"One thing I like about Zanu PF, gold Mafia is punishing those who voted for it too" sniggered some. W Mukori

The Al Jazeera “Gold Mafia: Laundry Service” of the looting of Zimbabwe’s gold has forced many Zimbabweans to sit up and pay attention. In my WhatsApp group there is a photo of a couple sniggering with the caption “One thing I like about Zanu PF anorwadzisa neakaivhotera!” (Zanu PF is punishing even those who voted for them!)

Zimbabweans have a sense of humour but in this case the joke is on us. We think we are holding the thick end of the whip when, in reality, we are at the business end!

The art of rigging the elections is to do it in such way the electorate always, always, believe their vote counts regardless how flawed and illegal the process gets. But it helps if the said electorate are so naïve and gullible they believe anything the regime says even when their own eyes tell them otherwise! And Zimbabweans must be some of the most naïve and gullible people on earth!

The 2008 Zimbabwe elections were a watershed election in that the whole world learnt the full extend of Zanu PF’s vote rigging powers. “Kuzvionera pamhiro sefodya!” as one would say in Shona. MDC won 73% of the vote in the March 2008 vote, according to the late Robert Mugabe’s Freudian slip.

SADC, the regional body, refused to recognise Zanu PF as the legitimate winner and wanted the country to implement democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. It was SADC that proposed the 2008 to 2013 GNU and gave it the principal task to implement the democratic reforms. And when SADC realised that no meaningful reforms had been implemented, they wanted the 2013 elections postponed until reforms were implemented.

It is disappointing that the majority of Zimbabweans have remain ignorant of the primary purpose of the GNU was to implement reforms and stop Zanu PF rigging elections. They continue to pretend elections are free, fair and credible and Zanu pF has the democratic mandate of the majority. They are sniggering at the majority who are keeping Zanu PF in power. In the March 2008 vote it was MDC who garnered 73% of the votes and yet Zanu PF claimed victory. Since when has 27% trumped 73%?

The sniggering Zimbabweans should have realised that it was MDC leaders’ responsibility to implement the democratic reforms. And if they were paying attention to the Al Jazeera documentary they would have learned why MDC leaders not only sold out by failing to implement reforms but, worst of all, continue to sell out to this day by participating in these flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy.

In the Al Jazeera documentary “Gold Mafia: laundry service”, Kamlesh Pattni, alias Brother/Pastor Paul, a Kenyan of Indian descend boasts of how he help President Arap Moi of Kenya, a notorious dictator, survive by buying off his political opponents and critics using the loot from his gold laundering activities. Pattni left Kenya and has been plying his gold looting skills in Zimbabwe on behalf of Mugabe and then Mnangagwa.

Of course, Brother Paul has helped Mugabe and now Mnangagwa survive by buying off Zanu PF’s opponents and critics. MDC/CCC leaders’ failure to implement even one token reform during the GNU and their stubborn insistence in participating in flawed elections is not only because they are breathtakingly incompetent. They are not whom we think they are! We think they are opposition when they are Zanu PF in all but name!

In the 2018 Zimbabwe elections the EU deployed a 245 strong Election Observer Team, the biggest such team. “Notably, major shortcomings in the pre-election environment impacted on the free expression of the will of electors, state resources were misused in favour of the incumbent and coverage by state media was heavily biased in favour of the ruling party. Further, the electoral commission lacked full independence and appeared to not always act in an impartial manner. The final results as announced by the Electoral Commission contained numerous errors and lacked adequate traceability, transparency and verifiability,” stated the EU Observer Mission final report.

“As such, many aspects of the 2018 elections in Zimbabwe failed to meet international standards.”

The EU Observer Mission made 23 recommendations to ensure future elections were free, fair and credible. Not even one of these recommendations have seen the light of day. Not one!

Both Zanu PF and MDC/CCC have completely ignored all efforts to get the recommendations implemented before the 2023 elections. Indeed, Zanu PF’s dismissive arrogancy to born out of the knowledge that Zimbabwe’s opposition would never take a decisive position on the matter – the same dismissive arrogance Zanu PF showed throughout the 2008 to 2013 GNU. Proof that Kamlesh and his fellow gold Mafia, diamond Mafia are the ones helping Zanu PF “survive”.

