Stupid MPs in Zimbabwe electing the President?
THE maverick Edison Zvobgo once said in Parliament: "Mr Speaker Sir, half the people in this August House are stupid."
The statement is hilarious, but the reality smacks hard if one considers what happened in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
The Speaker then did not find the statement amusing and quickly asked Zvobgo to withdraw the offensive statement.
Zvobgo being a man a man of dexterity in speaking retorted: "I stand guided, Mr Speaker, and would like to withdraw my words and rephrase. Mr Speaker, half the people in this August house are NOT stupid."
The House we are told, burst in applause.
At the turn of the century, with the advent of the opposition MDC, Vice-President Simon Muzenda told a rally somewhere in Masvingo that even if Zanu-PF nominates a baboon, the electorate will vote for it and represent them in Parliament.
These two statements are poignant.
Zanu-PF does not care about the type of leadership it places before the electorate.
They will simply be voted into power.
The party has an entitlement mentality that people who are not fit to even be cell leaders in the village find themselves in the august House.
This week, MP Blessing Makumire during the question and answer session asked the government what it was doing about demonstrations or strikes by nurses across Zimbabwe general hospitals.
Asked Makumire: "Madam Speaker, the question is, are the nurses still on strike or have they resolved the reason why they are on strike?"
A fair question. A question that spoke to what many Zimbabweans wanted to hear about health services in the country.
Before the minister could respond, a Zanu-PF proportional representation MP Nomsa Chaimvura interjected: "Hazvinei newe. (That has nothing to do with you)." The Hansard recorded.
The audacity, ignorance of Chaimvura was astounding.
Even the Deputy Speaker did not find it amusing.
She ruled: "Honourable Chaimvura, you have gone beyond bounds. Please withdraw your statement."
With her tail tucked between her legs, Chaimvura withdrew her statement.
In my more than 10 years of covering Zimbabwe's parliament, I can safely say Chaimvura is not a rare species from Zanu-PF.
A majority of the members are of that ilk.
They come to interject.
To them opposition MPs should not speak, they should not hold the Executive to account.
They are merely there to warm the green benches or seats.
Chaimvura fits squarely into the lot that Zvobgo call "stupid" and Muzenda called "baboons".
There is nothing honourable about her behaviour.
Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development minister Anxious Masuka, standing in for the Health minister Douglas Mombeshora, responded to Makumire's question, but the answer had a subtext of threatening the nurses.
"I urge that going forward, we should look at the Labour Act so that should we have grievances, we follow the grievance handling in the Labour Act," Masuka said.
"Let me reiterate that the government that is led by His Excellency, Dr ED Mnangagwa is a people's government, it is a listening government.
"Between today and tomorrow, government workers are going to have a living wage adjustment, which is adequate."
The stupidity of Chaimvura to compete for the title of being the most vocal interjector jogged my mind to the question of Constitutional Amendment No. 3: The omnibus amendment that, among other things, seeks to lengthen the presidential and parliamentary term from five to seven years, abolish direct election of the President and replace it with parliament voting for the President, abolish the Zimbabwe Gender Commission and the duty of defence forces from upholding the Constitution to acting in accordance with the constitution.
Zanu-PF is adamant that these crucial changes should be done in Parliament and no referendum should be done on the amendment.
The cherry on top is scrapping of the 2028 elections and having the Executive and Parliament as presently constituted serve until 2030.
Let us for one moment think that the "stupid" and "baboon" MPs will pass this amendment without a referendum.
It is as obvious as the sun rises from the east that the Bill will pass without amendments.
It is also sickening that the same "stupid" and "baboon" MPs will bear the heavy responsibility of voting for a President in the august House.
We are done for as a country if this omnibus amendment is passed and signed into law.
Zimbabwe's future will be in the hands of "stupid" MPs, as Zvobgo said.
Electing a President is an onerous task.
It is entrusting the country's fate into the hands of one man.
And this one man's electoral college is made up of the same stupid MPs that Zvobgo decried in Parliament.
It is clear what happens when the electorate entrusts leadership to questionable characters.
The United States after November 2024 elections is a good example.
The world economy is now in turmoil even though the war is being fought in "far away" Iran.
We know the embarrassment as a country we have collectively suffered when our leaders on international stages fail to grasp common concepts such as artificial intelligence.
It comes as no shock why Zimbabwe has been creamed off in bilateral deals.
Chaimvura represents what is bad with us as a country.
We entrust leadership to people not fit for office.
We entrust our future to "stupid" people as Zvobgo would say.
We have voted for "baboons" as Muzenda said because Zanu-PF decided so.
This episode should trigger us to think deeper about the future of our country.
The leadership we want as a country and the values we stand for.
One cannot help, but sigh: It's leadership, stupid!
I'm out!”
If the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth must be said, then it must be said Edison Zvobgo was lying when he said: "Mr Speaker Sir, half the people in this August House are stupid." What the fly on the wall would have said is “Everyone in this August House is stupid, including our Maverick hero Edison Zvobgo himself. The stupid do not self diagnose.
Edison Zvobgo was a shrewd guy, that much I would readily admit. He was smart enough to pick up on one of the ills, if not treated, would condemn Zanu PF to a party of stupid murderous thugs blundering from pillar to post. "The Mozambique syndrome," Edison call the illness.
"Whenever they lost an argument when we were in Mozambique, they would accuse you of being CIA to avoid the substantive issues," he explained.
“Today they call you an American puppet to avoid responsibility.”
The Mozambique syndrome was used to stifle meaningful debate and democratic discourse within the party and when Zanu PF formed the first black government after independence in 1980 the stifling was extended to a national level. The consequences of stifling debate and democratic discourse was to produce a party and then a nation of yes-man, of stupid idiots!
Edison Zvobgo was smart enough to see the folly of the Mozambique syndrome and by failing to do something to end it he condemned the nation to being governed by idiots.
Zvobgo himself was a victim of the Mozambique syndrome in that he was the one who presided over the creation of the executive presidency, with tyrannical powers. As soon as that was done, Mugabe sidelined Zvobgo to minister without portfolio.
Zimbabwe is a failed state, the consequence of 46 years and counting of being governed by stupid men and women! The opportunity to end the Zanu PF dictatorship has been wasted by MDC/CCC leaders after Zanu PF bribed the lot and, for their party, they too adopted the Mozambique syndrome stifling debate and democratic discourse just as Zanu PF has done.
The people’s failure to see how MDC/CCC leaders have been running with the povo hare and hunting with the Zanu PF hounds has not helped in the fight to cure ourselves of curse of the Mozambique syndrome. An ignorant, naive and gullible electorate has been easily conned by both Zanu PF and opposition leaders to do stupid things time and time again.

