Security chiefs sweating over G40 revival - fear another coup but with a bloody end P Guramatunhu

“The country’s security chiefs are sweating over the possibility of tycoon James Makamba becoming Mashonaland Central provincial chairman for Zanu PF after he reportedly submitted his CV for the position last week, it has emerged,” reported New Zimbabwe.

“In confidential briefings to New Zimbabwe Monday, sources said the Mashonaland Central provincial joint operations command (JOC) has consistently expressed its concerns over his candidature in its meetings, especially over his previous alleged romantic affair with former first lady Grace Mugabe which led him into fleeing the country.”

Security concerns are that he is a daring man capable of doing anything after he allegedly “went after the wife of Africa’s most feared man at the time”.

“There is a strong belief among the security chiefs that he is daring, reckless and excitable. This is from a security point of view,” a security source said.

JOC chiefs “are sweating” and for good reason!

Anyone who has followed Zanu PF politics will know that JOC is the real power behind the throne. The 2014 factional war between Robert Mugabe and Mai Mujuru was mess but it was not dangerous, at least, not as dangerous as the G40 and Lacoste factional war that followed.

For those who don’t know, JOC is the Junta, composed of the top brass in the Army, Police, CIO and Prison Services plus a few select Zanu PF individuals headed by Robert Mugabe (until the fateful 15 November 2017 when he was booted out in the coup) and assisted by Emmerson Mnangagwa. JOC is the real power behind the throne in Zimbabwe.

JOC has always played a key role in the establishment and retention of the de facto one-party Zanu PF dictatorship starting with the Gukurahundi massacre that forced PF Zapu to sign the 1987 Unity Accord, laying the fountain of the one-party state. And over the years the Police and CIO have played the key role of disrupting, harassing and even killing Zanu PF’s political opponents and critics.

But, without doubt, JOC came to its own in the 2008 elections when the junta was called up to wrestle political power from Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends. It was none other than Emmerson Mnangagwa who step up and mobilised the Junta. ZEC was instructed not to declare the election result and JOC spend the next six weeks cooking up new election results.

Morgan Tsvangirai’s 73% votes, according to Mugabe’s Freudian slip, was whittled down to 47%, enough to force the runoff. During the runoff JOC conducted a military style Operation “Mavhotera ani!” (Whom did you vote for!) A rhetorical question since JOC had just spent the last six weeks cooking up the result.

Operation Mavhotera ani carried out by war veterans, Zanu PF militia with the Army, Police, CIO and Prison Services personal, under orders from JOC, carrying out the heavy-duty stuff like abducting and murders. The wanton violence was punishment for rejecting Zanu PF in the earlier vote.

“Zanu PF has declared war on the people!” complained Tsvangirai as he announced his withdrawal from the runoff.

Of course, everyone knew in executing operation Mavhotera ani JOC the Junta had crossed the Rubicon River; from hence forth the Army, the Police, CIO and the Prison Service will having keeping Zanu PF in power as its number one priority and serving the nation will come a poor second.

The 2014 factional war that resulted in Mai Mujuru and company being booted out was not a worrying moment for the Junta because neither Mai Mujuru nor anyone of her supporters commanded much support Junta support. Indeed, Mai Mujuru was blamed for Zanu PF’s electoral in the March 2008 and hence the reason she played no part in the coup that followed.

The November 2017 military coup was different in that it divided JOC itself. The Army and Prison Service supported the Lacoste faction whilst the Police and CIO supported G40 factions led by Grace Mugabe on behalf of her husband. Senior members in G40 faction, Police and CIO were either booted out of office or were haunted out of the country.

It should be stated here for the record that the 2008 to 2013 GNU offered Zimbabwe the best opportunity even to implement the democratic reforms and dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship once and once for all. The reform, fully implemented, would have severed the bonds that have turned the Army, Police, etc. into Zanu PF departments in all but name.

Sadly, Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends who were entrusted the task of implementing the reforms failed to implement even one reform. Not even one!