Zanu PF is rigging the 2023 elections. CCC are participating for the sake of the few gravy train seats on offer as bait. And the many ordinary Zimbabweans are participating because they are naïve and gullible enough to believe Zanu PF’s claim elections are free and or believe CCC’s oxymoronic nonsense the party can win rigged elections. Frankly, it is pointless for EU or any other observers to attend the elections because nothing much will change from 2018 elections!

Like it or not MDC/CCC leaders will never ever implement the democratic reforms necessary for free, fair and credible elections. Never ever! We are well and truly stuck with this Zanu PF dictatorship and, to any thinking Zimbabwean out there, this is no laughing matter!

  1. It's dog eat dog affair in Zanu PF. Indeed blood on the floor.
Chiwenga faction has won against Mnangangwa faction during hotly contested Zanu PF primary elections.
As More than 30 sitting mps and ministers belonging to Mnangangwa faction lost primary elections.
Some of the big names belonging to Mnangangwa faction that lost elections are:
John Mangwiro, Dexter Nduna, Mary Mliswa, Phillip Chiyangwa and Joseph Chinotimba, David Musabayana, Sekai Nzenza, Girovah Dzapasi, Patrick Dutiro, Simbaneuta Mudarikwa, Jenfan Muswere, Matsikenyere, Kindness Paradza, Abednicho Ncube.
The abovementioned ministers and members of parliament blame "massive rigging" as cause of their defeat.
Interestingly, also former ZEC member Dr. Moyo Qhubani said, "l have lost this primary election because of massive rigging."
In 2018 harmonized elections, Dr. Qhubani said, Zanu PF won Presidential, members of parliament and council elections free and fair.
Today, Dr. Qhubani experienced the brutality of Zanu PF and he is now crying foul.
There is rigging and if Zanu PF are rigging in house one can be certain that worse will follow in the national elections. The tragedy is the opposition will participate no matter how flawed the process get, especially at national level, where the rigging means we are stuck with the Zanu PF dictatorship.
When MDC leaders failed to get even one meaningful reform implemented during the GNU, we should have realised there and then MDC/CCC has given up on reforms and free and fair elections. Participating in these flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy in insane and this must be stopped here and now. We must denounce these flawed elections and the opposition’s lack of political credibility now and not wait until the morning after the voting when the damage is done. Zanu PF must not get political legitimacy from a flawed process in which a discredited opposition participated!

  2. Zanu PF primary elections have been a dog-eat dog affair and 30 ED MPs/Ministers royalists had lost to Chiwenga faction. ED cannot afford to lose any more seats and so the dog-eat-dog in national elections will go into over drive! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPONXEaoU44

“The whole gold hullabaloo about illicit gold is plain codswallop and balderdash. The country‘s detractors coalesced around George Soros and his Open Society Institute of Southern Africa are clearly miffed and terribly disappointed that Zimbabwe has reverted to and resurrected gold as the reference anchor of the United States Dollar.

For years, hyperinflation has been the bane and bugbear of the besieged Zimbabwe economy. The Ango-Saxon world and its European kith and kin launched a concerted economic attack. The goal being to force Zimbabwe to its heel so it could cry ‘Uncle‘. The fiat US dollar as the infant global currency of new baby America was deployed to mercilessly decimate the Zimdollar fiat money inherited from colonial Rhodesia. The desperate currency scenario called for creative innovation.

The advent of President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa and his Second Republic brought about new and fresh thinking. The magic wand of effective riposte was exhumed from our eight centuries-old Great Civilization. The uniquely outstanding Great Civilization of sub-Saharan Africa had its enduring economy anchored in gold, the venerable global currency that has defied the passage of time while appealing to universal humanity regardless of the geographical location of humanity.
Finally, there is the dimwit financial illiteracy of dimwit Tendai Biti. They can huff and puff in the cacophony of fellow detractors. One thing is sure. Gold is now the anchor stone of our national currency to the delight of the rescued citizenry.

The fulminations in the Al Jazeera documentary won't change an iota of that virtuous national currency scenario. Zimbabwe is back to the future of gold. The national currency ingenuity is well ahead of the ongoing hiatus of Saudi Arabia-threatened United States Petro-dollar, the fledgling Chinese Petro-yuan and the prospect of the Indian Petro-rupee.