ReplyDelete25 Aug 18 X post alleging "Chamisa is being given an offer he cannot refuse!
Nelson Chamisa, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube and many other opposition leaders have failed to implement even one token democratic reform even when they had the golden opportunity to do so during the GNU. They have failed to give any explanation why they failed. Rumours that they were bribed by Zanu PF to sell out on the reforms have circulated and these leaders must come out and clear the air!
If they think they can continue to avoid the questions relating to their past performance - they are wrong! The demand for an explanation is growing and not dying down.

ReplyDeleteAmendment Bill No. 3 is "unstoppable", says Chalton Hwende CCC MP. If the truth, the whole truth nothing but the truth, is to be said then this bill could have been stopped if only the nation had visionary leaders. If MDC leaders had not sold out during the GNU, Zanu PF dictatorship would have been dismantled then.
The people themselves should have refused to participate in a flawed process. There was never any doubt that the amendment process was not going to be free, fair and credible. How many times have the people been warned of the folly of participating in flawed processes only to give the result legitimacy!
"Kurumwa nechokuchera!" We are our own worst enemy!

ReplyDelete"Va Mukori, Dr. Edson Zvobgo, was the only Zanu PF member who genuinely apologized for Gukurahundi atrocities in Matabeleland. Credit must be given o where it is due!
I am not surprised that Zvobgo apologised for Gukurahundi, not surprised that he readily acknowledged that parliament was full of stupid people and that he noticed a hell lot of many other foolish things happening in Zimbabwe. I believe Zimbabwe would be a better nation today if our political system had allowed people like Zvobgo to lead instead of the buffoons and psychopaths who did and are in power to this day!
If Dr Zvobgo was alive today, I am sure that he would regret that the Mozambique syndrome was ever allowed to spread and dominate our political interaction. I am also sure he will regret, if he did not do so already, helping to create the executive presidency without sufficient checks and balances especially given the megalomania Mugabe and the power hungry poofs in Zanu PF.

ReplyDelete“Journalist and political analyst Rutendo Matinyarare says President Emmerson Mnangagwa could have earned greater public support had he channelled resources towards development instead of campaigning for Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3, which seeks to extend his term of office.
Matinyarare made the remarks on X, arguing that the money being spent on the Bill’s mobilisation could have transformed key sectors.”
The penny has finally dropped! All along Rutendo blame sanctions for Zimbabwe3’s economic meltdown and refused to see the real root causes - gross mismanagement and rampant corruption!
I am yet to be convince that Matinyarare has had his Saul on the road to Damascus moment! Zimbabwe is notorious for being a land of sell outs; would sell their own mothers for a ministerial post, a twin-cab truck, even a piece of Sapatina Sapatina chicken and be proud they had a mother to sell. They are equally notorious for flip-flopping and many have mistaken this for transformative moments! Big mistake!