“3/4 of the MDC leaders are double agents owned and controlled by Zanu PF. MDC is as much a department of Zanu PF in all but name just as the Army and Police!” boasted a Zanu PF crony.

Well, that would certainly explain why not even one MDC leader had the common sense to propose even one reform in five years of the GNU. And why MDC leaders are all, to the man and woman, insisting on participating in flawed and illegal elections even when ZEC has failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters’ roll.

It is hard to believe all the MDC leaders are that stupid to believe in these Chamisa “winning in rigged elections strategies”, especially after 41 years of rigged elections. Some MDC leaders are stupid, many. As for the reminder, they must be sell-outs!

It has been four years since the November 2017 military coup and the promised economic recovery has not materialised. When Mnangagwa proclaimed “Zimbabwe is open for business!” He was cocksure this was going to open the floodgate the much-needed investment and economic recovery. Well, there been no new investment and the economic meltdown has continued.

The failure by Mnangagwa to revive the economy means there is pressure in the country for change.

G40, Police and CIO members who were side-lined following the 2017 military coup have watched the economic meltdown and rubbed their hands with glen. They were blamed for the economic meltdown before the coup and now they cannot hide their pleasure in pointing out that the real criminals were those remained after the coup.

The failure to revive the economy has opened the door for G40 revival in Zanu PF. The G40 supporters cowed down in the aftermath of the November 2017 military coup have been emboldened by the worsening economic situation and growing public unrest.

Even if JOC block James Makamba being elected chairperson of Mashonaland Central there will be more G40 leaders who will be elected into high office; the G40 faction revival is real and it is being fuelled by the economic meltdown.

JOC members know the revival of G40 is on the cards and rivalry in G40 and Lacoste will permeate into JOC. The mistrust between the two faction means JOC will have to step in once again to decide which faction prevails. The November 2017 military coup did not result in any bloodshed in the Army, Police, etc. the next coup may have a totally different outcome.

  1. PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa wants a Junior Parliament with robust debates on key issues.

Mnangagwa said he was disappointed with submissions from junior parliamentarians which he said lacked debate when he was officially opening the Junior Parliament at the State House yesterday.

"It's a pity that it's only a select few who are here. Parliament actually should have more members sitting together and quarrelling. It (Junior Parliament) did not have members of the opposition criticising it," Mnangagwa said.

"In future, I think we should include them so that you don't all speak in one
    direction."

This is has become one of the hallmarks of this Mnangagwa regime - hypoctisy! He wants a robust democratic debate in the Junior Parliament but does not want the same in the national parliament. If he was sincere then why he has denied the people their basic right to free elections and a meaningful say in the governance of the country all these last 41 years.

Zanu PF has blatantly rigged the elections since independence in 1980 and since the failed GNU the regime has been given legitimacy by MDC who have insisted in participating in flawed elections for a share of the spoils of power!

  2. POLICE yesterday dispersed dozens of elderly people from a Christmas party hosted by MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa in Highfield, Harare, and reportedly took away groceries meant for beneficiaries.

Chamisa was supposed to host an early Christmas party for the elderly and people living with disabilities before a truckload of armed police officers arrived and called off the gathering.

Senior party officials described the behaviour by the police as unfortunate and accused them of acting like Zanu-PF commissars.

MDC Alliance provincial chairperson Wellington Chikombo confirmed the incident, and condemned the behaviour of the police which he said was worrying.

"The president (Chamisa) was having a party as he always does with the elderly this time of the year, donating goodies and the police came and asked us to leave," Chikombo said in an interview.

"They chased away people, including the elderly and the disabled from the event and we are worried that our police continue to act like an extension of Zanu-PF political commissars."

Those of us old enough to have lived in the white colonial days will know the country produced enough food to feed everyone in the country with enough left over to be the breadbasket of the region. There are one or more members in every family is regular employment earning enough to supplement the family’s income to buy clothes and other basics especially at Christmas time.

