating the dictatorship.

CCC are hell bent in participating in these 2023 elections no matter how flawed the election process got. The only rational explanation to MDC/CCC’s irrational behaviour is that the opposition has been bribed to sell out on reforms and free elections!

Of course, Al Jazeera’s “Zimbabwe: Gold Mafia” documentary has been an eye opener, the nation would never ever get this from the Zanu PF controlled public media. As a former Minister of Information and Publicity, Professor Moyo, knows only too well how The Herald, ZBC and the rest of the public media had brainwashed the Zimbabwe populous. God only knows what Al Jazeera “thesis” he was wittering about!

“It is unfortunate that there has been a concerted but ill-conceived and desperate campaign to drag @ReserveBankZim into the documentary's mud in pursuit of a hidden agenda,” continued Professor Moyo.

“Factually, and legally in terms of the Gold Trade Act, the #RBZ does not issue gold export or dealership licences, that is a responsibility of Government through Treasury. Fidelity's licence to refine and export gold was therefore issued by Government, not by #RBZ.”

It is nonsensical that US$2 billion worth in smuggled gold would leave the country and as much in dirty money would flow in and out of the country with no one at RBZ knowing. In this case two of the Bank’s senior managed were not only named but paid for their role in the gold smuggling/ money laundering activities and the Nutty Professors still wants us to believe the RBZ is squeaky clean!

The torrid of criticism of Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia documentary by Professor Jonathan Moyo is not exactly a lightning bolt out of the clear sky! Professor Jonathan Moyo has criticized his erstwhile Zanu PF colleagues for haunting him out of the country following the November 2017 military coup but has always been careful never to cross certain lines.

He has never criticized MDC’s failure to implement even one reform during the GNU, on the one hand. He became one of Chamisa’s confidants before the 2018 elections and, no doubt, would be holding a senior government position if MDC A had won that election!

On the other hand, Professor Jonathan Moyo has been careful not to blubber too much about Zanu PF corruption and tyranny. He did not want to self-incriminate but also to keep the door open for re-joining Zanu PF.

The Al Jazeera documentary has uncovered so much, he must be feeling the heart even with him hiding in his fox-hole in Kenya. Could it be that one of the individuals named in the documentary helped him smuggle gold and some such valuable; after all that is something Kamlesh Pattni, alias Brother Paul, would do every day before breakfast!

  1. "The authorities are looking into his role in trying to assist those who are laundering money. The law is very clear on this and measures will be taken," opined a senior government official.

According to S8(2) of the Money Laundering & Proceeds of Crime Act, Angel committed a crime because the Act clearly states that "Any person who conceals, or disguises the true nature, source, location, disposition, movement, or ownership of or rights with respect to property, knowing or suspecting that such property is the proceeds of crime, commits an offence."

The Act also says "Any person who acquires, uses or possesses property knowing or suspecting at the time of receipt, that such property is the proceeds of crime, commits an offence."

In S8 (4) the Act says "association with or conspiracy to commit, an attempt to commit, and aiding, abetting, facilitating and counselling the commission of money laundering is an offence."
Well, well! Ambassador-at -large was flying high a few weeks ago and now has just crash landed! This is a ruthless regime and it will not be the first time he is felt to rot, the fall-guy. There is no honour amongst crook, when the going gets tough it is every crook for himself!

  2. In a series of tweets Tuesday, the outspoken legislator argued Zimbabwean elections have often been violent, divisive and have recurrently failed to yield meaningful change to the country's socio-economic situation.

The former Zanu-PF lawmaker also blamed parliament's justice committee for failure to do due diligence on the ZEC delimitation report that has since been challenged through the courts by opposition MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora.

Mwonzora argues the delimitation report that was gazetted by the President was flawed and should be redone.

His court challenge has the effect delaying elections that are due not later than August this year, according to Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi.
He added, "People are tired of elections & they have themselves failed to bring about any substantial socio-economic change.

"Instead of acknowledging this reality there has been a lot of posturing by politicians across the board. There is always the mirage that the next election is it!"

Mliswa said the current political situation also disadvantaged the opposition, making the poll outcome a contested one should the opposition lose.
One of the primary tasks of the government of the day is to hold free, fair and credible elections at the time prescribed by the constitution. To cancel or postpone elections because those tasked to carryout this key task have failed to get things do will only reward them for not doing their work unless all the elected officials are asked to step down and interim leaders are appointed in their place!
We all know that Temba Mliswa and his colleagues would want to extend their stay in in office by hook and by crook! Yes these elections will be a farce but they must go ahead if the alternative is to allowed the incumbent leaders to stay in power.

  3. The Al Jazeera documentary has highlighted two key points:
    1) How Mnangagwa and Zanu PF are now selling off the nation’s crown jewels for a song in a desperate effort to stay in power. We have a regime that has always believe it has the divine right to rule Zimbabwe and would rather burn down the whole country and murder hundreds of thousands if need be than let anyone else rule!

    2) Mnangagwa and Zanu PF are using the looted wealth to buy the loyalty of all those, ZEC, Police, traditional leaders, war veterans, vaPositori4ED, Teachers4ED, etc., etc. And to make sure the regime gets away with yet another rigged elections, Mnangagwa is bribing the opposition to make they participating in these elections even with something as basic as a verified voters’ roll! CCC are hell bent on participating in these flawed and illegal elections.
We have allowed Zanu PF to destroy this country these last 43 years including the 1983 to 1987 Gukurahundi, the election coup of 2008, the military coup of 2017 and now this wholesale looting of the nation’s resources. We must stand up now or these thugs will completely destroy the country!

  4. ZIMBABWE's security agencies have been accused of conniving with traditional leaders to turn rural areas into ‘no-go zones' for the opposition ahead of elections expected later this year.

According to a survey by the Zimbabwe Democracy Institute (ZDI), the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and the military have allegedly made rural constituencies inaccessible to the opposition and civil society groups.

"The military sector plays a hindrance role in the accessibility of rural constituencies by the opposition, non-State media and civic society who want to conduct their election-related work. Published data supports these findings by showing that the military/security sector, working in cahoots with Zanu-PF, has been involved in intimidation and violence against the opposition in a number of rural areas," read the report.

This comes as a number of Zanu-PF heavyweights have accused a shadowy group, the Friends Association of Zimbabwe (Faz) — reportedly linked to the CIO — of heavy involvement in engineering their defeats by helping their opponents rig the party's recent primary elections.

Faz is said to be made up of former military personnel and CIO operatives.
Zanu PF is rigging the 2023 elections and the regime is clearly taking no chances. The irony is that Nelson Chamisa and company are participating in these flawed elections no matter how flawed and illegal the process get. Zanu PF bribed the MDC leaders to forget about implementing the reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU.
If there was ever a time when MDC leaders should have made their “Spartan no retreat no surrender” stand on reforms and free elections; it was during the GNU because then they had the majority in parliament, the backing of SADC leaders and, most important of all, they occupied the moral high ground following Zanu PF’s barbarism in the 2008 elections. MDC failed to implement even one token reform during the GNU, proof they were a corrupt, incompetent and politically spineless lot. It is naïve to expect these spineless CCC slugs to do anything other than participate in these elections no matter how flawed the process happens to be and give Zanu PF legitimacy.

  5. @ Noble Ngara

So Zanu PF has the right to frogmarch the rural folk to vote for the party "because Zanu PF carried them through thick and thin"? Many people have risked life and limb fighting for freedom and human dignity and after independence all we have achieved is turn povo into medieval serfs beholden to the overbearing Zanu PF thugs. We have to fight for our freedom and human dignity all over again!
