"Way forward is a 10 year GNU with no elections" -clever, punish nation to appease vote rigging ED N Garikai

I have read some foolish things in my life but what Hopewell Chinono said in his recent article takes the biscuit!
“Elections have done completely nothing democratic for Zimbabwe, except removing the national cohesion and destroying the country both economically and morally through toxic politics,” he stated.
“These elections have cost the country close to a billion American dollars in the past 20 years, and yet they have not brought any peace or development to Zimbabwe.
“This country is now in a perpetual election mode and nothing meaningful gets done as all the major parties immediately switch to election language the day after the Presidential inauguration.”
After the usual rumbling on and on about nothing of note Chinono finally addressed the meat of the problem. “The central question to the Zimbabwean crisis is, why are politicians not willing to move and reform the political framework, something that President Emmerson Mnangagwa used as his clarion call during the election campaign season?
“I have spoken to many senior ZANUPF leaders both in government and at their party headquarters, and the common thread is that they are afraid that political reforms will expose them to an election defeat.”
In his own confused way Chinono has admitted that Zimbabwe is stuck in perpetual election mode because national elections are rigged. Zanu PF would not contemplate losing power and hence the reason the party has stubbornly refused to implement the democratic reforms and give up its carte blanche dictatorial powers.
So to go back to Chinono’s opening remark, “Elections have done completely nothing democratic for Zimbabwe”; it is Zanu PF leaders who have deliberately undermined the little democratic values contained in the Lancaster House Constitution to impose this de facto one-party dictatorship.
“After the removal of Robert Mugabe, we thought that we would be standing on a positive political cusp, but we have regressed back into deeper toxic politics that has done nothing except breed corruption, incompetence and nepotism within the state and beyond,” acknowledged Chinono.
“President John Kufor asked me rhetorically in 2008, “…why are your leaders not empathetic to their people’s suffering?”
“It is a question that our political elites on both sides of the political aisle should start asking themselves too.”
Chinono did not have the wit to answer the question and so passed the responsibility to the politicians. He is constantly hobnobbing with the political elite and yet, a decade on, is yet to ask even one politician this rhetorical but pertinent question.
The reason why Zimbabwe’s politicians are indifferent to the suffering and even deaths of the ordinary people is obvious; the leaders are not democratically accountable to the people. In a healthy and functional democracy those in public office service the public, the people. The politicians serve the people and are accountable to the people. If the people are not pleased with their politicians they are free to remove from office.
This is not the case in one-party dictatorship like Zimbabwe where the politicians have eroded the people’s freedoms and rights including the right to a meaningful vote and even the right to life itself. In Zimbabwe the politicians are not the servants of the people but are the usurper holding the nation hostage, the blood sucking ticks the dog cannot get rid of.
Since when has a tick ever shown any empathy for dog? The tick is concerned with the inconvenience of poor meal or worse still of having to find another host show the dog die! Zimbabwe’s politicians are concerned about the worsening economic meltdown but only because they are being forced to scaled down on the number of palatial mansions, posh cars, trips in hired luxury jets, etc.
Of course, it is the incompetence, corruption and insatiable greed of our politicians that is the root cause of the country’s economic meltdown. And it is povo who have paid dearly for the misrule through loss of income, economic hardships and now with their very lives. To the filthy rich ruling elite, the country’s growing army of desperately poor people is an inconvenience. Indeed, the ruling elite deeply resent that the poor have not dug themselves a hole where they can suffer and die out of sight!
“If President Mnangagwa had implemented these political reforms last year, he would have seen a positive response from the international community that he is yearning to court, but now that he didn’t implement the reforms, we have to work with what is before us,” argued Chinono.
“We have to work with what is before us!” The system is not working, for Pete sake! How can we continue to work with the system that has completely destroyed the nation’s economy forcing ¾ of our people to live in abject poverty!
“This article is my proposal for the way forward because both ZANUPF and the MDC have failed to govern this country, ZANUPF is in power but it undoubtedly lacks political legitimacy across the world,” continued Chinono.
“President Emmerson Mnangagwa must realize that his current dialogue with the 18 losing Presidential candidates is seen as a comical act that will hold NO political currency at all both home and abroad.
“The real discussion with the MDCA should give birth to an agreement that will do away with elections for ten years and form a United Government of Zimbabwe.”
“This will allow for the required and pertinent reforms to take place because ZANUPF will not worry about losing elections and the MDCA will be on the table governing together with ZANUPF and implementing these reforms.”
This is no solution at all! Ordinary Zimbabweans may be bullied into accepting another Zanu PF/MDC GNU the international community will never accept it. It will be nothing but a rerun of the 2008 GNU that failed to implement even one meaningful reform in five years. Of course, no meaningful reforms will ever be implemented even after the new ten-year GNU because Zanu PF will still want to rule at the end of.
Another ten years of this corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship sends a shiver down my spine!
Chinono has been forced to admit some home truths he and many other Zanu PF apologists and hardliners have stubbornly refused to swallow until now. And still he could not help but propose a solution designed to appease Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF junta. He only admitted to Zanu PF rigging last year’s elections and thus being illegitimate after agonising over the issue. He did not have the guts to demand that Zanu PF must step down and is offering instead another GNU, just to keep the regime in power.
The solution to Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis is for the country to dismantle the discredited Zanu PF dictatorship and replace it with a democratic system of government. The nation must appoint an interim administration tasked to implement the democratic reforms culminating in the holding of the nation’s first free, fair and credible elections.