Zanu PF has all but destroyed the country agricultural sector the country has gone from being the breadbasket to totally dependent on imported food aid. The national economy is in total ruins and unemployment soared to 80% plus in the period 2000 to 2008 and has never ever recovered. We are a nation of beggars!

It is ironic that Zanu PF should now be using food aid, agricultural input handout for selfish political leverage when it is the regime’s doing people are beggars. It is an outrage that the regime even has the chutzpah to stop anyone else helping the poor, the regime would rather see the people suffer than have anyone else other than Zanu PF alleviate their suffering even over something as meagre as a packet of sugar and a loaf of bread!

Zanu PF destroyed the Zimbabwe economy and turned the nation into beggars and now the party is profiting from it and fighting tooth and nail to maintain the status quo! Talk of a nightmare, this is the stuff of nightmares!

  3. Zimbabwe yesterday took delivery of a consignment of one million Sinovac Covid-19 vaccines donated by the People's Republic of China, in a show of continued excellent relations that exist between the two countries.

China's Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Guo Shaochun handed over the vaccines to Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Constantino Chiwenga at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

The latest consignment takes the donations to two million vaccines, adding significantly to the country's reserves from purchase orders mainly from China.

China has come in a strong way in supporting Zimbabwe's vaccination drive, through donations and facilitating several purchase orders.

"The donation is also cementing the excellent comprehensive strategic partnership between the two sisterly countries," said VP Chiwenga.

I will bet my bottom dollar that what China has earned from the diamond looting alone in one month will pay for the one million Sinovac vaccines. China has been active in Marange and Chiadzwa since 2006 with a brief stop when Mugabe ordered the Chinese to leave in 2017. Mugabe was himself booted out of office before the end of the year and following year the Chinese help Mnangagwa rig the 2018 elections and before the end of that year the Chinese were back in Marange and Chiadzwa.

Of course, the relationship between China and Zimbabwe is more like that between the tick and the cow. The Zanu PF ruling elite are benefiting at the expense of the ordinary Zimbabweans whose life blood the Chinese are sucking dry. As much as Zimbabweans are desperate for real political change to end the economic meltdown, China will never allow such political change to happen. Never!

MDC leaders’ stupidity of thinking they can win rigged elections is only helping Zanu PF, as the Chinese puppet, to rig elections and get away with it! MDC leaders are insisting on participating in flawed elections out of greed; they are after the few gravy train seats Zanu PF is offering as bait!

  4. According to a WB 2019 report 49% of Zimbabweans were living in abject poverty. The number has surged upward since then. Decades of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption under this Zanu PF regime has taken its toll. What is really irritating is how Zanu PF is using food and material aid to hold the poor beholden to regime for its own selfish political gain and will not permit outsiders to help.

"Seek ye first the political kingdom, and all else shall be added unto you”, Ghana's first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, entreated Africans. We in Zimbabwe have failed to secure political power when we gain our independence because we trusted our black nationalist liberation heroes and heroines will never oppress us. Mugabe and company promised us mass prosperity, "Gutsa ruzhinji!" as Mugabe never ever seem to tire of saying it in the 1980s, and we swallowed the bait, hook, line and sinker.

Mugabe denied us our basic freedoms and rights including the right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country in the very first national elections in 1980 and we have never regained our political freedoms and rights.

We had our best opportunities to reclaim our political freedoms and rights during the 2008 to 2013 GNU but sadly the opportunities were wasted. MDC leaders who were entrusted the task to implement the forms failed to implement even one token reform. Worse still MDC are the ones insisting on participating in flawed elections to give vote rigging Zanu PF legitimacy.

The tragedy is Zimbabwe is now stuck in this nonsensical and wholly untenable position of trying to win rigged elections and have good and stable government without free elections and rule of law. We are trying to reinvent the wheel and are giving a triangle a go!

  5. "When neither the mentioned senior MDC Alliance officials nor the party clarified the situation, on the back of growing messages on various social media platforms that were sharing the article coupled with direct messages that were asking for my position, I wrote to the MDC Alliance secretary-general (Charlton Hwende) on October 11, 2021, withdrawing my offer to train MDC Alliance polling agents in Tsholotsho and to train the party's 44 000 polling agents for the 2023 elections, citing the party's silence," Moyo said in an emailed response.