ReplyDelete"ZANU PF thugs wanted harass the brave woman who strongly spoke against 2030 and took her top to display the NO TO 2030 Agenda regalia. These ZANU PF goons showed serious desperation signs."
Who did not know that Zanu would blatantly rig the amendment process to get what it wants? People were conned to participate knowing fully well that participating would give Zanu PF legitimacy! Why are we so stupid that we keep repeating the same foolishness time and time again?
Any body with half a brain KNEW this would happen the really big question is why are some people so naive and gullible they still believe the idiotic lies and participate in these flawed processes? How many times have Zimbabweans been warned of the sheer folly of participating in flawed processes to give Zanu PF legitimacy, perpetuate their own suffering and all for MDC/CCC leaders can share the spoils of power!

ReplyDeleteWe have to put an end to this madness of participating in political processes we know are flawed; "so flawed, so illegal, the only logical step is to withdraw". Knowing fully well that participating will give Zanu PF legitimacy and perpetuate the nation's suffering. Still we participate because we are conned by MDC/CCC sell outs who get a share of the spoils of power from Zanu PF.
Every body knew Zanu PF was going to rig the amendment process taking place. It is shocking that leaders like David Coltart should pretend, that they did not know and shed buckets of crocodile tears that Zanu PF is rigging!
"We can do much better as a nation!" said the hypocrite!
@ Earthmanzhou
ReplyDeleteAre you surprised that Zanu PF is rigging the amendment process? You should not be surprised because Zanu PF have been rigging these processes all along. The million dollar question is why are you participating especially when you have been warned that doing so will give the regime legitimacy and perpetuate the nation’s suffering?

ReplyDeleteOpposition leaders like Professor Madhuku, Tendai Biti, Nelson Chamisa, etc. have all continued to participate in Zimbabwe's flawed elections; "so flawed, so illegal, THE ONLY LOGICAL STEP IS TO WITHDRAW"! out of greed. They know that Zanu PF offers a few gravy train seats to entice the opposition to participate no matter how flawed and illegal the process get. An offer they have found irresistible!
Millions of ordinary Zimbabweans have been conned by the opposition leaders to participate in these flawed elections because they are foolish enough to believe the opposition will win the rigged elections even after 46 years and counting of participating only to give Zamu PF legitimacy and perpetuating their own suffering. The masses have failed to make the intellectual quantum leap for one to comprehend the importance of rule of law and hence the need for free and fair elections. Opposition leaders like Chamisa have conned them to believe the idiotic lie the opposition can win rigged elections no matter how flawed and illegal!
Zimbabwe's worst curse is that millions of voters are so naive and gullible they believe idiotic lies and are conned to participate in elections "so flawed, so illegal the only logical step is to withdraw" for 46 years and counting!.

ReplyDelete“CHAPTER FOUR
The Payday Machine
The Payday Machine: Why the Opposition Fights for Elections, Not Democracy
The opposition does not fight for democracy. It fights for the election cycle. Those are not the same thing. Democracy is what elections are supposed to produce. The election cycle is the machine that produces money, vehicles, salaries, NGO grants, diaspora remittances, printing contracts, t-shirts, fuel coupons, and the entire ecosystem of patronage that keeps the opposition leadership alive between polls.
Remove the election cycle and the opposition starves. Not the people — the people are already starving. The leadership starves. The Mercedes stops. The allowances stop. The international conference invitations stop. The donor meetings in Geneva stop. ”
Too true!
When the opposition failed to implement the democratic reforms during the GNU, when they had the best chance ever to do so, they settled for the few gravy train seats Zanu PF gave away to entice the opposition to participate. Zanu PF needed the opposition to win a few seats to maintain the facade Zimbabwe was a multi-party democracy.
The masses participated in the flawed elections because they believed the opposition leaders’ idiotic lies that they plugged the Zanu PF vote rigging loop holes. Why the people were so easily conned for 46 years and counting, speaks volumes of their IQ!
@ SFB
ReplyDelete"Your disrespect for the people you claim democracy depends on, causes you to be rejected by many.
You don't improve people's understanding by telling them they have low iq's. If you are not able to convince them, it is not their fault! It is yours! Accept your responsibility and stop blaming others for your failures!"
There are people with a low IQ in this world, that is a fact. If some one keeps repeating the same foolish thing expecting a different result such as participating in flawed elections for 46 years; they have the IQ of a garden slug. Period! I am here to speak the truth and not to massage some misplaced ego!

ReplyDeleteTendai Biti assured the nation that constitutional amendment bill No. 3 would never pass. NEVER! The constitution is such a legal mine field some one would have to be "drunk" to try it. With that assurance, many Zimbabweans have participated in the process to stop the amendment.
Now it is clear Zanu PF it pushing through the amendment with ease, there will be no referendum and even the public consultation are being rigged! The only thing the people have done by participating was to give the process legitimacy.
How many times have this nation been warned of the sheer folly of participating in these flawed processes only to give Zanu PF legitimacy and perpetuate the nation's suffering? Biti conned them to participate! Yeap! You have just been conned yet again and will pay dearly for it!!!