  1. So you agree that Zanu PF rigged last year's election and hence are illegitimate. The proposed 10 year GNU led by Zanu PF and MDC will accomplish nothing, they failed to implement even one reform last time. This is clearly meant to appease Zanu PF by keeping them in power under the pretext of a GNU and punish the innocent who have suffered all these years under the corrupt and vote rigging regime!

No Zanu PF rigged last year's elections, the regime has no mandate to govern and must step down. The country must then appoint an interim administration that will implement the democratic reforms leading to the holding of free, fair and credible elections. Enough is enough!

  2. Chinono is admitting that Zanu PF is illegitimate well, well! But like the clever Alec he is he admits it in one breath and in the next he is fighting for Zanu PF. He blames the disputed elections not on Zanu PF rigging but on the election themselves for not being democratic!

So after blatantly rigging the elections Zanu PF is to be rewarded with not just the usual five-year term in office, Chinono wants the term doubled. 10 years without having to bother with holding elections! Why he is bothering to suggest there will be a referendum to approve the proposed solution is laughable - Zanu PF has just rigged the elections does he really believe they would not rig the referendum too particularly since this would be what the MDC leaders want too!

I agree that the international community will not be easily fooled.

The only logical way out of this mess is for Zanu PF to step down. After 38 years of corrupt and tyrannical rule; there is nothing for it, Zanu PF must go! My greatest wish is that Zanu PF goes peacefully but with each day the regime remains in office the greater the chance the regime will be booted out of office. Idiots like Chinono are not doing the nation any favours by encouraging the Zanu PF thugs to hang on to power with all these appeasement packages!

  3. Amnesty International on Thursday called a police raid on the newsroom of a Zimbabwe online news site, 263 Chat, in the capital city a blatant assault on the right to freedom of expression and media freedom.

The police chased reporter Lovejoy Mtongwiza to the website’s offices after he was seen filming them removing vendors from the streets in Harare, Amnesty said in a statement. It said the reporter ran into the offices and that the police, who had followed him, fired teargas into the newsroom.

Zanu PF is a party of thugs and all those who thought the party had changed with the removal of Mugabe now know that nothing changed. Nothing!

  4. “The distribution of Cyclone Idai donations must be left to NGO’s on the ground and not politicians. The heartless and corrupt Zanu-PF politicians seeking to profit from this crisis must be brought to book,” Trevor Ncube wrote on his Twitter account Tuesday night.

We all know that the Zanu PF politicians will never be brought to book. Indeed this is standard Zanu PF modus operandi and Trevor knows it. When he agreed to be a member of the President Advisory Council, he knew that Zanu PF blatantly rigged the elections and using state or donor aid for political gain is one of the many Zanu PF dirty tricks. Mr Ncube is just grant standing for selfish reasons! He craves publicity!

  5. "In several of the discussions, the events of last August and last January, as well as the recommendations contained in the Motlanthe commission of inquiry, were touched upon," Olkkonen said.