The MDC Alliance was found wanting in the 2023 elections after failing to field polling agents in several polling stations.

Professor Moyo's offer was not going to stop Zanu PF rigging the 2023 elections even if he had honoured it.

Yes, there were a lot of election irregularities that happened in 2018 that could have been avoided by having well trained election agents. Enough to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections? Hell, no!

It should be remembered that ZEC’s affidavit submitted to the Constitutional Court did not have all the V11 forms and there are eyewitness accounts of V11 forms being completed outside the setting of the Polling Stations. Hence the reason ZEC had three different vote tallies which it could nor reconcile. So well trained polling station agents will have made no difference since they could guard real stations and not ghost stations.

The elections went ahead without verified Polling Stations (about 10% it is impossible to say how many exactly because no one verified) just as the elections had gone ahead without a verified voters’ roll.

Besides, there are a host of other opportunities to rig the vote long before the first ballot is cast. Zanu PF has already decreed that 3 million Zimbabweans in the diaspora will be denied the vote “as long as the sanctions imposed by the West remain”, party acting National Political Commissar boasted. Just a feeble excuse, why should anyone be punished over a matter they have no control over.

The cold reality is these elections should not go ahead without first implementing the reforms to ensure free, fair and credible electoral process. The elections are only going ahead because the opposition have sold out of free elections for a share of the spoils of power and, by participating, MDC is giving Zanu PF legitimacy. A win-win for MDC and Zanu PF but at the expense of the ordinary people are stuck with the corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship!

The people cannot stop the elections going ahead what they can do is make sure the whole electoral process is seen for what it is – a mockery of democratic elections and that Zanu PF does not get the legitimacy the party solely needs! The people must not participate in the flawed process and must condemn it in advance and not wait for election day!

  6. "There were several people who were disqualified for one or two reasons, the most notable one being James Makamba who was eyeing the Mashonaland Central provincial chairmanship. So he will not be able to stand. His main problem was that he got an extremely adverse security report and there was no way he could have sailed through," the source, who attended the meeting, said.

The disqualification vindicates NewZimbabwe.com's Monday report which indicated that chances of him being given the greenlight to contest were virtually non-existent.

Mnangagwa and company’s failure to revive the economy, the number one task facing them after seizing power in the November 2017 military coup has emboldened the G40 members and the supporters to demand change. In the November 2017 coup the ordinary people were sick to their back-teeth of Robert Mugabe and they did not hesitate to come out in the thousands in support of the coup.

The shoe is now in the other foot, four years of Lacoste rule have failed to deliver any economic recovery. The public will come out in support of G40 if there was another show down! The people are growing restless for change; change is certain in the air! James Makamba has failed to regain a foothold in reclaiming Zanu PF but many other pseudo G40 members will get back into power and, once in, initiate mischief and change of guard.

  7. Hon Sikhala argued:
The ED regime’s attempt to ban us won’t work. We are the voice of the people.
We are in the hearts of the people. Whatever shenanigans won’t work.”
“With Odinga…He was telling me never to give up fighting.
He laughed when I told him that, it could have been him whom I was worried would give up.

And yet after 22 years, 5 of which in the GNU, MDC has failed to implement even one meaningful change. Not even one! Worse still, for all MDC leaders to grandstanding and posturing MDC are the ones who are now helping Zanu PF remain in power by participating in flawed and illegal elections and giving vote rigging Zanu PF legitimacy. MDC are rewarded with a few gravy train seats, their Judas Iscariot thirty pieces of silver, for selling out the people’s fight for free, fair and credible elections.

After 41 years and counting of rigged elections a growing number of Zimbabweans are waking up to the sheer futility of participating in flawed and illegal elections to give vote rigging Zanu PF legitimacy in pursuit of the idiotic notion of “winning in rigged elections strategies!” What a mouthful of scrap!