The Munhumutapas and Changamire royal ancestors can only be smiling at this new ingenuity by their posterity offspring."

You know you are blubbering nonsense. Stop bubbling nonsense!

The looting of the nation’s resources by a few to help keep Zanu PF in power did not start after the advent of Mnangagwa. Kamlesh Pattni, alias Brother Paul, the seasoned gold mafia left Kenya in a huffy, after decades of helping the dictator Arap Moi “survive”, to ply his gold laundering expertise in Zimbabwe during Mugabe’s days. He is now working for a different dictator.

The modus operandi of granting a select few what is tantamount to looting licences so that they earn fortunes at the expense of the public good started with the diamond mining in Marange and Chiadzwa during Mugabe’s days. It has been extended into many other areas as the looting of the nation’s resources has now gone into overdrive.

With US$2 billion per year gold trade, Zimbabwe should be doing very well but it is not because 80% of the gold is smuggled and only a few benefit from it! You can pretend Zimbabwe is thriving the truth is we have all these diamonds, gold, lithium, etc and yet very little to show for it.

Indeed, these rich natural resources are now a curse and not a blessing because the gold mafia, diamond mafia, etc. are not only bankrolling Zanu PF’s stay in power but are using the looted wealth to corrupt the oppositions rendering it utterly useless.

The problem of Zimbabwe now taking up the role of washing the world’s dirty money is not going to be tolerated and rightly so too! If Zimbabwe cannot be trusted to stop money laundering then it will not be welcomed in those countries who play by the rules!

My prediction is that soon after the elections, most of the Korokoza gold panners will be forced to pay protection money, and they will be the lucky one; the rest will lose their claim. This happened with the jambanja thugs who were used in the violent invasion of white owned farms; the thugs were made to believe they could claim and live on the farms. But as soon as the whites left, the chefs moved in and booted the jambanja thugs off the farms!

    @TembaMliswa
The reason why Chamisa has remained confident about the 2023 elections is that he is working with FAZ which is run by the CIO. He doesn't need to do much as FAZ is already strategising from within Zanu PF. FAZ must be kicked out and the elections be run by JOC.

Well, well! When there are no rules anything is possible!

The only way we are ever going to have free and fair elections and good governance is by implementing the democratic reforms first to ensure free and fair elections.

This circus will go on and on. Chamisa and company are not interested in reforms and free elections. They believe they can win rigged elections!

  7. Here we go again, removing the dictator is only part of the solution, the blood-sucking ticks on the elephant in the room. Remove the dictatorship and get rid of the elephant , the tick problem and all!

It would be much more enlightening if these people spent learning about what CCC will do to stop Zanu rigging elections instead of always singing and repeating meaningless slogans!
We are in this mess because our democratic system is weak and feeble and all because the electorate is naïve and gullible when it should be informed and diligent. We need to educate our people and stop this idiotic singing and slogans designed to brainwash people into unless zombies who will follow sheepishly, no questions asked.

“It's amazing how stupid people are! Dams are being constructed, roads houses and agriculture is booming. How are these things punishment to anyone?! Because these are the things that are being done with the money from the sanctions busting smuggling! But then again I don't expect you to get it.. Too subtle...”
Zimbabwe used to be the bread basket of Southern Africa, with a robust economy and jobs for all. Today the nation has to rely on food aid every two or three years, the economy has but collapsed, the mining sector which is doing well is benefiting a few because of the wholesale looting in the sector, millions of our people are living in abject poverty. Basic services such as health care and education have all but collapsed. Even in the urban centres there is no running water and power cuts are the norm.
You can talk of the economy booming of the one new road constructed and ignore the many roads with pot-holes and broken bridges. The reality out there on the ground is telling its own story.
I have said what I have to say, you likewise. We should let the people of Zimbabwe decide for themselves who they will believe and follow in a free, fair and credible elections. This is what has been lacking in Zimbabwe these last 43 years, the opportunity for the people to have a meaningful say in the governance of the country.
Zanu PF has rigged elections and is rigging the 2023 elections. MDC/CCC sold out by failing to implement the democratic reforms and is selling out now by participating in these flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy. This time, Zanu PF must know the party will not get political legitimacy; the game is up!