"It is clear that measures need to be taken in order to avoid a repetition of past tragic events."

Zimbabwe is in this tragic economic and political mess because of the 38 years of corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF rule. Last July the party blatantly rigged the elections the EU Election Observers documented the rigging and condemned the elections is no uncertain terms and the EU parliament recommended that tough sanctions should be imposed on the regime. But the powers that be in the EU decided for selfish economic gain to do nothing.

What the EU is taking about here is threatening to slip the regime's wrist, a token, so it can be seen as putting pressure on Zanu PF to change.

The only pressure that is required here is to get Zanu PF to step down because we all know that the regime will never ever implement the democratic reforms to ensure free, fair and credible elections. If Zanu PF is allowed to remain in office until 2023, which is clearly what the EU is doing here, then the regime will rig that year's elections too! That is something the people of Zimbabwe cannot afford or tolerate!

We want free, fair and credible elections and for that we must get Zanu PF to step down - that is not negotiable!

  6. China is reportedly planning to station an elite special force from it’s red army in Zimbabwe, as Beijing moves to crystalize military cooperation with Harare, amid growing fears that the Asian powerhouse has formally approved plans to commence construction of an underground military base in the country, Spotlight Zimbabwe, can exclusively reveal

There is no doubt that China has played a major role in prop up Zanu PF and helping the regime rig elections for the last 38 years. Getting the regime to step down following last year's rigged elections is not going to be easy but the longer the regime is allowed to stay in power the harder it is going to be.

There is no doubt that China has reaped great economic rewards from its 38 years close relationship with Zanu PF and the Asian nation would want to retain its influence on Zimbabwe. And with each Chinese soldier or military equipment they bring into the country they will be that much more certain of consolidating their hold on Zimbabwe.

We, the people of Zimbabwe, must redouble our efforts to get Zanu PF to step down NOW so we can implement the reforms and put the nation back on the democratic track or we are doomed!

  7. In early March, ZPP recorded violent clashes between youths affiliated to the MDC Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora and those affiliated to the party president Advocate Nelson Chamisa during ward elections in Chitungwiza. As a result of these clashes, some ward and district elections were postponed.

This violent behaviour is not new as the party has experienced episodes of violence during its primary elections in the run up to the 2018 harmonised elections. At the funeral of the late MDC-T president, Morgan Richard Tsvangirai, the then vice president Thokozani Khupe and Secretary General were attacked by party youths and had to seek refuge in a hut; which the youths threatened to torch.

The only thing democratic about MDC leaders and members is the name of the party otherwise the party members are about as democratic as the North Korean leaders are democrats regardless of the country being called Democratic Republic of North Korea!

The tragedy is that the MDC should continues to command some following regardless of the party's failed to not only up hold democratic values but worse still to deliver even one democratic change in all its nearly 20 years on the political stage. The large following only goes to show the electorate themselves have risked life and limb for democratic change and yet they have no clue what these changes are.

  8. The European Union has encouraged Zimbabwe to continue reform and engagement in order to enhance relations with the bloc and promote the well-being of Zimbabweans.

There are some things in this life one can say with certainty; age and death will come to all mortals because no mortal being has ever escaped ageing and death. I venture to say that Zanu PF will never ever implement any meaningful democratic reforms because the regime has had countless opportunities in the past to do so but never did.

Indeed, we would not be calling for reforms if Zanu PF had not deliberately corrupted the country’s political system to create the de facto one-party dictatorship complete with all the carte blanche powers to rig elections.

If Zanu PF is allowed to remain in office till the 2023 elections; we can be 100% certain the regime will rig that year’s elections too!

The EU know Zanu PF blatantly rigged last year’s elections and, to rub chilli into the wound, maintains the elections were free, fair and credible. The EU leaders the only way Zimbabwe will ever have free and fair elections is by forcing Zanu PF to step down and allow a new administration to implement the reforms.

The EU are not going to force Zanu PF to step down, letting the regime off the hook, for selfish economic reason. Some EU countries like Belgium are keen to join other nations like China, Russia, India, Israel, etc. who have turned a blind-eye to Zanu PF’s human rights violations in order to loot Zimbabwe’s resource.

  9. @ Enos Dendere

“Zimbabwe to go forward we need to adhere to our "Constitution". We need press freedom, freedom of speech, rule of law (all citizens to respect rule of law without political affiliation), transparency, and accountable leadership (where the president is accountable to Parliament). Transparency is the cornerstone in nation-building,” you said.

Could not agree with you more. Indeed, I would have gone on to add that we should not just pay lip-service “we need to adhere to our constitution!” but follow this up with concrete and decisive action. Our constitution calls for free, fair and credible elections, for example, and yet this fundamental right has been denied repeatedly. What have we done about it? Nothing!

Zimbabwe is in this economic and political mess because the nation has been stuck with the incompetent, corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF for the last 38 years and counting. The people have failed to remove the regime from office because the party rigged the elections.

Zanu PF blatantly rigged last year’s elections and the only way forward for Zimbabwe from where we are today is for the nation to stand up and demand that Zanu PF step up! Of course, it is foolish to be rewarding Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF junta with absolute power for rigging the election which is exactly what we are doing by allowing the thugs to govern when they do not have the democratic mandate to do so!

  10. A group of 7 citizens have been camped at the United States Embassy in Harare calling for the removal of the illegal sanctions the country imposed on Zimbabwe.

The members who call themselves Broad Alliance Against Sanctions has been at the embassy since Friday last week and have vowed to stay put until the sanctions are removed.

These are just individuals who have been so thoroughly brainwashed by 38 years of Zanu PF misinformation and propaganda, they are brain-dead. Reason, truth, logic, etc. have no effect on them because they will hear what is said but nothing penetrates the atrophied lump of fatty tissue between the ears.

It has been explained a thousands of times that whatever damage sanctions have caused to Zimbabwe’s economy, it is but a fraction of the damage caused by the decades of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption. The West imposed the sanctions and it is Zanu PF that is responsible for the last two. The nation has failed to remove Zanu PF from office because the party rigged the elections.

The West have explained that they will lift the sanctions if Zanu PF honoured its promise and held free and fair elections.

If these individuals were not idiots they would be demonstrating at Zanu PF HQ demanding an end to mismanagement and corrupt, demanding that Zanu PF steps down for rigging last year’s elections, etc. because the removal of Zanu PF will not only deliver economic recovery but the lifting of the sanctions too!

Itai Dzamara will go down in the nation’s history as a national hero because he spoke truth to power. He demanding that Mugabe must resign because the latter was a incompetent, corrupt and murderous tyrant. The nation will never ever remember the idiots demonstrating at the US Embassy, even if they remained there for the rest of their lives.

Until Zanu PF holds free, fair and credible elections; the sanction must and will stay!

  11. @ Marailas Mechavio

Zanu PF rigged last year's elections, the party has no democratic mandate and it has been hoping that by presenting the world with the fait accompli of the regime sworn into office everyone will resign to that political reality. The party has done this ever since it rigged the first elections in 1980 and have always got away with it. Mnangagwa et al were cocksure they would get away with it again. Not this time!

Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown is so bad the country has blundered from one economic crisis to the next. The UN is warning Zanu PF the country is sliding into the abyss.

“Government policies in Zimbabwe are worsening the country’s economic crisis, causing immense hardship to those less well-off, and crushing the human rights of those who dare complain, a group of UN experts* has warned,” reported The Zimbabwean.

Each economic crisis goes back to the rigged elections as the root cause and thus making it impossible for anyone with half a brain to believe Zanu PF will ever get away with the rigged elections.

Zanu PF will be forced to step down before 2023! Of that I am certain.

  12. Mnangagwa celebrate receive US$2.5 calling it real money and not RTGS$!

Poor Mnangagwa, he was so thrilled to get the aid he is now reading too much into it. He thinks the Americans will lift the sanctions next!

  13. The 2% tax is hurting the poorest of the poor with no hope of any meaningful economic recovery as long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state ruled by corrupt and vote rigging thugs. Zimbabwe is a pariah state.

Einstein was right, "right is not always popular" but to apply this to these voodoo Zanu PF policies is nonsensical because we already know that the policies are not just wrong, they are down right foolish and impose on the nation by a tyrannical regime!
